So far Quake has never gone that route, I don't see why they would change that. It's not like they're going to try and compete with CoD and CS. They're the best at what they do so they'll stick to that gameplay.

Where did they say it's classed based game ? All I saw was that the characters had some special abilities, but that is not what makes a "class" in my opinion. Class is more that you can only use this or that weapon. If all characters have one special ability, some kind of powerup in a way that could add more depth and strategy to a match, but all have all weapons to grab, same base speed and movements, I don't think it's going to be a class game and if that's the case they might very much stay pretty "true" to the Quake spirit compared to games like TF2, Overwatch, etc.

It doesn't matter to me if they can still pick up every weapon if they have a single unique ability that makes them a class with that ability vs a class with some other unique ability.

If there's more than on me unique state or ability per class/character then that's just more deeply entrenching the differences and complicating balance.

ID software upper management must be on crack, they let external company develop DOOM multiplayer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certain_Affinity Halo MP developers and guess what? It feels exactly like cheap Halo knockoff with DOOM skins.

It proofs that ID software does not have any personel left that really get what people want to play.. Im all up for Team based Quake game but I really dont think Saber Interactive have enough talent to pull it off. Its going to be another team based Halo game with Quake skins and logo.

I wll be the first to say it:

maybe class based is not such a bad idea if done right. I play my own class already, the less meleeLG more DistanceRG class. Let people specialise in what they are good at and we have a variety of styles. nowadays you are either all aim or you are rapha. Give th defraggers a class that can use their skills to the fullest etc etc.

Im open for it, I also played TF2 for years so its not an unfamiliar concept to me. Important is to gve the major weapons to everyone otherwise it would be crap.

I agree. There is a chance that it might turn out to be good. Not a fan of an idea but maybe they will surprise us. Having good player choosing models with abilities based on their style would be pretty cool as long as they are balanced. I just hope those abilities wont be game changing because seeing Vison using wall hack already scared me. Thats stupid idea. I think would be pretty cool to see one model with double jump for example which allows him on some map jump straight to ra without taking rj / walk around. One with some fast forward dash with 10sec cd. One with some better starting weapon etc.

In q3/ql you can use whatever techniques and methods you want, to "make" your own class and play it.

In that quakefortress you will pick one of pre-made classes, balanced around "minimum skill, maximum random" ideology that tries to eliminate any difference between people who have been playing for 10+ years and a first time player.

You have to be reaaaally optimistic to believe this game has a chance to be good.

Reflex. Some people play it, not a lot though. I love Quake, but I've got to admit that there may not be a market for that classic competitive arena shooter that we want. Reflex is really, really good and has come a long way over the course of its development. Still, I don't see a lot of people playing it. It is that modern take on classic arena shooters, it could easily be a new esports games given some more polish. Who really knows about the market though, if I had a ton of money I'd fund a badass classic arena shooter and market the crap out of it. I'll hit up Roger Clemens and see what he's up to, maybe we can get a loan from Deleware or something.

I feel really sorry for the guys behind Reflex to be honest. It is clear their game will be much closer to what this community actually wants than whatever turd id software is gonna shit out with this project here even if you despise CPM (anybody who thinks otherwise is just deluded), but rampant franchise fanboyism (especially within the actual community), the free hype that comes with the Quake name and all the other privileges of being id software & Bethesda will make sure it's not the better game that will prevail.

I find it a bit too easy to say ID Software is going to "shit out a turd" with this new quake.

I mean when have they even disappointed us with a quake game before?

Some people might say Quake 4 wasn't all that, but I would actually argue that the game was good and felt nice to play. (I'm talking strictly multiplayer as I didn't care about the single player). It also brought in new things such as crouch sliding and shooting through teleporters.

Then they realised people were still in love with quake 3 and gave us quakelive.

With today's technology and the fact they're going to focus only on multiplayer for this new game, you can only have positive hopes.

I'm sure they'll come up with something better than Reflex, and if you don't think so you really are pessimistic.

I'm a big fan of arena FPS games and apart from Quake I also really enjoyed Painkiller and Warsow and even some Xonotic.

But I find it hard to want to pay for a game like Reflex which doesn't bring anything new or different and looks and sounds very basic (I mean those flat metallic sounds really don't appeal to me).
It also has 20 times less players than quakelive right now, and its number of players has been in constant decline since December: http://steamcharts.com/app/328070
Even Warsow is more appealing and fun IMO, and it's free.

If Reflex were free things might be different, but I really don't see how that game is worth any of my money as it is.

As good as Q3/QL is, it belongs to a dated type of arena shooter that will never be a commercial success. It is a near perfect game and therefore emulating it with a more updated version will probably leave us with an inferior version. A new direction for Quake is wise and if this reboot has the same attention put into it that the single player of Doom had then we could be seeing something rather good.

Actually I'm disappointed to hear this news because I don't want to see Bethesda ruining another one of my beloved ID Software titles. We already saw how Bethesda shitted on Doom by not giving access to a proper level editor. The ability to fully mod the game is what made Doom great and last for decades. You can't do many creative things with SnapMap, which is quite bad since it is the only mode where you can play co-op. So effectively you can't even get the same amazing co-op experience you could with the older Doom titles.

However, I can't blame Bethesda for everything. No doubt that this new Quake game will never play like Q3 or the older Quake titles, because the devs are smart enough to realize that this new generation of FPS players don't want to play a game that is mechanically complex to play. If there is an complexity, people want it in character classes and stats, like what we see MOBA games or Overwatch, not in execution. That is also why I am quite sure we won't see any complex movement like bhopping or strafe jumping, because Bethesda will probably be focusing on making the gameplay on both the PC and console versions similar. Instead of trying to shoehorn in the aforementioned movement with console controls, it makes more sense to make generic movement like what we see in the current Doom title.

So yeah, I have zero expectation that this game is going to be similar or as good as the previous Quake titles.

Okay, I missed that part (which platform it is on), so it is good to hear that I am wrong on that aspect of the game. However that still doesn't give me any hope that the game's movement will be similar in complexity to what we have seen in previous Quake titles. Take forever instance Doom 4: it is basically plus forward. Compare that to Doom 2 where the game's engine had some movement tricks that you could exploit in order to move faster than normal, such as strafing against a wall at a certain angle.

I think the opposite. Zenimax is the reason why Doom 4 is by far the best single player FPS game of the year.

The success of Overwatch has proven that there is a vast market out there for this type of game, in spite of that games technical failings.

Quake stands in direct opposition to one of the largest fps games ever made, and I expect them to ship a game that far surpasses OW in almost every aspect.

Like every other arena fps player reading about class-based system made me go upset mode. But, well atleast we would have OW alternative with quake features which is basically good. Not to mention gameplay wise,but even watchin OW makes me wanna close it in 5 secs, because with all that chaos of flashes and spam on the whole screen its simply impossible to understand whats going on. Dunno if its just me..

Damn. I remember a time when [id] were the ones setting trends. Now they just follow and hop on whatever is the coolest thing currently. Almost like one of those spineless "musicians" with no integrity that just happen to always switch up genres to whichever is popular at the moment.

