I think so. I don't think the amount of data (bandwidth) is very big for games in general. It's just the latency that matters. I get about 13 ping to Seattle servers, and mid 30s to Los Angeles. It's a plenty fat pipe (around 50Mb down and 8Mb up I think). I tried to contact QL support to see about hosting a local LAN server, but they responded pretty quickly with a no. I can't explain how much that bothers me, by the way. That Q3 in 1999 upon release had more flexibility than QL has right now. Le sigh.

Which port is being used could potentially be a problem. I remember at cs:s and L4D LANs we had to change the startup params of the games to use different client ports. I'm glad you said something, cause it made me think of this. Going to email support right now and ask...

ye bandwidth shouldn't be a problem, although 8mb up might be scratching it. What I'm a bit sceptical about is whether all the packages will go through without any noticable hickups. I've only done that with three people playing simultaneously and that went fine if I remember correctly. 15 though? maybe someone has experience with this or knows of a way to test it. in any case I guess you will want to enforce a no streams/downloads policy ;)

Talked to SyncError. He said ports, NAT, etc, won't be a problem with up to 20, he's done it at his house with no issues.

I've had 10 or so people at my house playing quake live no problem. The pings went from 15 to sea to about 25.

hmm, tempting though I don't have a car. you should probably set up quake 3 server with ra3/osp/cpma on it so you can actually play on lan.

I'm not as familiar with all the config settings, etc., with those installations, but it would be really fun to try. I did talk to SyncError, and dedicated LAN servers won't be happening for this event :(. Maybe in the future. I want to make this a yearly event, so I'll bug sync about it every year haha.

If you want to take Amtrak, I can pick you up at the Tacoma station. I've taken my computer on there before and it's not too bad.

I thought about it - we'll see how the bandwidth holds up. Do you mean the games or the players? I thought about setting up a live webcam of us, but not necessarily HD footy of the games. Turns out, I'm not that good at quake (1400ish elo, CA noob), and maybe am not interesting to watch, lol.

Not a bad idea at all. I just realized today that I should have a better plan as far as the games go, instead of just pubbing it the whole time or whatever. I don't want to host a cup yet though, I'm pretty busy with a lot of projects at work right now, and have a band coming to record a demo either right before or right after the LAN, and don't have time to organize a cup. I really want to make this a yearly event (if it goes well), and if that's the case, yes. Cup. Next year.

I'll be saving all my demos for sure. There will be some better players than me there (most of them, actually), and I'm really hoping to have at least a few cool coaching sessions while I duel. That part I want to actually film, and then edit it all later to make a couple new youtube videos. Like I looked it up the other day and fuck, man! I made like 21 quake videos on youtube! I put some time into that shit, you know? I want to make a few more, and try to get a little better. It's fun =).

I've never been much of a CTF player, but I don't mind any of the modes. I'm not sure how much this crowd plays CTF though, I think if there is going to be any, it'll be short lived.
