The number of players Valve has is not comparable to the number of quake players.

Quake hasn't been in the top of esports in terms of the number of players, events and cash prizes since Quake3. Nowadays it"s games like Dota, CS, LoL, OW etc. that dominate the esport scene.

They need to try something modern and new that could appeal to the masses and they're doing that now with Quake Champions.

Quake3 / QuakeLive are most likely my favourite games, and unfortunately I don't ever see them ever being at the top of eSport again whatever you're doing, even what you're suggesting: "keep the core, add features, better infrastructure and listen to the community".

We'll have to see how QC goes, but so far it has managed to gather players from all previous quakes into 1 game, bring a lot of pros that we hadn't seen on quake for a few years back to activity or at least back from other games, and overall try to add new concepts to appeal to new players meaning that we have new players from other games playing it and even trying to compete in it.

So far I've met players from Overwatch, Dirty Bomb, ET and Starcraft on QC already who even though they knew about previous quake games or might have tried them, had never really played a lot of quake. And the game hasn't even been released yet.

I don't like the new medal of honor games since Medal of Honor Allied Assault that was released on pc in 2002 and I used to love MoHAA. It's easier to get into because the franchise is recognized worldwide and because of its features and playerbase. That gets us back to quality and building up, because it doesn't happen overnight. People didn't miraculously start playing cs just because it's cs, there's 17 years of support and development involved.
Quake is only labelled hardcore because noobs got immidiately obliterated for years. Quake games have obviously a bigger skill gap than cs, then again if you need another analogy, how about cs noobs got matched against avarage or high level teams? It would be the very same.
Quake is a more accessible game in its principle, you shoot anything that moves, there are no bomb sites, buying or cooperation involved during your first games. Strafe jumping and item control are perfect for prolonging the gameplay, but they arent mandatory for people to have fun.
And I'm not even going into the insane variety of modes you could provide for all skill levels.

Csgo and 1.6 have the same core and the same gameplay. The differences (pre-firing, movement inertia, nade physics, eco rebalances) are minor. You don't have abilities, you don't mine minerals.

QC is losing viewers, when I checked during the final qualies, EU duel had about 4k viewers, NA ~1.8k. That's pretty shit for a f2p game that anyone can play which has a 1mill tournament coming up soon. Things might change, but so far it's been a huge ql deja vu, aka no systematic work and nonsensical decisions.
Anyway I can't imagine a proper Quake sequel doing any worse.

Yep. It's funny seeing some of these cats that were so sure that the retarded shit being done with QC is what quake needs to be successful. It's funny to see them backpedal and come up with excuse after excuse as to why QC is failing.

But yet, they're so quick to throw qlive under the bus as if it were some high budget, AAA title developed on a new, cutting edge engine that failed. The way I see it, as horrible of a job as they did with qlive, it still managed for a period of time to make enough money to sustain itself. To me, that says if they actually got some talented or even competent people to work on a proper quake title, did some actual advertising for it, they could actually make some money.

I can't see them putting out this kind of money for tourneys over the next few years. I also can't see them getting enough sponsors to invest this much money into it. I give it 2 more years max.

Considering the weapon balance in QC, the loadout doesn't matter as much as it did spawning with a shotgun in quakelive.

Making the items easier to time isn't "dogshit", it just means you don't have to be doing fucking maths in your head while trying to enjoy a game. You will never get mass appeal to a game that requires you to mentally make maths calculations and remember the results of those calculations while focusing on the other aspects of the game.

I can see why some purists might like it and find it "hardcore", but it could just as much be considered nerdy and unnecessary.

Aiming with a mouse is how the majority of players want to differentiate themselves and compete against each other in an FPS environment as well as movement and tactics.

Timing items by doing some head maths while playing an FPS is only enjoyed by a minority of nerds, as proved by the number of players who play within those games modes and actually do enjoy it.

Even some of the pro duel players admit that while timing is part of the game it definitely is not fun nor a must to make the game skillful.

Timing is how the majority of quakers differentiate themselves from lolCS plebs and cauliflower schwarzeneggers.