I guess turning QuakeLive and the Quake name in general into a steaming bag of shit wasn't good enough for them. They had to go and create a new title in the franchise to really drive the point home.

PC only: aiming / gameplay / movement does not have to be dumbed down for console controllers
120hz: imo means smoother and faster multiplayer gameplay than any other game
Strafe jumping, rocket jumping and ramp jumping are mentioned to be in the game: these are what make us say quake movement is better than any other fps
MP only: can build from the ground up for MP with no concessions for SP

Sounds promising so far - will be interested to see screenshot / gameplay

It seems they're doing the right thing. It's like I said a few weeks ago, they need to make something that looks as good as the new Doom but with a newbie friendly game-mode to keep players interested - and then a hardcore mode for the big tournaments. This is the only thing I'm hoping for, if they don't announce a classic deathmatch mode then the game won't interest the old school players - which should be something imperative for the devs.

I don't know. Abilities are generally strong in team modes, where you can either combine them, or have team mates reacting to a specific one. It's much easier to design them with this in mind. And I'm also not sure a 1on1 would really benefit from them. I'd rather have weapons that allow you to do stuff (rj etc), so that anyone can pick them up and use them.

You could be playing with all classes in one match. You move your figures around a map and can switch to any other at any time (+ cooldown). Something like playing TDM 4v4 having only one player in the team. Anyway I can't imagine this being enjoyable though.

I'm sure there are sub-communities that pay more than others. FT was a premium gametype so these folks probably paid more on average than the CA crowd. It could be the same with the few mid/high-level duel players since they wanted access to all the maps at all time as well as their own servers.
But I don't think the difference is as massive as you think it is in terms of what people paid. You may also not realize how massive the difference is in terms of population.
Would you prefer receiving $100 from one guy or $10 from a hundred?

Pretty exciting, who would have thought...

I'm very much afraid by the specialities, not really per-se, but because it doesn't belong at all in the Quake universe in my opinion (closer that we had was the Runes in CTF) so I hope they do it properly.

Also, let's hope they are going to respect what has been a fundamental part of the game for a very long time now : total console tweaking !

I hope all this class based stuff doesnt rule out duel and turn it into a composition based team game

The abilities seem pretty small scale, kind of like the stuff diabotical was planning back when that had classes so I dont think it eliminates the possibility for duel.

Maybe even a Starcraft like 1v1 scenario would be possible with just 3 of the champions being available for duel and being balanced around each other

New multiplayer-centric Quake is quite possible, but I think it will be rather different to what ESR demographic expects.

Ironically, I think decision makers at id are now faced with a hard dilemma. If they make the new Quake as Q3 reboot with better visuals, they're risking not getting enough newcomers to make it sustainable in the long run and therefore commercially feasible. If they make it as a new multiplayer experience with Quake franchise on top (let's say Overwatch-inspired class-based FFA-centric shooter), they're risking to get a huge backlash from old school fans.

They're basically between sledge and hammer at the moment, so I'm quite curious what they'll come up with. May be entirely new IP?

Its not entirely true. Look at cs for example. It is indeed hard game too to master. And yet theres millions of player playing it and trying to get better at it every day even though game has like what, 20 years already? Same story as quake. difference is their marketing sucks, and they did literally nothing to keep players on quake. No proper matchmakings, some league/ranks, skins other stuff and you will get tons of people. I had few friend trying to play quake and learn it. Guys who never played it before. After two weeks they were just tired and annoyed being beat 0-50 because they can't find proper opponent and there is nothing left to do. Only us old veterans who love the game so much can play it all the time. We need good marketing and id should make it quake live like with some additions. I hope for the best

I doubt they will release Quake Champions only on PC
The console market has been a growing strength and Saber Interactive worked primarily on xbox games.
Also since crossplatform has been released earlier this year between all 3 major platforms (PC, XB1, PS4) it is highly unlikely that they will skip the console marked.
However if they do, good for the modding community unless they allow modding on consoles which I doubt tbh
Only time will tell

Why is everybody calling this Quake 5?

From what i've seen so far, it's not. Its Quake Champions, its a different title. And for me its a clear sign that it will be a side game to the series, like it was with the Quake Wars. (Ts-ssss, its a secret way not to take personal any clusterfuck they might going to convert quake series into).

It seems that ID just want to quickly grab a piece of competitive FPS market, revitalized by Blizzard plus DOOM 4 was a success as a single player which gave ID the possibility to continue futher their old titles. I'm trying not to have any expectations at all, because Bethesda is everything but a developer of innovative competitive modern esport games - they're fabricating AAA single-players games for casuals, that's what they are. It wouldnt be even close to Overwatch in terms of how polished and worked through the game is going to be.

There is only one hope for us: After DOOM 4 multi-player ID should have learned that hiring a side company to develop the vital part of the game ends up into bloody disaster.

Fuck, if only ID could make everything right. Not extraordinary, not exceptional, just right. Then with the modern possibilities Quake would rise in its full height. And with its core benefits - the Quake brutality, the Quake pace and the Quake skill ceiling alongside with the unique Quake movement it would chew fucking Oversasquatch alive.

By the way, if you paid attention, the new quake would be promoted as just Quake. The name of the official site is "Quake.com".

Its just to make things simpler for the wider audience, guess, nobody wants to play the 9th part of the game if the haven't played the previous 8 parts.

I agree in the sense that nobody deserves having to play this new game.

I also agree that some serious amount of faith is required to think that anything good will come out of this project. As we all know, faith is an irrational belief in a position for which there is no evidence, or even evidence for the contrary. Well, there's plenty of the latter in this case here, just look at Quake Live or the multiplayer for the new doom. Was literally designed by Halo developers. And jeez, Sync is already confirmed to have a managerial position for this new title.

Pick one. Class-based gameplay has existed for decades since the first QWTF mod.

Here's the truth: This game will be promoted by autist Youtubers for a couple of videos, the game will start becoming irrelevant soon after as they see the videos don't generate any views compared to other alternatives.
I expect a shorter lifespan than Q4, probably around the same as Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. id tried to appeal to pleb herd before with that game by trying to get Battlefield players playing, remember how that went?, now they are trying the same to jump on the Overshit fad, guess how it's going to go.

The final redpill is: Quake is hardcore, with no gimmicks, and will never appeal to the increasingly dumber generations. We live in a world where if something doesn't get Youtube views, it's dead. Look at Doom 4's MP. All those 30 something year old Youtuber autists that live with their parents and have millions of followers, make a couple of videos when the game comes out because they get paid to do so, and now it's already yet another vanishing game.

The era of good videogames it's over, you can't reinvent the wheel, the fundamentals are set in stone, you can only dumb down and add annoying gimmicks (such as different movement for each character and limiting amount of weapons you can carry because muh classes). Oh wait, that was already done by a bunch of modders for free in 1997.

