Certain European countries offer more support if you're a citizen and in the lower 1/2, maybe even 2/3rds, of the income bracket. It's not uniform and different countries have different drawbacks, particularly if you aren't fluent in the native language. If you make over 50k / yr you have to pay US taxes on top of local taxes anyway.

The US generally has stronger anti-discrimination laws. Age, disability, national origin, etc. In some countries like Spain it's not possible to declare personal bankruptcy to deal with housing debt insolvency, etc. Europe has better healthcare for half the population, but given the option I'd rather have Blue Cross & Blue Shield insurance in the US. Higher education is cheaper in Europe as it's tax-subsidized, but liberal arts colleges and the top 100 or so doctoral schools are probably better in general for those who attend. A 4th year of undergraduate liberal arts education goes a long way towards making people more well rounded.

There are a lot of other small differences, most of them aren't really a big deal.

But what kills me there is that cold ass fuck winter. I'd recommend Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands. Plenty of minorities but they're still very homogenous and society remains very similar to before immigration.

That said, Norway has some of the best nature and hiking in Europe, but if you're gonna be living in Oslo or Bergen you won't get too much of that :). Great place to visit though!

I'm looking into moving abroad in a few years and currently I'm looking at Switzerland and Norway after recommendations from collegues and friends that have already done the move.

They're quite similar countries once you start comparing them. The impression so far is that Norway has a slightly better public education system while Switzerland offers way better salaries (at least within Business Intelligence), even more spectacular nature and you actually get four seasons instead of the dull and dark climate you get up here in Sweden and Norway where the summer usually tends to be rainy, cloudy and dissapointing. Still, it would take next to no effort to adapt to Norwegian and I know that the working atmosphere in Norway can be very relaxed. Unfortunately I don't know how Switzerland compares on that matter.

I wouldn't say Switzerland has "more spectacular nature" than Norway but then again I'm a sucker for Norway. Can't wait to fly back there :)

For a Swedish I would definitely consider Norway first (language, culture, proximity etc). But at the same time it might be too similar to Sweden in many ways and thus not very interesting for you.

Switzerland has a pretty relaxed atmosphere as well and if you like French or German and can find a good job there I'm sure you would like it.

I've recently moved to Switzerland to work as a software engineer. If you have any kind of tech skills you'll be in high demand here. I'm a native Englishman who speaks German fluently, has pretty decent French and a degree in Computer Engineering, and I found there were more opportunities for me here than back at home.

I can't comment on the education system since I was educated in the UK and I don't have any kids to send to school here. But the general quality of life is leaps and bounds ahead of anything I'd expected before moving (currently back in the UK to visit family atm and the contrast between life here and there is surprisingly great).

I don't have kids, but I think switzerland would be a great place to raise them.

I think if you plan to live in any metropolis in a European country, you're going to encounter minorities regardless, even in countries like Norway or Finland which have a homogenous population.

Staying in America is a better choice education-wise, because the country still houses many of the best post-secondary schools in the world. Why else are foreigners constantly enrolling in our universities even though they have to pay double or triple the tuition fees? Also, I think you are placing too much stock on primary education.

To get what you want overall, you just need a good job. If you and your spouse can make it to the mid-upper/upper class bracket, then you can move to a neighborhood which will undoubtedly be more homogenized. Obviously these examples are one-sided. If you love the cold and have no issues with little daylight, then yes, maybe Finland is the place for you.

i wrote this almost 8 years ago. a lot has changed globally. i still am tired of american culture but i at the time thought American culture leads to people being isolated and feeling depressed and after traveling around the world in Europe and Oceania as well Ive realized the same problems exist in many other places and the wgole world is struggling with many of the same "1st world problems." i dont think i will find meaning in Europe 8 years later but one thing is true is that it would probably take me out of my comfort zone. in america you can get really comfortable living an unconcious and convenient life (and get fat from it too). most days feel exactly the same to me. i think if i had to actually struggle living in a foreign country maybe id be more concious and less of a lamb. america is actually better than europe in a lot of ways the past 8 years... europe has had to struggle with a more crippled central bank and a lot of debt issues plus an influx of immigration issues that make "building a wall" seem trivial in comparison.

My wife and I are in a similar position, Germany went dogshit and in Berlin you have pay a lot of money for private schools so your children don't get infected with 3rd-world-retardation (our children aren't in school yet, but my brother has to pay roughly 1000€ a month for his to 2 brats).

My wife has spanish/french ancestry, but she discarded those options by herself, due to poor education system/3rd-Worlders (which also are the reasons her parents left Spain/she left France).
My favourite pick is Poland, the homeland of the european masterrace, it has a strong economic growth for a very long period, it is under the top 5 education systems in Europe and they use teamcolor "0xFFFFFFFF".
My children speak a bit of polish, it is our secret language because my wife doesn't understand it; but there lies the problem, it would be hard for her to learn polish as her fifth language. So my concern is that she will feel in disadvantage when I suggest it/we finally move there. Furthermore, when taking the future climate change into account, it would be smart to go further north than Poland.

