Well since I'm pretty sure he doesn't give a sh*t about LoL and other terrible games (Thorin seems like a Quake fan to me first and foremost) that pretty much counts as prostitution imo
exactly so that's prostitution pretty much, he pretends he likes those sh*tty games to be a part of the esports in-crowd. An even worse example would be 2gd, but that guy is an a**hole unlike Thorin who seems like a nice guy
Wow, you seem to mad. Why do you think they don't like the games they are covering? You don't have to love every game like your first born son, but you can still enjoy the game and the atmosphere. A good journalist loves to do his job, also when it's about another game/sport/person than your absolute favorite.
you don't bother replying or you can't reply because you don't have anything good to say? All I'm saying is if my passion is ice-hockey I won't go covering football coz that's where the money are, I stay authentic and try to make my own scene grow instead of selling out to the next hot thing
I get that you need to pay rent and stuff, but I don't believe it to be always a valid excuse for selling out. There's often another way to do stuff that you hadn't thought about coz you were busy jumping on the next trend to get validation. If you're happy with the squalor existence of Quake and arena fps then fine, I just thought it had so much potential that never got realized
CS could be legit if they made some changes to the gameplay. Realistic does NOT equal entertaining. These are videogames not a fkin military training simulator. I don't know why they got so stuck on this notion with these CoD clones, one hit kills, boring ass camping and burst assault rifles on ugly desert maps. The fact that Quake has completely unrealistic physics and gameplay is what makes it epic and a superior esport in every way. Do we want to see the most realistic fighting game with broken bones n shit, NO! we want Street Fighter because its completely unrealistic and awesome
I don't really get all this flaming I get tbh. I thought this was a site for Quake fans, I'm sure there are plenty of CS forums if you wanna hang out there
UT vs Quake. 90% of talk and explanation about UT and UT players. 10% talk about quake and quake players. Not recommending this to watch unless if you are really bored and have nothing else to do.
I quite intrigued with how carmac describes GitzZz as the most "Mechanically" gifted player of his era (in Unreal Tournament),
if anyone here has been following UT during that time, could you cite a perfect description of gitz's playstyle? (i guess you could say he was like czm in that sense)
He was a solid thinker, good tactics, some would say "emotionless" and he had great aim, especially with sniper.
He wasn't really strong in the creativity department or as Carmac puts it "flair".
being a long time player myself, I would describe him as one of the most "efficient" player's of all time (this is very German style anyhow). He used the least amount of effort to achieve the most effective positioning and cutoff's through his movement and expertise. There are some nice demo's up on youtube on the UT2004 Community channel.
it's 'murica.
Zero ping in UT was popular in instagib and such mods where the registration of the shots were clientside. It had a few bugs with that, cornerpeeking for example. This "newnet" thing is supposed to be a vastly improved netcode with lots of improved prediction algorithms.
Fantastic interview, quite intriguing questions. Also Carmac usually is always very evasive on his answers but you had him tell us some ver good insight of what goes on inside his head :D
Also would rate this 10/10 if you just pretended the camera wasnt there you kind of tend to look at it way too often compared to carmac, maybe hes more used to it than you.
All that did was remind me how retarded the ut armour system was, and consequently how it made duel retarded. Look at pain vs lauke on deck from 2002. pain dies straight away (probably shouldn't have, too aggressive) then lauke gets free reign over the next jacket spawn, leaving the "out of control" player with nothing to use at all. Opt to delay the jacket a bit and then go belt - you can get back to jacket before the next spawn. Almost 2 minutes where the "out of control" player has thigh pads.
While I think being in control should give you benefits, ut99 was way over the top. The epic mappers insistence on having all weapons on every map + 1 jacket + 1 belt + 1 thighpad was where the problem stemmed from. Deck with 2 jackets and belt would have played a lot better. 2 jackets and a keg. 3 jackets.
Whatever, just not one item that is worth three times the other with a spawn offset so the player with the better item can dominate the lesser easily.
I agree with carmac about the op weapons, they are fun and they also allow positional play/spam/ non aim play to a higher degree than quake. However the armour system and spawn times were wildly broken in ut99 :\ I think future "arena" fps should have this style of weapon as many players cannot aim. In COD and co this is fixed with spray - sometimes you get lucky.
His comparison to quakeworld is broken - he has obviously never played it (talking about weapons being overpowered, two are..) and comparing that to ut99. QW duel plays nothing, NOTHING like ut99 duel.
The best part of the qw weapons is tdm and the tdm maps. Watch DDKs series to understand. qw shows how to make this awesome - there are only 1-4 weapons per map worth getting and they spawn every 30 seconds. It could take a team several minutes to weapon up, even if they are left alone (e1m2). The weapons control the pace of the game in qw tdm. ut99 tdm with op weapons is the exact opposite since everyone basically starts with one and there are so many on the map there is no semblance of order at any point.
Thanks for the memories and it was a fun interview.
The reason that SC:BW was so popular is because the skill gap was so high. It was loved for that. And so was Quake. It's just unfortunate that the culture has changed.
Respect to Thorin for, basically, attempting to get Carmac to admit that Quake and BW are superior to what is currently popular. It kind of worked, too. Carmac's quite right when he puts forward the general argument that it's a very difficult thing to put one game above another, when one has either not 'become intimate' enough with a game to be able to judge it, or when it is clear that there are differences in skill between players of a game, thereby indicating a substantial enough depth of skill for the game to be of significance in a competitive environment. The currently popular games definitely involve a lot of skill, but one need not compare too closely to see the stark skill differences between the older titles and the newer ones, as all of us here are aware of. Carmac's keeping his mouth shut about a pretty obvious issue so I would say that, to a reasonable extent, he has 'sold out.' I don't believe that you can grow up playing Quake, or even UT, and end up being truly OK with the current esport scene. To be frank, Carmac's giving us a bullshit spiel to justify his and ESL's support for newer games. There isn't a natural cycle to support for things that are objectively good. You need to take a moral stance and reject financial gain in order for something good to happen, in any situation. It's not going to happen naturally, Carmac.
A legend that I would've loved to of heard talked about was Overtoad. He was a player who would have proven himself in New York as one of the best duelers, had his PantherXL not had issue's with the computers.
Edit: inb4 the hate about what he said on Quake xD. Also that he says "soccer" and not "football" xD.