But it's kinda baffling how you are trying to defend this QC crap against TWENTY-ONE years of core-established Quake-tradition. It's kinda cute, but I won't ever be that desperate. : D

21 years of core-established quake tradition that has led to a dead game scene where the most played gametypes are CA and FFA.

Literally no FPS with item timing and customizable cfg has been popular for at least 15 years.

All games are still being played around the world daily, no matter what they are and how old they are.

If you think a dozen players playing QW, Q2, or Q4 at the same time today is a solid indicator, please think again.

You complain when they're trying to make some money by asking for people to buy the early access pack and at the same time you complain about QL's development which was slow because the game was free to play.

You're asking for things which are't compatible. No game that is completely free will ever have a huge team of developers constantly releasing updates at small intervals for prolonged period of time.

Why can you only find CA matches in QL do you think? Because the majority of people don't want to time fucking items, something which again is what a lot of people here on esreality are asking for.

Quake died because franchises need to reinvent themselves, and for most people Quake got stuck or died in 1999's Quake 3, as Quake 4 and Quake Live did very badly.

For example SC was immensily popular back in the day, but SC2's initial success was instrumental in people not forgetting about the franchise. Without SC2 then SC the brand would have become a niche, that last week's remaster wouldn't have been able to revive. Q4 and QL did awfully, so for the vast majority of people Quake hasn't gotten a sequel or update since 1999, so people forgot about Quake.

Somebody could list the specific reasons why Q4 and QL failed, but ultimately that doesn't matter. What does matter is the effect those failures had in the community. Well and they are old news by now, as QL is 10 years old.

There's many huge F2P games that receive constant updates and that have done incredibly well financially, for example the most popular videogame of all time, League of Legends, and the most popular on Steam, Dota 2. LoL is a great example that contradicts your point, since it coincidentally was developed and released at the same times as QL, it's F2P (properly so -- don't need to spend a penny to have everything) and received many more updates than QL at the beginning (being F2P does not mean a lack of updates. It's the opposite as the hook is to constantly get new content to purchase). Despite starting out as a no-name brand now it's more popular than any Super Mario or Pokemon ever released, whereas Quake died.

When people refer to the term "Free to Play" they mean it's free to start playing but that there will be microtransactions, that fund the game. No F2P game is completely free. Microtransactions could be to access to content (champions), optional visuals (skins) or a mix of both. At release date QC is going to be a F2P game, with the latter model.

What people criticize is id decided to temporarily charge new players for the game in the most popular distribution site (Steam), coincidentally in the same week as the 1m Quakecon, the only online advertisement the game will get for a while. For a game that badly needs players and coverage right now, we are seeing that as suicide.

For example on another thread I asked you something, that you didn't answer. How can you be so hopeful of QC's future, when as of today there have been zero events announced and zero other companies are believing in Quake? Even QL had more exposure at the beginning than QC, and that's saying something.

Try playing QC in the NA servers so you can see for yourself how long it takes to find a match, of anything other than duel (duel works fine). I understand you play on EU servers, but as a community we can't forget where the vast majority of online payments, subscriptions and microtransactions in the world come from, which is from NA. If the game doesn't work well in NA -due to lack of players- then the game is doomed. The only exceptions to this rule have been very much local games that focus on specific countries or regions (Korea, Russia, Asia), but that's not the case with QC.

Many of us say QL is dead because the only thing left in that game is the warmup mode in pub servers. CA is not Quake.

The only thing I added was that to some of us Quake was not only about the gameplay (gameplay that died with QL) but also about the social experience, of meeting hundreds of new players, competing, going to events, trying out different community made mods and maps. That aspect was lost when Quake 4 was released, which is when the "scene" shrunk so much all that was lost and Quake became a niche, to the point it was like playing a different game from then on. At that point classic Quake died, and never recovered.

Even if Quake 1 or 2 got remastered along the way still it wouldn't be remotely similar, because community activity was a major factor on how much fun they were. For example SCBW was remastered last week, but players are rejoicing that fact not because the graphics are nicer, but because people started playing again. The game was revitalized by getting players. Sadly that cannot happen to Quake since the franchise has been dead for way too long.