Stop coping, it's over.

look, its QuakeWatch ! :P

I have been a quake player for some 15 years, duel is one of the reaons that kept me interested in such a long time . Individual hardcore skill , no classes .

However i am currently enjoying Overwatch , but i will not enjoy it for such a lenghty amount of time.

This game better have a duel mode in there somewhere, promote teamplay , i get it , its fine, no problem , go 4 it .

But keep that duel in there, because that is what has DEFINED quake for so many years . Aswell as bunnyhoping.

And hey, i even enjoy FFA , its the brainless dont care , listen to music , quit of the middle of game because have to make dinner mode, and it works great for that.

lol, i think i found the optimist! Given the reception Doom multiplayer got compared to the single player i think id knows the direction to take.

I'm hopeful for a modernized Quake 3 (character classes etc. whatever they decide), but with classic modes and maps there for the old school players. There are plenty of proven maps and game modes for them to just copy/paste, and considering it is already a AAA quality engine they can focus wholly on the game play.

Fingers crossed!

In my dreams it has a Capturestrike clone mode. I actually think that it is a very accessible game mode. Rounds are usually short, and while you are out you can learn from other players. I just needs the polish and physics of the original mod. The QL version is a half-hearted attempt.

While there are positive signs, and it seems highly preferable to other new games, I see the class stuff as highly worrisome. It sounds like they're trying to cover up their weaknesses rather than showing off their strengths.

Do you guys really expect other gamers to fall in love with Quake because a bit like Overwatch? They won't fucking care, they don't want strafing in their ability-based games.

I used to be worried that the fundemental concept of old-school deathmatch games was too hardcore. Now I just think the implementation, clients and marketing are. Unfortunately, the devs aren't willing to believe that.

DAMN. i quit quake live ages ago because i was just useless at it but this looks so good i might just have to get a pc for it (i'm looking to get a mac next tbh...*waits to be curbstomped*). either that or a ps4 for tekken 7. hmmmmm.

i'm half and half with respect to the abilities thing. i think it will all cancel out like in wow arenas where some class combinations will auto win against others which i can't decide whether or not it's a good thing or a bad thing. should be worth a shot though.

It actually is not hard to make:
- ability based team deathmatch
- team deathmatch
- ffa (with or without abilities)
- duel
- ca (with or without abilities)
- ctf (with or without abilities)

abilities should just be a votable option, problem solved, quake saved !!

We don't know yet if the abilities are the only thing differentiating the characters.

Personally i doubt it. Tim Willits even mentioned he preferred the "Nyx" character because it can "move fast and rocket jump high" -> possibly different movement speed/system per character.

The characters are different sized -> maybe different hitbox sizes, different HP amounts etc.

Combining a proper duel mode with abilities isn't out of the question. I've been brainstorming on discord and we came up with a lot of solutions that can all make it still a great playable competitive mode.

There are some big if's but for example, of all the abilities we saw (ranger's throwing teleporter, nyx's phasing, scalebearer's truck rush(?) and visor's wallhack) the most worrysome so far is visor's wh. But then again it's okish if you imagine it'd only last for a couple of seconds at maximum.

You can imagine that only a few characters would be playable for duel mode. Or you could imagine a pre-duel banning step where you can just drop the overpowered ability classes. Or as some have said completely remove abilities for duel mode but that's unlikely imo (but why not).

What we can tell from the cinematic trailer and Tim's interview is that weapons can be pickedup so they're not class based. Every character should be able to do all the movements (rocketjumping/strafejumping). During the interview he says that Nyx can rocketjump superhigh but as someone said, maybe that's just because she can phase upwards after rocketjumping ? Who knows at this point.

I think with all these hints you can't say abilities would be gamebreaking for the oldschool fans. There are many work arounds that'd make the game playable and still satisfy the hardcore arena shooters fans of this community.

Imagine a duel mode and you can only use your champion's ability a certain amount of time per map played. That could make for some sick moves to get out of desperate situations or get an unlikely last-second frag to tie the game up. Could make for epic stream+commentary and what not. Anything's possible really. Wouldnt that be awesum tho ? Last second ranger teleporter throw into sick rocket+rail flick into the back of an adversary to get into overtime. Please give it.

I have hope.

The logical solution would be to have a special pickable resource - let's say energy bubbles, that would could be used to activate those abilities. This way we wouldn't need health bubbles, since self-healing could be just a regular ability that differs from champ to champ in terms of rate, amount, cooldown, etc.

For team modes I think this would be a great idea in a modern context, look at how well Overwatch is doing, imagine that but with CTF or TDM with quake physics..

how does a throwing teleporter breaks the game we love ? The main mechanics would still be there. Weapons pickup, health pickup, armor pickup, quake guns, strafejumping, rocket jumping...

We won't go around having abilities but they don't have to be as game breaking as the abilities you see in OW.

That's the problem with Quake, you know. While I agree 100% - that isn't what is popular any more in gaming. Seeing how different the top pro players are in a game, when everyone is on an even playing field was one of the great things about Q3/QL. It's what made watching people like av3k, cooller, cypher, rapha etc play each other so interesting and exciting.

A class based system still has the ability to do the same, just not with the same amount of freedom and creativity, if implemented very intelligently, but it will be like walking a tight rope trying to get it right. Making certain abilities not too overpowered, and others underpowered, when you have 10-15 different classes in the game makes it very difficult to create a level playing field in a true competitive environment. What usually ends up happening is a certain handful of classes will always get picked in competitive tournaments because they are the best at the time, pending nerfs etc.

The most important challenge for this new Quake game is going to be how they walk the tight rope when it comes to creating a big enough skill ceiling to make esports meaningful but also creating a fun and exciting experience for new players and casual players. If they make the skill ceiling as high as Q3/QL and let everyone queue up for non-ranked matchmaking it will be a bloodbath and many ragequits for new players, but if they skill compress the game too much it will lose its integrity in the esports scene and while it might have success in the first 12-18 months it won't have the longevity we have seen in Q3/QL.

It's going to be very difficult to get Quake: Champions right. Throwing all my negativity aside from the past 16 years from being a hardcore Quake fan, I really do hope they get it right and the game is successful and has longevity.

The problem with Quake might be a problem of not releasing a half-decent Quake in 16 years. Yes, it's daring to try to attempt an oldschool Quake, but you should risk it if that's your legacy IMO.

[edit: I'd note that having a low skill ceiling still dampens the esports experience, but nobody wants to talk about it, so it's not that relevant for the success of an esports game apparently. Not if the game is very popular among casuals.]

Anyway, I think matchmaking solves these issues for the most part. And if they think matchmaking isn't neccessary or too hard to do (as they did with QL, FUCK YOU QL DEVS! remember, the same people are working on Champions), well then let them burn. But if they do matchmaking, then these issues aren't really issues. Most of the effects of getting beaten by a better player are still in other games, and they solve it through matchmaking.

With a high enough playerbase anyone could have enjoyed even Quake Live. Problem is when there's only a few thousand players playing it, you're bound to get raped 24/7 when starting it and will eventually just ragequit off it to play LoL with other bronze people instead.

