What I understood: there was high suspicion around firebot's rise, and Sombra (and maybe others) were convinced that firebot was using a wallhack at that particular tournament. To prove it, as well as out of spite to beat firebot, Sombra used a wallhack himself.

Hey, ESR was always the site for trolls, with minimum moderation, I remember boycotting it for years before finally getting an account to announce our tournaments.

Only thing that's changed in the last 5-8 years was Tim Willits finally killing AFPS for us boomers. Fire_bot was never considered a cheater, not in 2008 and not later. He was a solid player who would take a map from the pros every now and then (especially on aero). He attended DHS 2012 and got a top16 finish. On the other hand, s*mbra only attanded some regional spanish lolcups and his biggest achievement was beating rapha in online practice games a couple of weeks before he got caught cheating.

Thorin is basically consoling sombra here instead of what he should be doing instead of calling him out for bullshit. Why is Thorin letting him accuse fire_bot, who is a clean, LAN-proven player, without any grounds? Why do neither of them mention the fact that sombra was later banned in Quake Live for cheating? Thorin is definitely an asswipe but is he really this stupid? This whole thing is really weird.

This reasoning around the wallhack is obviously retarded in itself and I've seen about 10 different hackers over the years make the same excuse and no one believed them. I have heard in the past that some hacks let you identify other hackers or something like that, and maybe that's true. Even without the tools puritan mentions above, observation and collective demo analysis is a tried and tested method of catching hackers.

Also, as a side note, he also used a radar hack, which is not mentioned in the vid. He used it at the same time as a wallhack.

If you put on a balance the amount of hard work and good things done on LAN by this guy it outweights the cheating incident. I remember Sombra and Akiles showing up on events and competing and I don't remember all those keyboard warriors on forums that never had the courage to show up on LAN. These guys were training with ping 120 and then having close matches against iC on tournaments.

Time to move on, this shit was 15+ years ago. Others have had second chances sooner.

For online events, everyone should be recording their own keyboard and screens as a requeriment anyway.

I actually would like to see this guy train and place well on future events. I would use it as a motivation.

IIRC in QC, he qualified with his mate for the 2v2 LAN tourney, however, when that date came close, on his stream he claimed to be sick and that he wouldn't go to LAN because of that....

I have no idea about QC since I don't really follow it, I was talking at least during the Q3 days, Akiles and Sombra nicknames seem familiar to me as I watched tons of demos and I reckon these guys were attending many tournaments back then. So I can respect the amount of effort they've dedicated to the craft. Specially since it was before it was cool to be a progamer, you had to carry heavy bags with CRTs and you did it for the quest to become the best more so than money, there wasn't barely anything compared to modern eSports.

Im not downplaying how cheating ruins your career and you should be severely punished, but all things considered, perhaps by now he could get a second chance. I mean, of all people, I would guess at this point this guy wouldn't even think about cheating again.

As long as a proven cheater does not show remorse, admitting and showing understanding that cheating was a mistake that hurts other people (maybe not monetary, but in terms of competition, effort put in a hobby etc.), there should not be any second chances.

This is about character and trustworthiness. Instead of owning it up, Sombra deflects and accuses other people...at this age. After 15 years.