I understand by 2005 the best days of Quake had long passed, but I mentioned Quake 4 as the milestone because it's what failed to make Quake be relevant again. Actually Q3 was still active while Q4 was around, being much more popular than Q4 and overall still had that "alive" vibe, but Q4's failure made the franchise die. And so Quake 4 killed classic Quake, while QL dealt the finishing blow.

So what would you like them to do?

The day Quake died was when there was no worthy successor to q3. Raven couldn't live up to the hype. Game got fixed (q4) when most attention was gone. Q3 reboot didn't take off as it should due to marketing and queue mistakes. Game was not newb friendly and didn't offer the modern ladder and/or competitive features to keep things interested for low attention span crowd. Lack of match making made people get butchered without mercy.

Same pattern all the time; Inadequate product gets released > devs too stubborn/slow to listen to community; people leaving the qvuak; history repeats itself.

quake was never even alive for me tbh. I joined in like 2012 so thats very late considering when the game came out. It was REALLY hard to stay overall. Would I have not met 2-3 nice people who kept me in the game at the time, I would have probably quit very early. People in this game cant shut their whore-mouthes and constantly have to ego trip on others, while they never even achieved a thing... not even half decent elo.

keeping my feet in this game felt like trying to stay in a kindergarden full of misbehaving children, but without pay. the first few months were actual horror.. constantly getting kicked for being too bad, and if not that i was flamed until I quit cause it annoyed the piss out of me at some point. Quakers should NEVER question why there game died. you ego-asshats are the reason new people barely make it past the 5 hour mark in this game. rarely the game itself is the reason for it to be that way. After I became "good" I've seen tons of people flame/rage/votekick new people over and over again until I haven't seen them again.

So yeah... the day Quake died for me? The day I joined probably. But it was the only competitive shooter around that really took my intrest. But the community is some self centered hell-place that's doomed. Plenty of idiots that are like some religious sect who are happy as long as they have a handful of equally stupid people who just blindly agree with their opinion. I'm ashamed and its true. But iirc quake server have always had a bit of hostility. I can remember being kicked off ra2 server many times. I was angry about and was only 12 y/o so who knows what kind of shit came out of my typing mouth. Not much has changed under the sun.

Unfortunately you're very right and I've seen it first hand. Luckily I'm a bit tough minded and it takes a lot to put me off something, but I can see how many players who try to get into it would get turned off by those things.

I even tried to bring some players from other relatively fast paced shooters like ET and Dirty Bomb, etc. into quake and this is pretty much what happened to them. Callvote kick for not being good enough or not playing how it's supposed to be played, especially in team modes like TDM, CTF or CA, being insulted and trolled etc.

The lack of a proper tier system where players are matched by skilled level is also a big factor. How are you supposed to compete with people who have 5, 10, 15 or sometimes nearly 20 years of experience in quake when you're new to it?

At least it seems QC is somewhat trying to address that.

Just checked your qlstats, you played TWO pickups in the last 13 months - and that 2 TDM games overall (since Steam-migration, at least).

You may have been mildly flamed (or it might have been a general feel of discontent in the air), because the starting glicko is 1337 and that's usually a bit high for newcomers (many times even 2-400! higher than it should be), so until you play about a dozen or so games at least, the bot will 90% majorly fuck the teams up, even more so than otherwise, since it doesn't really know you.


On my part, whenever I go pickups, I feel kinda home, know or 'know' 95% of the people, the whole atmosphere is kinda like old mates around a table most of the time. There might be some fun going on on IRC, sometimes the drama, salt and potatoes or hue rampaging on CAPSLOCK, games here and there.

So no, QL TDM pickups are most definitely Quake where real ggs can happen, it's nothing like (pub)CA.

I'd advise you to get MORE familiar with your game modes and communities, before you firmly state something (or trying to be sarcastic )) ). I did it with (pub)lolCA; not 2 but 2000+ games, so it's your turn now to put some games into that TDM and see how it turns out.

First of all not everyone has the time to play 2000+ games per gametype. That doesn't make their opinion any less valid. I have like 789 QL games on my profile across all gametypes since the steam release, even though I played a lot more before the steam release. I have a full time job, a girlfriend and practice a sport on the side of gaming.

I played a lot of TDM pick-ups before the steam release. Maybe I played only 2 after the steam release I don't know, I can't remember, and I'm also pretty sure that my TDM-pickup profile and elo was reset a couple of times for not being active for a few months.