Duel is not played by more than 500 people in the world, across all FPS games. The majority of those are in F2P or formerly F2P games.

If the developer correctly focuses on only one team based gametype, as they should, then duel shouldn't be in the game.

Really, duel is a niche within a niche. Outside ESR no one knows who cypher from Belarus is.

Quake has become a niche, do you think it is because the duel mode was pushed rather than the other modes ? That's right, without the duel scene and appeal to the viewers, Quake would've been in a much worse situation than it's been in.

You'd be straight out lying if you said the opposite. Duel has carried quake to tournaments for all those years until eventually it died, but tdm and ctf had died much earlier.

A competitive Duel scene does have some potential to draw viewers, but a competitive team based mode has a MUCH higher ceiling in my opinion, both in how it can target players who aren't at a certain standard and viewership. The game stands to be the most financially successful if they adopt a team based approach.

Quake Live would have been in a much worse situation sure, but I think it's not a good idea to compare what was to what could be and call it the same thing. Duel will always attract the hardcore fan base but how much further can it grow, and how much room is there for competitive play? A big reason even Duel started to die off (in my opinion) is because we pretty much saw a Rapha Cypher final every single time. Then Evil came along and it got a little interesting until he would win every single cup too.

Anyway long story short I think they'd be making a mistaking financially investing into a Duel scene, assuming they do make it. And assuming they DO, can it even be competitive. (much less likely) And assuming it IS competitive, will it hold the interest of enough people for it to generate an esport scene of significant viewership or will it have to ride the coattails of a more successful TDM based version. A lot of ifs and buts :D

(You're pretty good a team based modes anyway, surprised you're not embracing it more)

Heck pretty sure I'd do much better if the competitive mode would be a team mode, but competitive duel is intense and it's easier for viewers to sympathise for one personality vs another. That's why I still hope that they will atleast implement some kind of duel ladder/league and then the future will tell which has the viewers preference. I'm also pretty sure the team mode will be where it's at but let the duellers have their fun.

How many competitive 1v1 shooters are there nowadays ? It's all about team competition (which doesn't have to be a bad thing huh, don't misinterpret :P)

You still have all the classic options still there and there's even a constant stream of indie Deathmatch games being created that all end up focussing on duel.

Yeah but isn't team modes dying of in part due to not having any big team sponsors and names? Even fnatic dropped their team. Both TDM and CTF were dropped because they are high cost to organize, arrange travel expenses, rooms, rewards.

You throw 10000 moneyz at a team vs 5000 at a duel winner.

It's pure cutting losses why team modes died.

I am dueller, but I would prefer TDM focused gameplay too (and it's gonna be like that), becouse it's have more chance to survive and atract new kids. if anything wrong, moders, will create/edit duel gametype and near official bethseda tourneys, we will have duel not official, made by community. Yep I think so too, if they focus on duel as the primary scene it's sure to fail, I don't think they'll make that mistake they seem pretty confident right now. For the sake of longevity it has to be a team based mode, which isn't to say it has to be TDM in the classic duel sense, CTF and potentially other team modes could be as equally successful, although I suppose TDM is the closest thing to duel which is considered a 'pure' deathmatch mode?

I would assume in duel you might be able to force the same champion vs champion. Or we might have comps which are like heavyweight vs lightweight boxing, with either fast or slow champions etc. This seems very interesting, it would open the game up to more people.

That is an interesting idea. Perhaps different tournament types? Elimination style tournaments where each player can eliminate a certain class they know the opponent is strongest in? Kind of like MOBAs where they lock off certain champions prior to gameplay? Could even have that sort of concept for a TDM scene

I don't know if it will be purely TDM as we know it though. As fun as TDM is, it's hard to follow as a spectator point of view. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to make something more "advanced" like an offensive team vs a defensive team kind of gameplay to appeal to viewers more.

Atleast for the competitive mode they'll be trying to push that is. Still hoping we'll have the possibility to play the classic ruleset modes aka tdm, ctf and whatnot.

warpath was quite nice to play in doom. It's variable and you have to move.

no don't ask the community anything. they can't tell the difference between sand and water. they only know how to moan how the game isn't fitted to their own low skill.
Devs should make games the way they think is the best. sometimes it works sometimes it fails. take a look at doom 3. it sold very well but if they listened to the "community" you would have a game that appeals to 20 people and they would feel so special for having the skill that only they have to play it. also then they would start moaning how there aren't many players.
actually, on a second thought the community should be allowed to make a game. it would be crap and they would only have themselves to blame. but can you make stupid know stupid?

I've read regular gamer's opinions and they complain about it not having a single player campaign "like it's supposted to". For many people the last quake was q2, who'd thought so?

i've seen a cinematic so far, what can you tell about the game without seeing actual gameplay? Lawbreakers is also class based yet totalbiscuit did a good video explaining why it isn't like overwatch despite being class based. People expecting it to be like overwatch is because this game has already built a status in no time and ignorants think this is like a formula that blizzard came up with. Hell, we played class based mods and gametypes since forever.

I don't know what to expect anymore since it won't be the same company developing the game, it's a completely new team who seek to satisfy a more modern market than the people playing quake, after all, if these guys haven't switched game is because they are already playing their favourite game, sponge said it himself, whatever you give them they'll be happy cos quake.

I usually talk about the games that I play/played, this one I couldn't play it yet. However you will get a shitload of gaming theorists around here from now to game's release. You will find one thousands threads about how to make quake champions much better and more balanced without even seeing the game out. Just like happened with reborn aka diabotical... it's just that thristy feeling for a quake sequel...

the most popular mode in cpmpickup was NTF and it was class based by movement, armor and weapons loadouts.

3 main classes:

Scout: 320 ups, rampjumps, doublejumps, circlejumps, strafejumping. Aircontrol. Green armor up to 100 (?), grenades and shotgun.

fighter: 280 ups, doublejumps, circlejumps, strafejumping. Aircontrol. Yelllow armor up to 100, rocket launcher, shotgun and plasmagun.

tank: 240, circlejumps and strafejumps. Aircontrol. red armor up to 150, rocketlauncher, lightning gun and shotgun.

you had the midairs, the crazy fast paced action, the teamwork, the powerups in middle of the map that could make the whole difference in a match, this is more quake than CA if you ask me, and the best thing all around is that it was simply a gametype, the real deal was around the corner as another gametype.

because it's WAY simpler to play and it still got the bits of the whole thing, you don't get as much spawn raped for example and tdming at mid is harder. It puts the whole emphasis on running and catching the flag.

At least for me the beauty of quake is the raw skill that makes the difference (as in aim/movement, but also tactics/reading the opponent/mindgames etc.).
Anything which is not that is not quake in my book.

You're missing the point on how cpm had a mode that was easy and fun to play but still have the regular situations (in a "friendly" approach) of a normal gameplay. I saw many new players starting with ntf and eventually do well in 1v1 while if they started with duel straight away they would get discouraged at most...

i really like how you turn this conversation in a penis measurement competition tho, in any case, I am happy it isn't "quake" as you say, the gameplay evolved from mod to standalone game so now at least we can talk from one game to another instead of telling me whatever reason quake is better than any of their mods.

