I think the Q4 respawning system is different from Q3 in the manner that it checks where you are(the killer) and respawns the victim at a certain spot as a result of the killer's position. Hence the "manipulating" by staying at a certain spot and Hunter respawning by the RL every time. If indeed Q4 respawning works like that it needs to be fixed.

Edit: Going to try to clarify. It seems to check where the KILLER is at the moment of respawning instead of where the VICTIM died like it did in Q3(I think).

My own exeperience to q3 is that the spawns, not always, but often are at the other side of the map compared to where the victim was when he/she got himself/herself killed. But i don't know if it's like that, maybe it just feels like that.

Yes you are correct, but the fact is that that map has to few spawns so it gets correct 99% of the time. This spawnsystem is better than q3 cause random spawnfrags are alot worse than controlled spawnfrags IMO.

it's spawn furthest from enemy. but random among spawnpoints far enough away. on phrantic however, it's like fazz said, the map has too few spawnlocations.

Altho, the furthest spawn theory is not 100%. Since sometimes enemys spawn right in front of you. Like on fleet @ ya. I've spawned in mega room @ edge when the enemy is right outsite and looking straight at the spawnpoint.

As long as it's random amongst a few spawn points far enough from each other it's fine but when you can control it like cooller does it becomes a problem. Glad to hear it's a map problem instead of a game problem.

Yeah, I was told it was zone spawns like UT1 though. Where as in UT2k3/4 it was "furthest away".

Good games!

This map seems to be all about rocket spam, hmm.
Made me realize Q4MAX should include an option to tune down the explosion sound of the rocket.. :-)

I had the impression both players didn't do their entire homework on phrantic. In the RA room you can use the slope lamp to get up to the higher ground where you have a lot better position for defending. Also, from there you can do a strafe jump to the small corridor to get outside.

I have not watched the demo yet but.. you think they didn't know this for real? I'm far from a pro but discovered this "trick" after 30 seconds or so while checking the map out. Kind of funny if guys like cooler did not know this.

He certainly did look like he knew about it. You have to ask yourself if it is a risk worth taking. If you miss that jump you're in the lava and your enemy is going to pump something into your face, and it won't be semen.

Fox' demo from the 2on2 against (don't remember, but atm there are only demos from one game with ic) on Edge was quite nice though. "Finally" someone made Q4 look fast instead of boring around.

Cooler spams spawn point with RL Hunter dies .... repeat!

The problem with this demo is the map, basically it is too small for these highly skilled players. They can completely control the map because they can get from one armour /weapon to another so quickly.

The tactics seem to be, RL attacks only, stay high and cyle RA, and in this game it is just so repetitive, it becomes boring.

That's my view anyhow.

Yeah I get the same thing with the name energizer.

The game was recorded with Xbattle, but you don't need this to see the demo, only the bright skins and hud etc.

IMO the demo was very interesting indeed, as is most any Cooller demo.

The Diablo POV vs Cooller is a very good match for ten minutes or so as well.

imo the movement is completely fucked up. it's probably just the weird ramp jumps I'm not used to, but whenever I watch someone moving in Q4 it reminds me of a complete newb touching any game with strafejumping for the first time. the relation between speed and jump height just completely doesn't fit in my eyes. or maybe more like cs, jump, stay up in the air for ages, and fall down like a rock..

Hm, I was expecting more from Cooller. He doesn't look as tight in Quake 4 as Quake 3. From watching this I doubt he'll be as highly ranked in Quake 4 "just yet". Maybe hes missing his acceleration? :)

You can fix that. I have accelration because I modified my mx500 driver and it works damn fine. Now my rail rocks again. :p ;)

The only problem is that I have accel in windows now but as long as I have accel in q4 I dont care.

Nah, it needs to stay.

If you notice Cooller was just one move ahead in most situations. His positioning was usually very good through the match.

This is a great map. We need more railgunless maps. The spam spawn location is nerfed because a RL is right there, but someone needs to think about changing something, but overall... I love the demos on this map.

Just on a side note: Cooller (after wining the tourney) stated he did take Hunter lightly so he lost the winner's bracket. Then he just played to his fullest I guess. And Hunter did beat some really good russian Q3 players too. Oh and he also was interview and said that the level of play in Ukraine is a little bit higher than in Russia. But that was before the Grand final as I remember.

Look at the only maps that were played map1/11/12, all fairly open. If the maps are anything like that then it will just be even more rail crazy but I cant see it being all about spam..

Nice demo. Great to get demos of this type during the beta phase of a map. Spawns are one of the hardest things to tune, and very often spawn placement issues aren't clear until someone really learns to exploit them. It seems Q4's spawn algorhythm isn't making things any easier either.

This demo is rubbish, there is no skill in constant spamming, I don't blame the players, if you give them a ton of rockets and no rail then they don't have much choice

still I could only watch it for 10 minutes then had to switch it off, utterly boring - and this is from a quake fan!

I only hope this isn't indicative of whats to come else q4 will have a very short life indeed

I tried the beta and the final version of swq4dm1 and tried playing it in VQ4 and in XB. Not working. :(

Removed a bunch of maps now; the demo starts loading and i see a warning briefly before the map loads. I hear the spawn sound of the beginning of the demo and then Q4 crashes. :S

Do i need to uninstall the Q4 patch or something, or the beta version of swq3dm1 (i used the final now)?

Ok i found out how to play the demo. I moved all custom maps out of q4base except the swq4dm1 beta version, the tmp01 pack and the pro-bl1p map i believe. For some reason i have the feeling that it might have been the tmp02 pack that caused the demo problem but having the phrantic beta only (not together with the final) in q4base might be enough.

The demo is using the BETA version of Phrantic, maybe you have the newer Phrantic?

That would be my guess. That, or start up Quake 4, load Xbattle (even though it shouldn't matter), and then play the demo.

FarQ

Why are Q4 demos relatively boring to watch compared to Q3? I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something missing. I never feel the excitement when watching a demo, even with awesome players like cooller. Maybe it's the maps, or the sounds, or the movement or the enemy skins, or all of those. And all that rocket spam was ridiculous.

Good point. Could well be, yea.
But maybe it's also because all the demos I've seen are one player completely obliterating the other with each frag coming one after the other in no time at all plus spam, spam, spam. Like a foregone conclusion before the duel is even 3 minutes old.
I prefer to see duels where there's more tension, where the scores are closer and getting a frag against each other is like golddust . Maybe when a match with players such as czm v cooller ( if czm is even gonna be playing q4?) comes around there'll be more defensive play going on.

If any of that makes sense? :p

excellent play, but map requires corrections, respawns must be corrected, but that funny observes, as he not coming off place and not changing weapons beats on respawns
