btw the KI remake you speak of is regarded unanimously as an awesome game. the gameplay part can be subjective of course, you either like it or not, but the polish the game has now is incredible. the netcode is virtually flawless, the tutorial is also outstanding and super in-depth - things fighting games are known to suck at.

Every week SF gets a higher viewership than the most popular Quakecon in history, as well as in average having two international-level events every month.

Actually this weekend they have two major events going on at the same time, streamed during different times of the day, in the UK and in Japan. Both with more viewers than Quakecon 2018 and with hundreds of participants. Quake can only dream of ever having SF's esports success.

depends how you frame the question.

fighting games are still a niche genre at large, compared to the popular games MOBAs/Fortnite etc.

however it has a very dedicated playerbase with a habit for offline play rooted in arcade culture. for example, Evo 2016 had 5000+ participants for SF5 alone. that's in-person attendants from 40+ countries.

the logistics in running such a huge open bracket tournament (for multiple games even) are pretty insane.. and Evo is community-run as most fighting game tournaments.

Besides events, there is nothing going on there ...
and 2.7 k viewers right now for a capcom backed up event (capcom pro tour) is not much, less than quake prize tournaments ... remember this is street fighter, many more people know street fighter than quake, quake is only known to pc players basically ...
that being said my impression as an outsider is ... capcom is releasing sequel after sequel or special edition and players have to buy a new game at full prize and dont get a really a much different game ... in these 2d fighting games there is just not as much variation as in a 3D fps ... basically sf iv was really cool, because street fighter hasnt been really there for several years, and sf iv was an overdue release for the new console generations, but now they just cant improve anything and people just careless and they are tired of moneymaking releases :-)

Street Fighter V was released in 2016, and subsequent updates are and have been free. There is the possibility to purchase new DLC characters, however they can be also earned through in game grinding - Enough to get two/three characters is little effort.

these overall viewercounts for a game are weird on twitch, yesterday I saw 1000 viewers or something for street fighter overall, but there were only 2 streams with more than 100 viewers, a 100 viewer stream and a 200 or something and the rest all below 25 ... I dont get to see japanese streams or woot?

the fighting games viewership is event-driven. if there's no major tournament happening, the views are low in general.

it's not very appealing for many to watch someone practice combos and setups in training mode for hours or stomp random noobs online.. people want to watch tournament matches with something at stake.

the Japanese do stream, but at odd hours.. also the language barrier is hard to cross.

Viewers gather usually around events, capcom pro tour and evo but usually apart from a few players viewcount is low.

Though it was intended that noobs play it all day long through they casualizing the mechanics as much as they could. But that leads to that everybody can do everything. When i played only in the lowest level there where people which could not do everything. This was the entry welcome level. Just right on the next level everybody could do every special move and combo abd everybody basically played their character the right way. To get better the is a question of details.
