I see why you're so critical about the game, but yes, a strong community, that is able to push their game to an official tournament indicates, that there actually are people playing the game.

Never played it, but followed quite a bit since some interesting pros were doing it (strenx, rapha, cypher, winz, others), and apparently the gae wasn't even pleasant to play, which should be at least the only thing required for something to have some activity.

The issue isnt that id isnt doing anything, the issue is that the community is sitting on their asses doing absolutely nothing (outside of a very small group of people).

If you want to see quake get more events then start doing something or atleast start supporting the people who are.

Quake community currently is just sitting around waiting for handouts and its fucking disgusting imho.

What I'm talking about is meaningful financial backing and belief in their game, like Shootmania was given in the past (yes Ubisoft and Nadeo also had to attempt to cover their investments)

When IEM and ESL dropped Quake Live from their tournaments in 2011 id software did nothing to support it (as far as I'm aware).
Just look at the sponsors and money that's wasted on that main stage at Quakecon every single year! - couldn't some of that cash have been more meaninfully spent?

It was only fans and community that kept it at Dreamhack so long - it's only fan's and community keeping 125FPS running ( all hail Alexy A.) and it's community and pro-players running streams on twitch.

Listening to numerous players and people in the know over the years - it was always stated that id Software 'would not listen' - 2GD tried to get involved around the same time as his Bloodline (BLC)* project - and he said the same thing - that he could get nowhere with them.
They had people like Slasher who did his best to support and promote the game - and they basically chased him away.

As far as myself - I've been playing online since the early days of Quake III - I don't play any other games and over the years I've spent a great deal of my time helping others - and I've put my hand in my pocket plenty of times - so don't bother me with you're sweeping generalisations.

Would I like to see more community support? Yes! of course.
Would I like to see some sort of centralised support and pulling together? - Yes!

and with this new update and the switch-over totally to Steam that's probably what we need - but reading through these posts on ESR no-one would ever agree on anything - so likely it won't happen.

Considering the pretty much non-existent access to the game, this community did an insane job in delivering improvements, tournaments and content, most of which got utterly ignored by the lardy duo the same way as all the Q3 features and mods.

The "community" has produced some good content with zlive,faceit etc but that is centralized on a specific group of people who have all worked with eachother over the years.

The issue is that we had everything served on a silver platter from the get go with quakelive with iem,dreamhack,quakecon,gamegune etc. the majority which had/have corporate sponsorships and a dedicated crew to running said events.

All of those organizers/events have dissapeared and now everyone is sitting on their ass complaining about how "quake is dead".

I have seen close to no effort being put into actually organizing an event, hell i see hardly any effort into promoting quakelive content.
The pure fact that i a virtual unknown to most people get more views on my ql videos then say zlive should honestly be proof enough of that.

The difference being with something like zlive or something like myself is that i actively try and promote content on different venus while zlive is content in letting the already established but miniscule viewerbase do their thing.

All of these events were 'streamed' via gtv.

Additionally, the community ran a very healthy number of public servers and supported their beloved game with mods, features and maps, for free.
Considering that the last time id touched Q3 was in 2002, one can safely assume it was this community and their 'entitled attitude' that reanimated quake and sent its walking corpse back to sunlight.

Ql came out as a half-assed version of 1999 Quake 3. It had terrible input issues, atrocious server settings and people had all kinds of shit to go through just to purchase a subscription.
Let me also say that not much has changed since then.

As for the tournaments, iem was fantastic, yet a one time thing.
Ql disappeared from Dh along with the quake-loving admins, despite Sync's promises to get it back. And to my knowledge, gamegune never featured Ql.
Things went from bad to worse and this community is not to be blamed, since id remain in full control and it's up to them to promote their product the same way other companies do.

- How about other kinds of content, such as Qlprism/hook/extraQl, FragTV, Qlranks (tv), wolfcam?
Or hey, how about tutorials? Youtube is full of ql tutorials of all kinds, from how to make your first strafe jump all the way up to advanced map control techniques.
The content exists but it's separated from ql due id's laziness and unwillingness to work on this game and co-operate with this community.

- Back when I was still active, I met a hilarious number of people who played a shitload of games every day, yet didn't know anything about things such as dreamhack or how to play back demos.
And yea - this is a perfect example of how fucked up this game is.
Ql was supposed to be the centre for every quaker, yet even in 2015, you have to visit 3rd party sites such as esreality to get information on events and you have to visit this specific irc channel to get your organized tdm game.
How hard would it be to include a "upcoming events" window in that ancient interface or to use the empty in-game billboards to inform people? You can stream all you want, but half of the ql population will be still left in the dark.

I'll get to my original point and say it again: without full access to ql, this community is VERY limited in their actions and if you're about to discuss ql's failures some more, make sure to see both sides of the coin.

Again, here is a prime example of the attitude im talking about.
You are putting blame on id (3people) for not having promoted other peoples content essentially saying that ql media has failed because id didnt do enough....

You have several other scenes without any support of the game developers that are doing great, constantly producing content aswell as making sure their scene is thriving in terms of competition.

We even have instances were "dead" games have been completely revived out of sheer will..