It's beyond me how you fundamentalists of the vanilla gameplay reject every gameplay change after what 20 years? The real beauty of quake is defrag, let's be honest here, your definition is a plain self induced blowjob as a quaker, pretty sure anyone who is good at something could describe his hobby like that; Players found exploits and bugs that allowed them to navigate thru the maps and change their position with skill required (no hero teleport or dash bullshit) and that is what made quake unique, the movement.

The funny thing is how you people think it's brainless or "too rushy", play ql against the best cs player of the world who is completely clueless about strafejumping and u will beat him easily with the aim of my grandma because he doesn't know that you can accelerate in the air, simply because you get from A to B faster.

I know this because I played cypher in reflex and his summary was "you can't do normal stuff here" when the truth is that he didn't know the chokepoints due to movement, you don't have the awareness of a guy telejumping because you simply ignore how the game can possibly allow you do such jumps... or simply because it was the 2nd time he played that map?? I'm not missing the point.

The point you're making is that having classes and shit can work fine and have good gameplay (which I agree with).
The point I made is that the type of gameplay resulting from that is not quake (at least not for the multiplayer part of all previous quakes excluding coop).

You're saying that "some mode of some mod had good gameplay", that's fine with me, but all mods tried to alter the game of quake (some of which towards competitive gaming, some of which towards more casual gaming).

due to a shitload of reasons.
Among which that the Quake series is extremely unforgiving for weaker players. If player A is even slightly better than player B then A will win 100% of the time.
In more casual games you will often have a decent chance to win even if you're average and your opponent is good. (example hearthstone)
This is nice for people who do not actually have a competitive mindset for their games but do want to compete (and sometimes win matches). Which is a very large amount of people.
The same holds for team games (cs/cod/overwatch).

But also with marketing and organization wise (lan events etc) quake was dropped a long time ago.
+ Q4 multiplayer failed miserably out of the box.
+ all the different mods splintered quake into many sub cultures. (which ID actually helped fuck up at the end of QL)
+ so many more stupid decisions...

sc doesn't have any mods/gametypes to splinter stuff.
sc also has a stable marketing and good organisational structures in place.

As for the player issue, in skill gap, yes it's largely the same. However in sc you can just guess to go for some specific preset build + attack combo and just get a decent win percentage that way.
Another thing that sc does is it pairs you quite well with people of similar skill such that you won't consistently lose all the time. (hi matchmaking)

It being quake or not does depend on gameplay. Classes ain't one of the things that will work and still be quake.
It can still be a good (or even amazingly great) game, but on the whole it won't be quake.

the hype you build around a game before it's launch it's massively important because it will be the first "image" of people will have of the game when they tried it, QL failed pretty much on it's release, queue to play exacly the same q3 with "improvements". People whined a lot about it.

The problem with these mp games it was the company itself ignoring how the game is played, now you see this willits guy saying stuff like "esport, matchmaking, 120hz, rocketjump, strafejump, aircontrol" when the truth is they always talked shit in every fucking quakecon (not saying carmack's speechs were useless it also has its place in there, they just ignored the "gaming" part). I mean it's like they just figured out what the game is meant to be at this stage when the bigger companies are doing it as well... they always had that chance in front of their noses

I've played tdm / ctf / duel an insane amount, the skills needed for players remain pretty much equal although there are slight emphasis changes. For instance in tdm movement is less of an issue and tactics is a larger issue.

I have no problem with health and armour class based, along with speed. Weapons should be the same all around yes, but trading off speed for health or damage output isn't a bad thing, also assuming things like dodge speed increase. A lot of intricacies could come out of this system that makes the game we all love even more amazing.

Is Quake Champions going to be more like LOL? There are 32 champions in Quake3. Each of them can have different health, armor, movement speed, strafe speed, damage per weapon, health regen, armor regen, etc...

Tank Jr: 200 health, 200 armor, 240u movement speed, 40u strafe speed, 120 rocket damage, 70 rail damage, 5 lg damage, etc...

Xaero: 150 health, 50 armor, 320u movement speed, 60u strafe speed, 70 rocket damage, 120 rail damage, 7 lg damage, etc...

LOL is one of the most popular games ever made. I feel if this is done well it could be pretty cool.

If only ID would promote new Quake 10 times worse that Blizzard did with OW, but still - promote it properly, QCH would be a success.

They should focus on hardcore nature of Quake, to my mind, with Quake being the protagonist of Overwatch. Easy, stupid, slow, repetitive, frivolous, cartoonish vs dark, challenging (not "complex"!), fast, brutal and punishing. My point is that two last decades simple games have been dragging tens and hundreds of millions of players into the videogames, now its the fucking time for some of them to grow a pair.

Grimrock series recieved the media coverage as hardcore old-school rpg and was sold by millions of copies. Being an indie-developed game with a 5 figures budget. The campaign for Dark Souls, which led to a huge success, was all about the challenging character of the game, with their main message as PREPARE TO DIE, should be a benchmark here.

Hardcore is the new Entartaiment.

TLDR; ID should make game more accesible\entartaining for wider audience with ladders\matchmaking and promote it better. Not making the game itself easier.

If ID would make Quake as noob friendly as OW it just wont be competitive anymore, with all these invisible giant hit-boxes around players, dumbed movement and special spam taktikz.

Absolutely agree. You can see this happening in virtual racing too. More and more people are ditching arcade racers for ones that make a serious attempt at replicating reality.

It's always been my stance that if marketed properly, Quake could be popular again.

Unfortunately instead of drawing on elements that are already present within the Quake realm/lore, they deliberately go and c&p shit features from popular (and bad) games. In some bad attempt at getting a little bite of someone else's pie.

I remember, when back in 1997 people (people = most of Quake 1 fans) were saying, that Quake 2 is not a Quake anymore, becasue "it's too sci-fi, there's no more dark Lovecraftian atmosphere anymore and it's just too colorful to be a real Quake game".
When Quake 3 was released back in 1999, people were saying the same garbage, that "it's even more colorful than Q2 and where the fuck is SP campaing. Quake as an MP game only? Lazy ass id can't even make a full game anymore".

And nowadays, when id (or rather what's left from an id) are making a new Quake game, people are saying, that's not a Quake anymore, because "there will be classes like in this shit, Overwatch. It will not be a real Quake anymore". What is funny, that many of the same people are/were playing CA gametype and in the same time they were considering it as an "Quake game". Just lol.

So now Quake has gone from Quakeworld: a very promising and respectable prototype that spawned many great players, to Quake 2: the purest form of Quake and the pinnacle of skill, to Quake 3: a massively dumbed down, commercialized cash cow with shiny graphics, to Quake 4: a promising model with the movement complexity of Quake 2 that was poorly executed, to Quakelive: an absolute disgrace of a Quake game that doesn't even deserve the name, and now to Quake Champions: what I can already predict will be awful by the fact that it's 'class' based like Overwatch, which is a sham of a FPS.

