If you're scared to pay and it won't work, do what I did to play on Linux: I copied whole installation from Windows 10 and to launch I use https://github.com/syncore/qclauncher

Sure, you need a friend or a VM with newer Windows to get the files from without the Bethesda Launcher, but for you it will be one-time test if the game works at all, then you can buy the Steam version safely.

everyone was just beta testing, and the anniversary edition is the first main stable release

Officially ended in July last year, but last I heard, you could still upgrade with that Windows accessibility program.

paying £10 -> $20 is better then putting up with all the typical windows hassles and torrent crap and 8 more years of more rubbish

you don't even have to upgrade. just use a W7 or W8 key when installing W10.
