I don't know about the uni's themselves, but I do know the following about the areas.

Birmingham is a dump, the people have horrible, annoying grating accents (which u might pick up) and there is a lot of crime in the area and a LOT of dodgy people.

Warwick is a really NICE area, castle nearby, people are a lot richer there, so the scumbug/semi-normal ratio is a lot better than brum.

Essex, prolly more expensive down that way, and do you really want to dodge essex boys in their modified Escorts and one thing.
Essex ladies could be interesting, but you'll probably catch something as they would have slept with everyone.

Bath is a REALLY REALLy nice place,lots of history and it's a fairly wealthy place.
You'll meet some good people here, people you can trust, same applies elsewhere I guess, but I would sayd Bath is the most appealing geographically, 2 hours from London, and 1.5 from brum.
And it has lots to do there.

I don''t know the rest, but unless they are in Cam, OX I would have to go with Bath, then Warwick.
Would not waste my time with the others, you'll pick up some bad habbits there and prolly some STd's:)

Warwick and Bath are top universities but as towns...dunno, beautiful but kinda dead. Look more like villages to me. From what I remember from a friend, Bath has a Nazi firewall in place so I don't think you can do a lot of gaming from there. Warwick has a CPMA sever :D but I'm not sure you can play from the dorms.

LSE and UCL apart from being top unis they happen to be in London...and you simply can't beat that.

you forgot to mention the tiny detail that leaving in London costs a lot, especially if u r a student and you don't work. London is an option only if you are wealthy, or you plan to study AND work.

I was not think about gaming to be honest, but if it is an important to you then I guess u need to dig deeper, but do uni pc' run next gen games. I don't think so, and unless u reside on camp, then you'll just get a phat connection in student digs (and share it with 10 other peeps:P)

Ok, London is also very cool I agree. HOWEVER!
London is EXPENSIVE and sooner or later someone will do something nasty there (terrorism).
It also has loads of down and outs and loads of immigrants begging on the streets.
I would only move to London if you can stay in a nice part and you have a rich family who can afford to give you money, or you'll be working your ass off (not literally I hope:P) just to make ends meet.

Bath and Warwick are quieter, but deep down that's good as you still want to come away with it with an education right?

Very good uni as well (one of the top after the merge) and free 10mbit for everyone :D I'm talking about 10 totally unrestricted mbits/s in your room! No firewalls of any kind! 10-14ms on all UK servers!

As a city, Manc is far from quiet with a large number of young people but quality-wise...it's a bit low.

As far as education is concerned, for Economics I think Warwick, UCL and LSE should be the top in your list. I don't know if you plan to work here but keep in mind that by joining one of those unis not only gives you a top degree but also strengthens your public relations since you are likely to meet several of your colleagues in your future job.

it's 70% internationals, which i didnt think i'd mind
but it can be very frsutrating
the uk contingent can be found mostly as members of the athletics union

the halls are very expensive (the best ones 4k+ for 40 weeks) but thats no problem if youre rich (as most ppl here are) or if you get a job (like me)

OH and you can play any games here apart from mmorpgs, because it lags out. they block NOTHING from halls lol
only thing is connection can be a bit random, but when youre downloading 900k/sec you cant complain. in cs i get pings of 4-5 to most servers, pk and q3 are also low. the 10mbit is also free - on JANET :)
dont know what games you play, but wc3 also works.

voice comms work a treat, as does bit torrent and other p2p networks. the connections arent monitored by the uni, so download what u like, but beware the MPAA and such if using bittorrent.

uploading to some ftp's works fine, at high speed - others dont. its a tad random.

However I not only need to get into the schools, but I also need to be accepted as a Home/EU student. Iceland isn´t a member of the EU, but we're members(with Norway) of EEA which is a side treaty of some sort to the EU, so some uni's categorize me as a home/eu, and some don´t.

I can´t afford the international fees(10k vs. 1-3k per year ;/ )

must be très clever to have got into lse, wd ;> since i'm pretty much set on uni of london for 2006 entry, i did a little reading. the general feeling i got on lse was that, despite being academically of the highest standard, it lacked that social environment that appears at other universities. i can't fully recall why, but i'm sure it was put down to the lack of a large campus, low number of students, limiting inner-city location? bleh, i dunno, what's the social like at lse really then? can't go to warwick because it's not far enough away from me to justify moving away ;[

we have a very british pub culture to rival that of any british uni.. the only thing is its very athletics union focussed, and some people look down on you for it ;x
there is a large group of people at the LSE who dont approve of that kinda lifestyle but i say fuck em :)
every week in "the beaver" (our paper, hehe) theres some kind of article arguing that theres not enough britishness about the uni, or that theres too much.
it just depends what youre into.

yeah, there are the (typically asian, sorry, but its true) people who waste accom. fees by living in the library, but lse students DO know how to have fun :)

if youre not into AU kinda things, the largest social do's will tend to be within halls - bankside and high holborn being especially good - but again, halls for the most part often feel more like hotels.

basically, british people tend to feel a bit isolated and disappointed with the supposedly "refreshing" variety of culture at the school... until they find their niche :)

I've heard very good things about bath. I live next door to plymouth uni if you wanna go there, quite a hectic party down here, nice place to stay, but I suppose you wouldn't wanna move down here :))

Depends what you want. If you want that grimy city, firday night punch up, hanging around with a bunch of scallys sort of feel, then go to somewhere like birmingham or manchester. If you want to stay somewhere a bit quieter, cleaner and nicer with a bit of culture then go somewhere like bath or warwick. I would personally pick bath just for the city but as i say its down to what u want.

Bath is a good uni, but the city is boring as fuck. Birmingham is quite a good uni, but not great - but the city is great. Good social scene, shopping, etc.. All the benefits of a big city but not as congested and expensive as london.
Warwick is similar to Bath. Good uni, but bit of a boring place. Quite good for sports though.
Essex I would probably avoid the most out of that list.

Why apply there if you know nothing about them? Didnt you go and look around or anything first?

out of those universities, I'd say either bath or warwick. A word of warning tho, the competition for places in those two will be fierce. You could have the equivalent of straight a's and not get offered a place in either of them if you're unlucky. yaay for easier A levels!

Univ. of Birmingham, I'm not sure about..

Univ. of Warwick & Bath University both are out of town campuses, not bad, but it can make you feel a bit isolated. Nice towns though.

Univ. of Essex I think you'd spend the rest of your life denying you have a connection with it. :p

UCL & LSE both are expensive places to live, and London doesn't suit everyone. If you can hack it and don't mind living in the 3rd drawer down of some Iraqi landlord's cupboard at £300 a week, then out of the two LSE would probably look better later on in life.