While I wasn't really the person being targeted with the flame and blame, it did happen a couple of times when I first ever tried it several years ago and I've seen it happen many times to other players who were trying to get into it, a lot of them getting put off and not really coming back. I even tried to get a few new players into TDM pickups, most of them having mostly played CA and FFA which were the only available public gametypes.

And again you admit yourself that the source of the issue is a badly made elo system and no proper matchmaking. Something they're trying to fix now in QC.

Of course when you play pickups you know 95% of the players, it's the same couple of dozen players playing it.

In public CA there is also that "flame and blame the noobs" attitude but there are also good games with real GG's. If it were the same couple of dozen players in CA just like in TDM pickups you'd also get a place where you know 95% of people and there's a more friendly vibe. You'd see it even more if the CA games were pickup games.

One of the main reason i don't play TDM pickups is because when I have time to play I want to play straight away and not queue on IRC for 20 to 30 minutes a lot of times before I can finally play a game that lasts less long than the actual queue time. It also seems that the peak hours for TDM pick-ups are times when I actually socialise outside of gaming (Friday nights and such).

The 2nd biggest reason is because I'm a social person and like to play games with people I've known for a while be it IRL or online. It's nearly impossible to get someone into TDM pick-ups if they're from other games or only played public games. The 3 biggest reasons they don't enjoy it most of the time are the queue time, the timing of items being a core part of the game, and the lack of proper matchmaking meaning that you get absolutely raped when you play and most likely made fun of and/or flamed. And I'm talking about players who were pretty good on other competitive FPS like Enemy Territory, Dirty Bomb, Team Fortress 2, CS:GO etc..

Yes the QL TDM pickup games are quality and I do enjoy them, but for me the queue time and inability to play with my real friends is a put-off unfortunately.

Now in QC I'm meeting new people while also playing with people I've known from other games like QL, DB, CS:GO etc.

You say CA isn't quake, and yet it's the most played gametype on QL at any time of day or night. Maybe that should tell you something about what the majority of players of today find fun?

Even Dirty Bomb which is a relatively obscure free to play game released 2 and a half years ago and which is actually quite complex has an average number of connected players of 2,000 with peaks of 4,000. The main reasons are because there are proper tutorials to teach new players how to play, there are proper public servers split by player level: you have servers for players under level 10 which you cannot join if you are level'd 10 or above meaning noobs can play together while getting used to the game, there are minimum level 10 servers which you have to be at least level 10 or more to access so that you don't end up with complete noobs in your team, then there are minium level 20 servers which again mean that you get even higher skilled games, etc. And that's for public servers. On the side of that you have pickups / pugs, and a competitive / ranked feature within the game. The only reasons it's not doing as great as it could is because it's a free to play game so a lack of funding meaning that the release of new updates and maps takes longer than it should, and it also lacks proper marketing and high level tournaments with prize money to get more brand awareness and higher numbers of new players.

All of the above points from my previous paragraph about Dirty Bomb are being addressed in QC, hence why I have hope and I'm positive about its future.

true. When I was still fairly bad I tried to play tdm pickup on irc. since I used to use irc for other games such as cod2, before I came over to quake. Wow did I get a shitfest right in my face in like all of these games. And too, when I was better I was barely ever whined at (only by some 2300+ tdmpickup players who cant make it into pro teams cause theyre still bad af). But those new'ish players trying tdm pickup? they got steamrolled in chat.

I remember first time when I tried to get into quake was around q4 'heyday' - I bought it but figured out quickly there are no pub games, so I tried polish osp ca servers

they were all 10 vs 10 fuckfests but I had a lot of fun, and for a few months I stayed there I wasnt kicked out even once, on other hand all the people were pretty chill 25-30 yo's (and I had my arse kicked accordingly to what you expect - I was propably the only newcomer I have seen at that time)

meanwhile QL CA people looked more like any blizzard game 'community', so yeah not hard to imagine your experience was quite opposite

I actually do enjoy it and I don't see how it's killing quake. Bringing something fresh into the game doesn't mean it's killing it.

Duel might be different to what it used to be, however you still have TDM.

