it makes perfect sense to me, quake is based on strafe-jumping, considered to be exploit by most players, hence it's a failure by design, you think it might win, but its never is gonna happen because its based on failed design, that's why there is only pro players defending it, or those using this exploit, everyone else doesn't even care if quake succeeds or not because they don't like strafing.

If it was something simple, like just pressing a button to go faster, no one would consider it an exploit. The fact that strafe jumping is harder to learn doesn't make it an exploit. Everyone knows about it; it's not hidden in any way.

good, i also have no problem with strafing tbh, i just don't like this qc game. i am still playing cpma and q3 though, just for fun. hope they fix ql crashes, and that's enough quake for me.

I love Quake's movement mechanics, but I'm obviously biased through my experience with the games. It's a much more interesting and fluid way of accelerating than just pressing a button. Once you have practised it, it's all about feel. Plain old rectangular movement in other FPS feels way too boring after Quake.

Also, interesting that you mention CS, which also has similar mechanics for gaining momentum: bunny hopping, surfing etc

I highly doubt the reason people aren't playing the game is because you can "gain speed with movement"

it's a combination of all things, and strafing is one of them, toxic community is another one, poor developer management might be another one and the list goes on, the bottom line is no one is going to save a poor product from failure.

people want instant gratification.
quake doesn't offer that.
it's like any high level activity.
