Yes that previous research was pointed to in my post, "I made a video from all the archival material." It's exciting to see the controller in action, resparked my interest in playing Quake with a Panther XL, or even just a trackball instead of a mouse. "F'en mousers," (sung to the tune of "Desperado,") is a song in the video by a member of the Panther XL clan A3D.

I have heard from comments on Reddit thaf it was intuitive once you get past the mental confusion of using left hand for free look, and right hand for forward, backward and strafing. So other than reversing the hands roles in Quake gameplay, its intuitive! Haha

Not by a competitive standard I presume, but back then, it wasn't really rare to see people playing Q1 and Build Engine games with a joy.

About the question, not really, i have one of these joystick-jet thing but never played quake on it, just freespace. But if a Dualshock 2 counts as a joystick yeah, i have played quake on a joystick and i found it awful!!