Also suggestions and feedback can be given to improve the game and with the recent patches and updates the game is now getting better.

I really didn't enjoy QC during the closed beta and it really put me off. I didn't play it for several weeks but since I tried again a few days ago it's much better, sacrifice is actually a lot of fun and requires a lot of quick thinking, coordination, skill and strategy when played properly.

Quake is coming back to life with QC. Just look at all the pro players back into the game and playing it seriously.

We have Cypher, Cooller, Toxic, Stermy, 2GD, Rapha, Dahang, Evil, Av3k, Vo0, Agent and the list goes on all back in the game and playing both in duel and team.

QC also manages to gather players from several previous quake games, we have some Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, and QL players all in one game. Even in the world tournament you see players like Gaiia from CPMA, and some other known players from QW and Q2.

There are also a lot of new players from other games not just on the public servers but even some trying to compete in the world tournament. I've already met players from Dirty Bomb, Starcraft, Overwatch etc. in the game and they're enjoying it and doing fine.

And the game hasn't even officially been released yet with proper marketing.

All pro players go where the money is, that's not a mystery as it's their jobs. Hence why most of them moved to Overwatch or got actual jobs when there was no money left in quake. Tell me something I don't already know.

At the same time, they could easily go to games like CS, LoL or Dota if they were only after the money regardless of what the games are like.

Most of those pro players having a go in this tournament will not earn a single dollar as there can only be a select few who finish in the top seats. You might as well be gambling.

Very few people excel at everything, making a living in esports requires huge feats like to either win half the majors (OW) or one of a game where people have decades more experience (Dota), and people make choices and have different talents so time/talent makes it difficult.

Demanding them to go to Dota would be like criticizing you for not working being a Wall Street billionaire, instead of whatever your moneymaker is.

The only Quake world champion that has had constant success in other games (so not only winning its first tournament under dubious circumstances) is winz, and he's still a pro in Overwatch. He is likely making more money than what rapha is going to get for winning Quakecon 2017, so he isn't going pro at QC. Well and lakerman (I think it was him?), that moved to Poker so doesn't need Quake either.

They came here for the money, not because they like Quake.

Quake was always available, but during 2013 to 2016 all the guys that came back played for like at most 10 days total. Reason is there was no money in it (for anybody not named rapha).

Most of them have been playing quake for over 15 years and were still playing when there was nearly no tournaments or cash prize left in QL.

But yeah they obviously don't like Quake, they've been playing quake for so many hours through so many years because Quake = $$$$ and a way to get rich.

Plus you have read the community perceives this tournament as a competitive Quake revival. The reason for that is most of the players that qualified to 2017's event just had stopped playing Quake, coming back this year.

They let the game die by not nerfing some OP mercs enough and not releasing any new maps for over a year. It seems to be back on track now but maybe a bit too late. I played a lot of it but then gave up on it when the competitive scene was only a few pugs and some very rare cups.

It came way too late. Should have happened within a year after the first release of the launcher.

Competitively I guess when it got down to basically only 1 LAN/year (qcon), which wasn't enough to keep all the good players playing as much anymore. I don't really remember the timeline of all this though. But for me, competitively it kinda died some time after dreamhack pulled the life support plug. And when faceit dropped their online league I think that kinda put the nail in the coffin.

Don't get me wrong online cups and leagues are fun and kinda kept it "alive" for long as an esport title, but watching evil dunk everyone every week and cypher somtimes showing up to show everyone whos the boss with no 'end game' (LAN) in sight doesn't get as exciting. Like it's still fun to watch but it's the same every week so eventually I'd just watch it once a month or just the final and then even less as time went on. No LANs = no fun.

But for casual play it has never died imo, still people playing and people will probably play all versions of quake for many years to come.

Since then, TF2 and its clones are the fastest paced FPS you'll get for mass consumption, when the average monitor is nowadays 60Hz with input lag.

In retrospect when nearly all of the servers became split by ELO it really fractured the community and due to the lack of active players it really just killed the game off for a lot of people. Having to choose between playing the same exact people over and over again or not play at all. I mean it kind of protected some noobs from getting their asses kicked but at the expense of the games life. Long gone are the days of servers packed with spectators waiting their turn to get in and play.
