i watched the vid now also, and i must say, ut2k4 is truely one class below q3 osp & cpma. It still is a great game, but it jsut doenst compare imo.

in q3 all weapons are used a lot (except bfg that is used only in ffa).

It really depends on the map & players.

Lauke favours LG > shock whilst falcon favours shock > all weapons =]

the map is very complicated which gives way to alot of prediction work. The most effective way to punish you opponent in this circumstance is with the shock combo. But thats also the hardest to master.

both tanking armors and try to hit a shock-combo ... at least at the end some closerange fights.
maybe its the map which is quite boring, dunno, but UT99 was way more interesting ...

I agree with you the map is too defensive based which makes it too easy to run and too hard to attack... so noone ever attacks on it and the score never gets higher than 10.
besides that falcon had a great comeback with that huge shockcombo at the vials near the 50a.

tbh it wasnt that close, it was clear that falcon would win the game as soon as overtime started, he controlled the 100 armor really well, besides I thought it was a little boring, Vo0 vs Fatal1ty > ut2k4 match

but the movement is just boring with 2 equal skilled players, because you cant get the opponent into an infight unless he does something stupid.. so there's no use for any other weapons than asmd/light :/

This is a very nice match indeed but i can fully understand that some non-ut (or ut99) players aren't exactly blown away by this vid.

UT2k4 Duel isn't that nice a game from a spectators view. Although it takes an incredible amount of skill to be playing the way Lauke and Falcon do, there's just no denying that asmd and sniper are the predominant factors in 2k4 duels which results in mostly mid- to long range battles. Add in some flak and you got three weapons which are used with very little close range battles.

Also the shield gun and crap maps like Lea don't help to make it more exciting for the casual spectator.

it does take some skill to play this game like that. but its boring as hell to watch compared to Q3 or painkiller. and those games still take more skill since hitscan weapons are overrated.

Remember .... It is NOT a frag movie. Sure there are better movies to display better ut2k4 skills, but what we have is a match between 2 equal players on a new (very recently released) map during a decider game. This movie was intended to show the tense of the match, not amazing skills or crazy amount of frags.

It does show skill, movement, aim and decisions of whether to be agressive or defensive. Psycological decisions to try and stay ahead. Though yes there aint many frags, but frags dont really show anything anyway, winning does.

they ofcouse dont have the minimap, the timing panel, or the health stats, that would be to lame, the stuff you see is an mutator called "CompaMut" designed to let specs that dosnt know much about the game to get futher into the game and understand why the players do as they do.

I'm an ut99 player and one thing that impressed me was the aim of both falcon and lauke here, suppose it's 10 ping, that would explain it ;) some ut2k4 movies do seem slow, compared to some ut99 movies but this here definetly was not the case. The match was very tense, indeed fun to watch. n1 :]

There sure were some good shots, yes it's lan, yes it's incredibly easy to hit once you have the skill. Hitscan and item timing are the easiest skills you can dedicate to yourself, while at the same time they are the most important in this game. Good game nonetheless, but I think ut2k4 is very limited, hence a dozen of players are just as skilled and it's been like that for a long time. As you can see in this game both players played basically the exact same style, equal experience, just as good aim, just as good flak,- anything really. None of the players did huge mistakes, and the margins were extremely small some times. I think the winner of this match was random from the start! Only small decisions of whether or not to take an action, and which action, could influence the outcome!

and that's the harder kind of skill to learn :)

after watching this video it was great to realize that unlike ut2k4, ut(1) is a fun game to play!

Objectively one might say the game was close, intense and good skill between two top players, but one might also say the game is a slowmotion soup of terrifyingly boring point&click+hit&run my grandmother would fall asleep infront of.

Of course games must be compared, this is to be able to look for the ultimate game in future. But instead of comparing to one game, or subjectively your favourite game, I think it's important to compare to all hardcore fps games. Take much of what's good from the dawn of the genre, follow the evolution, cut out the things that didn't work, add some new elements if necessary and there you go. Thing is, ut2k4 was NOT what the majority of gamers were looking for. A lot of things about the game is good but it just doesnt apply to enough players, much because you HAVE to play in a certain way to be successful at it. The lacking ability of playing real close combat and being forced to mid/longrange blue-beam clicking is painful for a lot of oldschool RL owners from any game I'm sure. It just doesn't offer the variety in general gameplay that games prior to it have done and therefore alot of people really dislike the game.