Best thing you people can do is go to Tastyspleen and download Quake 2 for free, and come live on mount Olympus.

When was last time id made a semi good multi player? = Quake 3. And it had to be driven by community vision. Q2 was shit in multi. It was inferior to Q1 multi. Q4 was a disaster too, both single player and multi.

Dont forget that id wanted to disable strafe/circle jumps cuz it was a bug. Some people at this time were loud enough to make that not happen at least in the quake games.

You think this game will have good movements? Have you seen how a catastroph idengine is nowadays in terms of rendering, mouse input (since idtech4, much worse in 5) and movements?

megatextures is a very bad tech, not suited for any responsive games. And its ugly.

Quake 2 was shit in multiplayer? What fucking planet are you from? Quake 2 has the best multiplayer in the entire series. Super complex duel, very good 2v2 and 4v4, very good CTF, and lots of other mods like ActionQ2.

It was complex in movement, aim, strategy and tactics, while retaining the hardcore aspects of Quake, like super strong weaponry, no handicapped spawning or starting weapons, and no simplified time based Megahealth.

Quake 2 IS the pinnacle of skill.

this reminds me of Unreal Championship (1) for xbox.
Standardsettings where
raceabilitys:
human: normal
genmokai: 80hp higher muvementspeed
juggernaut: 200hp low movementspeed
agypts: 100hp but doublejumps in different direktions (air control)
robots: extrem high an long jumps.

and u have from each race different chars to choose with different loadouts.

torch (human) shockrifle with more dmg
some gen mokai had shockrifle with higher firerate. this beast was so fast in movement and firerate that it could easly kill him self by running with his own shockcombo..

was funny in ctf

like genmokay with longer holding shildgun... nice flagrunner

and the was option for "compmode" everything equal no mutators.

i played it 1-2years on xbox...

considering the fact that the new DOOM was a success for its single player, and the QUAKE Champions will have strafe-jumping as well as rocket-jumping, a lightninggun, a railgun, and some of the good old characters from previous Quake games, I have a lot of hope for this new QUAKE Champions.
Especially since Tim Willits said that it will be e-sport orientated and supported by Bethesda/id Software for future tournaments etc... Means that it will be a multiplayer game at its core.

I don't mind if it's class based personally. I do enjoy overwatch, maybe not as much as quake or reflex, but class-based games are fun.

If it's like TF2/OW with strafe-jumping, rocket-jumping and lg/rl/rail, I'll be very happy tbh. I understand the hardcore classic duel fans, but try to be a bit more open-minded, class-based gametypes can be good actually, if designed right.

Tbh as long as I have my 150fps, configurable graphics settings (as well as crosshairs etc), my beloved lightninggun, a railgun, and a rocket launcher with RJ and strafe-jumping, with some cool QUAKE characters and graphics, I'll be more than happy.

With this new Quake, and QuakeCon being the last bastion of Quake Live tournaments, this 2016 edition might indeed be the last one to host a big QL pro tournament.

The game we've followed for more than 16 years now, may finally end its run in August (or not, who knows, but it seems more likely now than ever).

Let's enjoy it, although I'm always hoping, there might never be a game played like this one was, again in our lifetime.

Some demos are on youtube too of UKCCL matches. I used to have loads of demos so when I have time i might have to try and dig them out. I used to help admin UKCCL matches too so took demos of various teams. They are all on a cdrom somewhere in the loft :)

Don't buy a ps4. I regret it every second of my life. I thought now that I'm a fulltime work life scrub I may as well dive into console casual world but that shit is horrible beyond believe except for Diablo 3, FIFA and Racing Games.

You cant propperly use mouse and keyboard and there are very few Titels that provide a good local coop experience which on paper would be the only selling Point for a fucking console.

This is not a classic Quake revival. The game having classes and MOBA-OW-like abilities makes it not be. Guess you skipped through that part. This is just using a recognizable brand to release a new, different game than the previous ones. Same that happened with Quake 2.

Wouldn't say it's better than proper aircontrol ( as in quakeworld ) but in a context where strafejumping is your only real way of gaining speed, yeah, it's a lot smoother than the turbonerfed aircontrol of reflex or cpm.

Name sounds cool tbh.

Fuck it never thought this genre would go so far.

1996 - 2016. TWENTY YEARS. Still present in gaming community in this form or the other. This game (Quake Champions) looks like it might actually do some damage on the scene, lots of people get excited about it. On the other hand, lots of people, disciplined by blunders like QLd evelopment, are extremely reserved or flat-out pessimistic in their opinions. Let's hope that this game will help them change their minds.

This is also a very good reminder that QL is going down soon. If they have a go with QC, QL will have to fold to funnel players into the new project. So...yep.

I've finished Doom on Nightmare around 9 hours after release iirc. Also finished Ultra Nightmare since then.

I've played a bunch of Doom multiplayer after release but honestly, there is no incentive to keep playing as the game doesn't allow for a community to form around it right now (No possibility for custom/private matches, so also no possibility for tournaments).

Ultra nightmare is already very difficult. I'm not sure what they could have done to make it more difficult without being plain unfair like giving you only 1 hp or something.
The incentive thing is interesting but I doubt it would manage to sell lots of copies since people would realize they have no chance of winning. Also, how can you really know that no cheats were used on the run? Like making it so that enemies miss more often or stuff like that. I'm sure it just wouldn't work.

I kinda saw Noctis dying and then starting not from the very beginning and i knew that at the moment he did Nightmare already (twas some days after release) so i thought that the Ultra differs only with the amounts of monsters.

I must have mixed up something!

Still, it could be made almost impossible - moar monstaz, like in first Dooms on Nightmare, less ammo and health, you couldnt melee them all, could you?

There are no checkpoints, just one life, but it's not that very difficult. You only need a few attempts.

Nightmare with 4-5 times the enemies would make it a lot better than Ultra imo, and much more fun also.

I dont get this, why does a class based system has to do with anything in duelling?

Why does one thing has to exclude the other?

It shouldnt be hard at all to have a duel-class that has the same attributes, the same way you disable powerups etc in duels. If ID couldnt be that dynamic i would really feet sorry for them. Its no more effort in coding, but they dont have to miss out on a thousand duell-players. As well as the competition side to it.

I am pretty sure there will be a duel character or a duel setting that would enable you to play in the most purest form.

It can't be Overwatch clone since they must have started development at least 2-3 years ago to have anything playable at the moment. Concept of classes in FPS has a long history starting from some mod to Quake 1 iirc.

I am sure someone has already mentioned it but early on Quake 3 was supposed to have classes, too. Simple ones, I reckon, like those they introduced as runes in Team Arena - light (scout), balance (with we got in the end), and heavy (guard). At least that's what I remember.

Could be fun if there's a "pure" or "classic" mode and it ends up as the default gameplay for duels, tdm, etc. Not holding my breath, though.

