Americas Promode Conference Playoffs (17 comments)

Three weeks ago, our brave thirty-two Americans embarked on a journey. What was the purpose of their quest? Was it to test the pulse of the arena FPS scene? Was it prove defiantly to the masses that we aren't just seventeen players playing against fifteen bots? Regardless of their motives their Foolish Legacy will not forgotten. The group stages have concluded and here are the results of their efforts. The top two players in groups advance to Division I playoffs and the bottom two players in groups proceed to Division II playoffs.

Playoffs begin now, Monday, April 2 2018 and end on Sunday, April 15 2018. Without further ado, I humbly announce our sixteen players in the Division I playoffs and our ten players in the Division II playoffs.

I also added statistics gathered from Group Stages: Check to see who had the top five total kills, total suicides, total telefrags, etc. Hope someone enjoys it =]

Missing highest total damage given/received, highest damage taken/received ratio, lowest avg damage given per frag, highest avg damage received per death, highest armor and health pickups, most accurate LG/RL/RG, etc..

Unfortunately, I would have loved to gather these as well but I didn't have the precious .txt files with the statistics that I could have easily pulled this data from into a spreadsheet.

This was extracted from end-of-game screenshots, maybe in the future I will ask for stat files for this kind of tracking.

How many people are actively playing promode? Not looking for a fight, genuinely curious. Does the new blood have anything on rat?

Depends on the region. If you sum all of the American players, European players (including Russia), you would probably have more than 30 people who actively play within a month. There are probably closer to 50-80 people who add on a once every three-months basis. Russians at one point had more than two dozens or so of people who were actively adding to their pickups within the last year or two but activity has slowed. It sorta goes up and down depending on the season, sometimes oldschoolers just pop out of the wood works. If you ever need a duel in every region we have beginners, mid-skill-low, mid-skill-high, and high skill players.

In terms of the skill today, Finnish all-star rat would simply not be able to compete. The level of mechanical skill aim/movement/game-sense is so high that really of the "old" players and I would hardly call him old, only Vo0 can really compete with people like gaiia and the new school Russians who dominate the aim game.

Someone who admins/mods the Discord or who has a better understanding of the statistics behind the channel might be able to give you a better gauge of the activity. Duels happen on a daily basis. There's usually a daily team game in Europe/Russia though it's not guaranteed all the time. American activity fluctuates wildly, you can get four days of 3-4 pickup games in a row and then a bit of a pause for 7 days without any.

CPMA games are not really played by hopping into a server. If you see a bunch of empty servers it's because people look for games on Discord and agree to play beforehand and when they finish they leave the server.

That's what everyone was saying the last time rat came back, in 2006 Masters Cup..."the skill curve is different these days", "today's game is more aim and movement", "he was good in a time when promode was new". You know the outcome.

That's what everyone was saying when fatal1ty tried Quake 4 too.

Rat did play in a somewhat recent tourney and didn't get that far. I'm pretty sure it was actually him, but I don't know for sure. He probably was out of shape though.

2006 is so far away from where we are today with the duel meta. I don't think Fatal1ty or rat can break the top of any game today and unlikely to since we have seen the rise of toxjq's spiritual children: i.e. Av3k and Cypher, clawz, and gaiia in CPMA. Many other names you can include in this school of ArrW and toxjq but there's no going back now and for those reasons alone this Finnish PowaHaus (powerhouse - this is map_cpm18 pun for those too clueless), rat with 195 hp 200 red armor would not be able to sustain himself in an LG or rocket battle coming out of red armor upper tele-exit on cpm3a versus a 100 hp 150 yellow armor gaiia sitting near 50 bubble.

I've yet to see someone break top 3 in cpma on brain alone. You need talent. And to paraphrase something ahxnxa said, "practice is for people with no talent."

I think it's fair to also say that the game has changed (even though the gameplay itself has not). I know that sounds contradictory but I think since internet speed/latency has improved for a lot of players since the early 2000s, plus hardware (mice and monitors, mostly) has also improved (and is cheaper) for a lot of players, the way the game used to play back in 2005-2006 is not necessarily the same it is today.

For an example, I remember the way

Vamp1re played back in 2004-2006 was pretty novel at the time. He would use LG aggressively, attacking with LG. It was unusual but it worked because he had very nice aim and usually low ping. Since then, that style dominates a lot of high level play (gaiia especially comes to mind) where LG is used as an aggressive weapon rather than a defensive weapon (like it used to be).

And when CPMA (the mod) was adopted for VQ3 tournaments (roughly same time frame, I think), it also changed the meta in similar ways. Early on, VQ3 was dominated by RL/RG. But once CPMA (mod) was adopted by ESWC and others, LG (combined with the CPMA netcode) became a top tier weapon with good aim. Players like Cypher, Av3k, and others (cue jamalz quote here) could shred opponents with aggressive LG plays.

EDIT: Back to your original point, I think the result of this has made the game more focused on mechanics than it was in the past. Maybe you're right that old school players couldn't keep up but I think they were also superior in a strategic sense. They relied more on good positioning and item control than raw aim.