When judging by education standards according to the PISA-study from 2018 that recently got published, the very top picks are asian countries, I like those tiny and cute guys, they are friendly, reliable, reasonable and so on, but their language is way too hard to learn. Also I am worried about the hard working conditions there and the excessive drill they have at school.

I moved from Belgium to Poland about 5 years ago or so and I'm raising a family here. You are mostly right and it's a good place to live. I prefer it over Belgium and that surprises pretty much anyone I talk to.

From my perspective, your perception of Poland is mostly correct. But I'll add a few more things:

Life for non-Polish speakers: the language is really, really shit to learn. Even though I speak 4 other languages, I lost motivation to learn Polish quite early on due to slow progress. Then again, you don't really need it to get around. More importantly, what is your wife's current job? IT is where you want to be. Good salaries, low cost of life = live like a king. If you speak no Polish but a foreign language but you're not in IT, then outsource centers are your option. They pay decent with good benefits, but most of those jobs will suck the life out of you. I don't know of any other large job categories in which it's easy to make a good living without knowing Polish. Poles naturally will get preference over you for any job that is not in a corporation.

The air. It's very unhealthy and you'll start to feel sorry for raising your kids in such an environment. I did a lot of research on this and it's the one single reason we're considering moving. Don't think that you can escape it by living just outside the city. It's basically the entire lower half of the country that has a serious problem with it. They're slowly improving things though, but the impact those improvements have is not sure yet. Tri-city / Gdansk has very good air. But it's likely going to have problems with flooding soon (check some global warming flood prediction maps).

Health-care: public healthcare usually does the job for free. However all decent employers give you a private health-care package (Luxmed or Medicover). Doctors speak English there and have proper equipment etc. My employer even provides private healthcare for my entire family. That is quite exceptional though.

(Regarding outsourcing centres, I am not a huge fan of such and will do anything to prevent it.)
I work in mechanical engineering and speak polish, so it will be easy for me. She doesn't work in IT, it is called "Bioingenieurwesen" in german (I don't know the correct english term for it, I would translate it as bioengineering, biological engineering, biochemical engineering or bio-chemistry, basically she forces/modifies tiny cells/lifeforms to produce stuff which is needed for medical reasons, I call it "micro-frankensteining").
As you said regarding IT, I assume that in most high technology fields the language barrier is pretty negligible, because anyone speaks english anyway and salaries ain't on our list of problems.
But you are right about having a harder time finding a job in the first place as a foreign speaker and my main concern is the language barrier at everyday situations outside of her working place, aswell as getting her motivated to learn the language. This also applies to most of the other countries I look into and I am afraid smartphone apps that combine language-learning with fun-games won't do the trick, which makes the english speaking Canada a reasonable pick, because we both already speak english. But on the other hand, the country suggestions she made so far also would result in her (and me) having to learn a new language and she seemed pretty determined about it.
Our kids will learn any language, there I am not worried at all, but it would be nice for them to start learning the target language before they enter school.

That is a very good point! I haven't taken air pollution into consideration at all yet and since Poland uses a lot of coal energy, this should be a huge factor to take into account. I just added air (and general water/earth) pollution to my list of things to compare, thanks for the idea, I really appreciate such suggestions!

Yes, I also already collected the prediction maps of flooding and temperature rise, because I don't want to pay for land/house in a spot that will get flooded by water or sweat.

I confirm that your overview is pretty accurate. I will add to it that there's ton of work offers to finance centers where the most important aspect is the knowledge of some foreign language more than experience of finance sector.

The air is bad especially in Sillesia and Lesser Poland regions. Since coal was forbidden for private use as heating source in Cracow we see improvement but it's not enough as there's still too much of it around the city. I think that in 10 years coal will be banned in whole region and the situation will get better. Also the problem exists only during ~3 months of winter and the climate is warming so this is going to be better for sure.

I pay roughly ~133 euros each month to go to a sports club. I could pay for a gym that costs 13 euros a month. Instead I pay for one that costs 10 times more. The difference is in the type of people that go there.

13 euros - people look less put-together. There aren't families, more students, (still attractive people), everyday folk.

133 euros - lots of white families. Instagram type models and toned-cyclist chicks.

My point is that if you manage to upgrade your lifestyle by improving your career prospects or your lifestyle you might find a community or city that fits your needs to be surrounded by people like you better.

There was a study that in Washington D.C. there were two areas that were less than 10 miles apart from each other. One had a 30 year higher life expectancy than the other. It's not what country you live in that matters so much but the life you live.

Also, America is very diverse. It's a big misconception to think it's the same everywhere. There's wide diversity in the climate, geography, population density, socioeconomic, language/culture, etc.. The American south (particularly Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama) is usually the part associated with "Muricah!" but it also includes some strong Spanish/Hispanic, French/Creole, and eastern European cultural concentrations. South Florida, for example, has a very strong Cuban and Latin American influence throughout.

There's various German communities around the US. You might find some parts of cities which have large concentrations of German-speakers and stores that carry German imported goods/wares. The upper midwest states (Wisconsin, North/South Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, etc.) have some high concentrations of German immigrants.