I don't think id is going revitalize the game the way Blizzard did with StarCraft 2. The old days are not coming back. It's a new market and we have to acknowledge it. We're fossil fuel anyway. I can almost feel the MOBA kids extracting the juices from my body to level up [their characters].

+1 on the classes, but couldn't find something to quote from - thought it was in JC's .plan files, couldn't find a reference there ; maybe I heard it once in one of his keynotes, or read it in an interview of some other id person involved back then.
The way I remember learning about it, whoever mentioned the axed classes system definitely made a connection with the different body types in the Q3 "cast" (lucy, keel, tankjr as heavy for instance). That was very convenient for NTF :)

Just watched the interviews. I got an impression that every character will get a unique ability (probably with cooldown): teleport, temporary wallhack, shade, charge... I don't really mind that as long as all characters behave the same otherwise. So far nothing made me thing that there will be multiple classes or objective oriented gameplay, especially since Willits said you have to find a guy that suits you and stick with him so I guess no counter picking or bullshit like that will be necessary. I'd hate if you can choose slow character with high HP but slower movement for example. But what will be annoying as hell is that we won't be able to force enemy models due to characters being unique. Imagine how annoying it will be to aim at Orb. I like to use Visor but what if Klesk has a better ability, will I be forced to listen to his squeaky fucking voice while jumping? Also the guns look fucking huge, they better not take a half of the screen and there's gotta be drawgun 0 option. Aside from abilities the biggest red flag is Saber fucking Interactive. Didn't id learn anything from outsourcing Doom multiplayer?

anyway, RIP Quake franchise. after the success with DOOM, the obvious move was to make a singleplayer reboot of Quake1 with a better multiplayer this time.

i'm not against trying new things (classes, abilities), but I have little confidence they can execute those ideas well. it's very risky.

It seems to be a PC only release, multiplayer only (way less assets/maps to create) and it's (in part, but maybe a big part) outsourced in Russia so I also expect it not to have a big budget (compared to the typical "AAA game" - I hate that classification).

I wouldn't be surprised if after the Doom DLC are done id started working on a singleplayer Quake though (potentially but not necessarily a reboot).

Am I the only one thinking that, when you want to have class...erm "champions" in a game so much that you make this feature the subtitle of the game itself, it can't focus on duel?

I mean, balance issues aside, you would WANT to emphasize the combination of the champions no? 1v1, fine but that would just look like QL + a bigger arsenal. Idc if you have +2 weapons or +2 "distinctive abilities", its all just "stuff that makes you do things" (and hopefully requires skill). But combining classes makes more sense. 2v2, 4v4. "How about the use that unique ability A with B?" etc.

I think what he's saying is a race in StarCraft is a composition of units with specific attributes, much like team modes would be in class based quake. Try finding 2 units with different attributes in sc where one isn't superior to other in 1v1

No, that makes sense. If duel is there, which isn't guaranteed at all, I expect it to be a side thing like some sort of TDM or zombie mode in CS. I think we can expect one main objective based (CTF maybe?) team gametype with casual/competitive matchmaking and then a few more side gametypes available through a classic server browser.

I didn't watch Bethesda at E3, but when I heard there was a new Quake game announced, naturally I was excited. When I heard the name, I didn't think anything of it. Then I watched the trailer, and saw visor activating a wallhack. That's when I knew. Looked it up, sure enough I saw "every character will have unique abilities", my heart broke. This is a sad day for gaming. I don't play Overwatch, one of the few of my old quake buddies that don't, because I don't like the idea of moba characters in an fps. I think it takes away the skill value from the game and is just as bad if not worse than loadouts. Built in wallhacks and autoaim, even if momentarily is just awful. To see this happen to a game with the name Quake attached to it is depressing, and it's all being done under the pretense that that's what people want nowadays, that's what sells. Instant gratification, anyone can get in and have fun without any idea of what they're doing, that isn't Quake and I for one will not be buying it. Don't fool yourselves into thinking this will be the game we've all been waiting for.

as many others said, it probably won't be that. Just your regular quake with a different ability for each caracter. Imagine a ztn duel but with one player with wallhack and the other one with teleport. Maybe other details. But I'm quite sure weapon and health pick up, strafe jumping etc. will still be there. Its not gonna OW, its gonna be Quake with some refreshing new features

It would be great if they make the game noob friendly to attract a huge player base, flashy vehicles, no strafe jumps, autoaim, headshots, etc... and later on, they should remove these things with patches, also add strafejump movement and update the game until it becomes Quake 3. That's the only way how we should get a large scene, also keep the game's complexity.

Quake Live and iD Software (Well just Syncerror and Sponge really) has made me very pessimistic and cynical over the years making me have zero faith in future installments and arena FPS in general. However after seeing the reorganised company going back to their roots for the doom single player campaign and adding to it in the exact way we wanted and hearing what Tim Willits had to say gives me for the first time in ages actual faith in this upcoming game. At the very least it will be a faster Overwatch with good responsive movement and aim in an arena environment and at most something really awesome. Either way I feel like it's going to be decent.

I've played it 5mn and couldnt play more cuz it was too shit. I wasnt aware we wanted no strafejump or slow game. With shity monsters and no more gothic atmosphere. Fillled with repetitive rooms/levels which are all copy pasts aka snapmap. Oh and dont forget "glory kills".

You are exactly what you cricticize for other games. basicaly its good because it looks graphicaly good? ok.

Not only do i played Doom 1 and 2 but also many mods. Doom 2 was faster than 2016 Doom even tho it didnt had strafejump, which was introduced in the first 3D game from id, and then onward until they decided to make shity console games like Doom 2016 and not make a proper PC port.

People can have fun with new Doom but its cleary not what it should have been. Unless you are happy with no modabilitity, slow moves, big ass crosshairs to see from the couch and repetitive levels with tasteless boss fights. ie clearly a console game.

I presume you never tried the nightmare difficulty of the old Doom, enemies with hitscan react super fast, and you need to speedrun because enemies are respawning infinitly.

That, that's a fast game.

I saw the ultranightmare run https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6J352J_RG8 everything look so slow and clunky. People seems amased at this.

I dont belive the quakers wanted to see Doom 2016 turn out like that, sure it has good graphics, but then again its not the only thing quakers are looking for in an FPS from id.

Yes its a good game from many people's POV. Is it what we wanted? no.

I think i've talked to enough long time Quake players to know what is the prototype of a Quake player in terms of needs when it comes to gaming.

Sure your point still stand for a compagny that wants to make millions of dollars you want to attract as many players as possible. I never said the opposite.

I do think it will fail miserably because it wont be 2016 Doom with singleplayer but aimed at multiplayer. But there is already a saturated market in terms of multiplayer FPS. Not to mention Blizzard is a monster, because they know how to make good games.

You think this FPS can be driven by competition and that ESL or IEM will take it? Well in my opinion I dont think so. There is already CSGO and Overwatch will be huge too. Not much place for a downgraded Quake version X.

