But I do hope these kind of prize pools do get players like Cypher, who tend to have Quake as only a secondary game these days, to take things more seriously.

Cypher is looking pretty bad actually. For instance, 3 days before the tournament he's too busy with Apex Lengeds to find time to practice for quake.

And last week i saw a little of his quake practice sessions.

The man is shot to bits.

Every time he dies for whatever reason he rages. Even if he's leading 15-4 with 30 seconds left in the match. And he can't practice for more than 3-4 matches before getting too tired or upset and changing back to Apex.

He has 0 stress tolerance left. Zero, zilch, nada. To think he was once the coldest assassin in quake, with steel nerves and an uncrackable will.

Spending the days smoking anything that burns and drinking doesn't lead to the stablest neurochemical balance, let's just say. It's just sad.

And K1llsen is killsen, he always looks exceptional in practice, but in tournament days you can flip a coin to see which version of killsen will show up; if he's stable he's gonna steamroll trough anyone, otherwise he'll implode spectacularly. No in between.

Someone who's actually underrated and could susprise a lot instead is Avek. Since he finally got a pc able to run QC at decent fps he's looked better than ever. It isn't reflected in his seeding because he only got it for his last 3 matches or so, but he looked very good in those.

Cypher was 9th in Stage 2, 8th in Stage 3, and is now 4th in Stage 4. He has definitely been coming along nicely this past year. Just a couple of days ago he has beaten k1llsen, who is the Stage 3 champ and is also looking in great shape.

I haven't been keeping up with Cypher's personal affairs, but yeah, it seems like he has more in him. He is all aim these days. Since his aim is so extraordinary, frankly the best out there atm, he doesn't have to rely on strategy as much.. but it feels like he could take his game to a whole other level and become basically unbeatable. When he gets beaten it's basically because he's slacking off.. he seems out of it, not really focused / concentrated on the game sometimes, while showing flashes of absolute genius at other times.

Yep, with k1llsen it's definitely "flip a coin". Won QCon last year and Stage 3 finals, then really showed nothing special in the Stage 1 and 2 finals.
With Cooller it's "flip a coin 1000 times", hehe.

Av3k has been looking pretty f-ing decent these past few months. But let's be real here - he has never been able to pull it together and really follow through in a major tournament. That's why I don't mention Toxic either.. another one of those who will find a way to lose when push comes to shove.

Av3k and Cypher both look like real contenders. Av3k has had lots of really close games/matches with all the top players. Keep in mind that Av3k placed 2nd at Dreamhack Winter 2018. His aim was just nasty, and he defeated Cooller to go to Grand Finals against Rapha. I think he was worn out by his long series against Cooller, and his games against Rapha were over before they began.

Toxic really does have exceptional mechanics but he has no other modes besides hyper-aggression or run away. He doesn't seem to have any patience for building control or waiting for situations. He's got tunnel vision for combat only. I wonder lately if he doesn't really like the game, but it's just something for him to do. He kinda seems checked out, like he's just going through the motions.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if tox only plays QC cause he 'has to' and would rather play something else. Like Diabotical.
