just saying, I am an avid bicycle rider, and I also ride on the road ... but I minimize the danger by riding mostly on streets that are not used much ... as motorbike rider you have much higher speeds and you tend to ride on roads with a lot of traffic, also in cities, etc. ... anyway danger is always there ... but statistically seen the danger is not as big ... still it is good to keep in mind you are not invulnerable

Rode a MT-07, it's a joy but honestly aren't you into more... uh sporty rides?

MT-07 Suspension is "wonky" as in, it doesn't seem precise, I'm sure you can fine tune it if you're a wizard but I tend to stay away from tinkering with parts that might kill me.

Especially in wet conditions I didn't feel safe at all.

As a commuter bike it's great, very affordable, nice low rev grunt. high speeds and you will encounter wobbling. Maybe I'm mixing it up with mt-09 Tracer :L

It is indeed a MT-09 issue and not MT-07.


If you're looking for cheap thrills, why not buy a used Japanese bike? ~2005-2012 parts are in abundance, maintenance shouldn't cost you too much if you take good care of the chain/sprocket.

The weather is also a huge factor in whether its worth buying one sadly. But yeah you're right a cheaper Japanese bike would probably fit the bill better as it will be more of a toy if I get one, I've just been looking at a lot of 'naked' bikes recently and that yamaha looks amazing and really good reviews.

But then again it would be the first bike so maybe something alot cheaper and less cc to start with.

I'd go with "cheap jap" if you're going to get a car and only use it occasionally. It's really not worth spending a double digit amount for something that is used once in two weeks IF the weather/free time allows you to. You said you haven't been riding anything for a few years so trust me on this one - anything that has two wheels and at least 70HP will make you happy. Everything else is a bonus.

For getting a license and learning to ride, it's safer and cheaper to first go for a used 125cc bike, then sell it and move on.

Buy a good new helmet, as they expire. Do wear gloves. Practice, practice, practice.

I think 125ccs don't have a big resell value, not sure about your market but I'd recommend getting a "beginner" bike around 300-650ccm

When I was in the market for an A2 legal bike there really weren't many options available, now the market is saturated with 300cc/500cc bikes from major companies.

The 125cc is like riding a pimped up scooter - struggles uphill, top speed doesn't give any rush of adrenaline. They're usually much, much smaller and if you're a fully grown adult you look silly on a 125.

There's a market for learners' bikes. The idea is getting an already used cheap 125cc bike, use it for three months to learn and get the license, and lose $100 in the process. Many people do that.

That's way better than suggesting a brand new bike to someone that might not even like riding much once he tries it, and to someone very likely to drop and mildly damage the bike. For what is going to be his learning bike, something replaceable, in resale value that's a $1000 mistake.

Plus, it's way easier and safer as a noob to start with the easiest one out there, that isn't a scooter. Older (30+) people die on their first bike because they thought they could handle a liter bike and didn't want to take incremental steps, despite not having driven any bike once. I'm suggesting him the opposite, to ensure nothing will happen at the time he is most likely to make mistakes.

So, I say he should go for something from India first, trash it like the trash it is, and once he is ready then go for a Ninja 300.

get your license and just ride. Don't ride by anyone else's pace but yours, enjoying your ride beats being "first", ride so you feel both safe/excited, ride so you get to know your bike's quirks and you'll be there before you know it. It's not about time spent, it's how you spend it I guess.

But if you want numbers, should take you around a year with to get used to your first bike without prior experience and another ~6 months or so to be really comfortable around the bends.