As far as FPS games go I don't find blizzard to be a monster. They are a gamedev powerhouse. And Overwatch is undoubtedly a great MP fps game.

Where Blizzard shined is in the way they actually got a competitive playerbase while in closed beta. Not just teams but casters and visibility in the community. I've never seen such an approach from id/Bethesda.
It would be unimaginable for them to pool in players from long standing community sites like this and consider pooling players of different skill levels to produce a 6 months of running game tweaking, closed competitions which are casted, developing game meta etc.

IEM/ESL/FACEiT/GosuGamers primary interest in running quake is in what it represents, a competitive FPS history. Oldschool players/teams, previous games as a reference into the lore, some of best moments in gaming are what follows the title.
Also money :) if what Tim said is true and they invest heavily into competitive aspect of the game.

I think it far more complex of a topic to be ruled either way in the sense that if you measure all the pros overwatch currently has over the potential pros quake could have if done right it could go either way.

If they downplay the refreshment of the franchise they tend to loose people on all fronts since there are games like Reflex/QL/Warsaw/Xonotic/UT4 which will see a return of most HC players and might never loose that core playerbase they have. If they go all out and bring in new players and loose that 2k of HC players but get close to what overwatch is pulling now as total playerbase then it is up to single person whether they will participate or not in it from those previously mentioned 2k players.

As a hardcore quaker I will agree that the multiplayer is horrendous and the map making is below average but the main focus seemed to have been the single player which they pulled off very well in my honest opinion. I still play jump mazes to this day in the old doom which is very fast paced. Is the new doom as fast as the old? No. Is it a fast paced game? Yes. I think they found the right balance between realism and game play.

However, "we will have rocket jumps and strafejumps" may very well mean that some champions can rjump and some others strafejump, maybe with some doing both, but then being handicaped in a different manner.

I can't tell if the guy was playing politics or what.

Frankly at this stage, that interview is more than enough. You can see from the answer that it's simply too early to give out real details, which anyways we will get longer before we can actually play. Patience will be a thing here.

What really matters at the moment, and it's the reason people here should be happy, is that id software cares about this game. We may have so used about id software no longer caring about Quake Live, that we forgot what it means when they do care for real.

Personally, after Doom, my faith is restored. Not because Doom and Quake share anything (they are different products), but because with Doom they have shown they can take one of their legacy products, understand its core game-play, and pull out a faithful modern interpretation. If they do an half as good job with Quake Champions, I'm fucking happy.

Also, people complaining about the characters abilities etc. We don't know shit at the moment. Even if we had a bit more info, all boils down to how exactly they design this stuff, how they balance it with the classic elements, and ultimately how much effort they put into respecting what Quake is when twisting some of the mechanics.

It could be terrible, yes, but it could also be fucking awesome, and no discussion over a cinematic can get us any closer to knowing how it will be. All we have to do is wait.

silver lining ...

key things i got out of it:

- Abilities are tied to the meta game, so not influencing more then item placement/powerups
- They are refactoring a gamemode for competitive play meaning focus
- They are going to work on features that are tied to streaming/casting and spectating which is important.

Can't tell you how much it would mean to casual players if anyone could replay or share an air rocket you did no matter what your skill level is. Or double/tripple rails etc.
Personal POTG style that overwatch implemented.

Quake has some of best frag movies, it's where they can see and pickup what an air rocket is :)
Also achievements are big for casual players so I guess so would try because of that ...

He pulled of a few impressives and yes even an air rocket but not while I was there. He kept playing and did it during that week.

What he described was pretty random though :) he was more into CA so i guess it was to be expected.

Now to the point I was making, it's 2016, casuals should need to extract good frags to have those shared, social media and getting communities hyped between gamer friends is more about easy sharing. So something like overwatches personal play of the game you could save locally would mean a lot for any game that wants to have a viral option.

Yes I agree. That's why I said "not so much for casuals", directly related to air rockets, because that just doesn't happen too much with them. Achievements or some kind of rewards after hitting the 1st/10th/50th air rocket would help. And some kind of replay showing your best moments and give the share option maybe...

We'll see how much they can listen, but yes.. Valve's efforts with CSGO and dota 2 show what you can do with the old, good gameplay concepts without messing them up, just making the stuff around them good and fancy.

And I say that as a person who thinks valve is cheap as fuck. Still, their models for development work.

Promote actual teamplay and actual action rather than pussy conservative gameplay nonsense and perhaps this game will finally become good. Otherwise it's going to be a bore fest like CA VQL for those who don't enjoy the duel gametype. Another issue is that this game involves too much crosshair positioning and strafe shooting non sense, rather than encouraging solid mouse aiming.
Fix these issues or enjoy a steady decay and slow paced FPS like VQL's snail gameplay.

TLDR : less rocket and railgun abuse, more teamplay, more direct action, more aiming, less zzzz.

Do not be fooled. A console version has not been ruled out. Bethesda is choosing their words very carefully in order to win over the hardcore PC gamers and quake fans. But they will likely release a console version later in order to cash in. All this talk about "unlocked framerates" and "strafe jumping" just a hype-generation scheme which will not result in an actual good game. They know that the quake community desperately wants to relive the glory days of quake and they are playing into that desire in order to turn a quick profit. Quake Champions is going to be a mediocre and casual game akin to the latest DOOM and Overwatch. It will be marketed as an e-sports game but will not be successful. It will die out in 1-2 years after release just like Overwatch is going to die. The true quake fans will continue to play Quake Live and/or Reflex, but of course we are a dying breed which means that servers will begin to get more and more empty. It has been over a decade since the glory days of quake and we must accept them as a distant memory. Do not buy into the hype because you will only be let down in the long run.

I've been looking at the larger gaming communities in my country and while they have reported on the announcement on their front news page, there haven't been any threads or mentions among their users in the forums to discuss Quake Champions and so there's absolutely no hype among the gamers here. I wonder if Id Software will be able to create enough hype and refresh the game in such a way that gamers will get interested in it.

Last LAN I organised we had a giveaway for QL keys and only a handful of people came by the compo desk to claim a key. I was running the bar at some point and some people were talking about the beamer above my head and I asked if any of them had claimed their keys yet, while pointing out the raffle on the big screen. They said it was a "loser game" that had no players and wasn't interesting to play because it was so dumb.

These are the players that came for League of Legends, Counter-Strike and Hearthstone competitions. Id has a long way to go to convince the general gaming population to even consider playing Quake Champions, let alone buy it at launch. It's the old story again, make it too hardcore and it won't get picked up, make it too casual and you'll lose the fans of the first hour. I'm curious to see where this will go. All of the interviews by Willits are very promising, but he has been comforting people who were already Quake fans. Unlocked FPS and 120hz doesn't mean shit to most of these gamers.

A lot of people were drawing a comparison with Overwatch, but since I've never played it I can't tell if that's eSports viable. I do know that Overwatch has threads on all the big gaming communities here and the number of posts is far above average, so it's definitely being discussed and praised. I hope it'll be the same for Quake Champions but right now, the hype isn't there.