You talk about the majority of gamers. Do you know that most gamers don't play FPS games? and what about FPS gamers ? Most don't play UT or Q3, they play CS...... Just to come with a bit of relativity.

I thought it was obvious I was talking about FPS games and the oldschool style games which sprouted from doom, duke nukem and quake1 (first really good fps multiplayer game I guess), and it's community/supporters. Not battlefield, cs, cod etc. I'm not talking about game editors I'm talking about what people who play these games may think of ut2k4, or other fps games, and what they look for in a game. I especially mean those who have played FPS for many years, not those who have played just one favourite game. What the hell is winz right about, all he is saying is that people who don't like ut2k4 are stupid. I had a go at explaining why (almost) everyone except ut2k4 players themselves dislike the game and don't find it particularly skillful or entertaining.

Of course I know we're talking about hardcore fps games, I just show the diversity of taste in games. Hardcore fps gamers is a small community amongst gamers in general, as ut2k4 is a small (even not that small I think) community in the world of hardcore fps games.

No no, Quake 3 players dislike UT2004, you are on ESR here. As a matter a fact they pretty much dislike anything which is not Q3.
And that is, because those games are not Quake 3.

You can see it all over again, in any game. A lot of UT players stick with UT, only a part moves on to UT2K3 and a big part from that to UT2K4. Same for CS and CSS, or QW and Q2 and Q3.

It's really a mental thing in a way (I think) that a certain game, you play a lot, most likely your first real serious game, sets standards. These standards tell you how a FPS game should be, and should be played. So if a rocket in a sequel is going 120mph instead of 140mph it feels wrong, because that is not the way a game is intended to be. The previous game you played set the standard and that's what all the games should listen too.

UT2K4 does not have stafejumping.
It has some really weirdass fucked up movement, called dodging by these UT players. And dodging is so stupid, it is so unrealistic and feels so fake. It's not like Q3 movement which feels very natural and right, and is ofcourse, very realistic.
The weapons are leaning towards instant hitscan. In QW we used to play with rockets, close combat prediction skill. And this is how games should be.
UT2K4 has the shieldgun which makes it easier to run away and defend yourself, you are not supposed to do this, a person who has more health and armor than you and is winning the fight you both just entered should always kill you, that is how it should be. (/sarcasm mode off for a moment here: the shieldgun works out well in fun, public games by average players, onslaught for example. I am pretty sure that how it works out in 1v1 Worldcups is not how Epic supposed it to be)
Conclusion: UT2004 is shit.

Sarcasm mode off again; Indeed if you don't really understand UT2004 games well, apart from the close scores and very close margins the game on this map is pretty boring for a UT2K4 game. I indeed helped to build the map but from day 1 it was obvious for me that the map would never bring real good enjoyable 1v1 matches. It simply has to do with the huge scale/size of the map. Now the game leans even much more than normally towards instant hit weapons and especially the shockrifle, a gun which is simply a bit too strong compared to the other guns (since is usefull in pretty much every situation, from long range to close combat. And this is actually a rule the does go up for 1v1 hardcore FPS gamestandards, that a gun should seriously have it's weaknesses in different ranges and positions.)
I've said from day one, that the map should be resized to only 60 or 70%.

I am afraid by the way, that there will never be any games as good as Q3 1v1 competitively wise. Of course Q3 has it's flaws, flaws and weaknesses that made me easily choose UT series over Q3 (actually it were the UT strengths that drew me to UT instead of Q3 in the old days, but it were the weaknesses that never made me consider starting to play Q3, although Q3 in general had more tournaments).
But I seriously think that there will never come out a better platform for 1 versus 1 FPS tournaments, unless Q4 MP indeed is very similar to Q3, let's hope. I am not saying Q3 is a better or more enjoyable game than an UT series game, I'm saying that is slightly better suited for competitve tournament play , this is because imo, it has less flaws.

Great movie, I loved it. These are the kind of things we need to get pro-gaming more distributed to the general public. Good players, nice commenting and a great close game.

This is fantastic, the minimap was really cool, I wish other games had that. I thought the way the two players spent so long trying to outposition another was great and it's ace to see a game with an advanced movement system and complex strategic and positional play aswell as different weapon weights and styles of use.
