Call me bitter and whatnot I don't care, but I genuinely feel a terrible sadness watching those three very dumb people, and it's just awful feeling that two of them actually had the chance to work on DOOM, got paid for it, and that's the game they ended up with.

Me thinks making bad computer games is not a very reliable sign for low intelligence.

1, I do not consider the new DOOM a "bad computer game", but looks like it's not a exceptionally great one either, like how the original DOOM was in its own time. So it isn't a bad game at all, it’s just bad compared to its potential.

2, Also, the Original DOOM was nothing less but mind-blowing and revolutionary graphics wise, and it was truly ahead of its time while this one looks great, but also looks like something from 5+ years ago at least.

3, They are dumb because anybody who didn’t live under a rock in the last decade knows exactly what the faithful fans and the gamers want, and instead of doing that, they come out with their controller and shown a Rage like slow-ass dumb zombie shooter game as DOOM in 2016, utterly stomping on the legacy of one of the greatest video game of all times (which would be also a complete goldmine too ofc), and they have obviously no idea again that something is wrong (like how they had no idea about Rage or about the open-beta demo fail beforehand). So they are dumb because they honestly believe that going with the casual un-elitist dumb console-shooter way is the right way to go.

I wouldn't consider myself a graphics snob at all, for me it's always gameplay>graphics. But damn, if this doom doesn't look at best, marginally better than doom 3. I could see if they took a certain art style or direction, like Dishonored for instance. But it appears they're trying to make things look as realistic as possible with very dated looking graphics.

you forgot that when doom was released in 1993 there was a totally different marketplace and fps was a revolutionary new genre that just emerged on pc, now there is an fps released every week, if it wasnt for games like cod and halo, the new doom would be received much better, its kinda like bashing wright brothers for not keeping up with plane building desings 20 years later, they were pioneers, but then things took off and many more people joined the competition. just imagine being in a gamedev buisiness for that long, a whole 2 decades of technical progress totally changed the landscape, we now have high speed cable internet, app stores and 1 dollar games, the rules have been rewritten so many times it no longer resembles anything like when the first 2 doom games have been released, if doom 1 game was released today it would have probably ended up as a 1 dollar app on the app store, even then it wouldnt really fit well with mobile touch controls.

it has perfect relevancy, expecting a gamedev company to be relevant for more than a few years in a row is absurd, take a look at cod series, that series lasted for less than 5 years before being shoved into b-rated games list. it was a miracle that id lasted as long as it did in staying relevant for at least 20 years from keen to rage. companies are people, people get bored of their work all the time and move on to other things. especially with long hours and close to launch meeting a deadline to meet another mass of trolling from the fans, imagine working all day and night and then be met with absurd demands from fans who done nothing productive to make that game better complain how bad it is.

One can make a good or a bad game in any give time. There are good and bad games made by teams from the size of a one-man army basement dweller to AAA studios with the size of a small town. DOOM was a exceptionally good one in its own time, and it's not unrealistic to expect the same today.

4, Yes I love Quakelive, but I hated the Quakelive id software released as a final product. That was one of the worst games in the history of videogaming, it was a horrible failure, and all the millions who were waiting for it laughed or cried and slowly left because it was a broken crap (no exaggeration)
I stayed because I loved Quake and Quake 3, and because I did not give up hope. I will stay with Doom too, because the weapons and engine seems to be very good again (after all that’s why we love shooters from id) and hope dies last.

Quake Live was nowhere near being a failure upon its release in 2009 (including beta time), and was actually quite a leap forward, especially compared to Q4. No more competitive mods wars and thus incompatible demos, free registration, good old vQ3-based physics and weapons, GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, and OS X support, centralized contents deployment (bug fixes, new maps, skins, whatever), instant access to your gaming profile and config from any computer with a browser installed and connected to the Internet, detailed personal stats, progress tracking, social features like friend lists and stuff, all sorts of leagues and ladders, skill-based matchmaking (admittedly poorly implemented, but it was the right idea; too bad they didn't come up with Elo/Glicko early enough)... These things were really progressive and awesome at the time. (I could only miss ability to run one's own custom dedicated server.)

They blew it all by 2015, but that's a different story.

Where are you coming from? I was there since the first wave, all the way til this Steam launch (in the focus group). I always try to be objective and fair to the devs (even if they shit on you, as they did several times), but you certainly have no idea what you are talking about.
It was a brilliant idea, to play from the browser (I loved it tbh), but really?.... To begin with, it was worse than Q3 1.32c vanilla. So to make this clear, I just dropped out all the endless GBs of hyper-awesome community content for the sake of your argument, and it still sucked.
It couldn't even launch, there was some queue shitfest right on the first night, then the xmpp and punkbuster madness, the plugin crashes, the config save and restore horrors, the continuous disk writes in the backgrounds with every click and whatnot..... I can't even graps how long the list would be if I would need to write it down here, it was simply broken and people only played it because of the Quake-3 parts... it got a lot better when they started to add the stuff the community asked for (since day one btw), but that doesn't change how bad it was at the original launch.

I'm aware of some allegedly XMPP-related problems people had occasionally been experiencing during the first few months after the game went public, but that's a bit too far stretched argument to call it one of the worst games in the history of videogaming, a horrible failure, and a broken crap. Queues were organized to limit the stress and prevent the overloading of the servers, and were removed after several days (shameless Wikipedia quote).

Sorry to hear that QL crashed and misbehaved for you; I personally had never suffered from plugin crashes or continuous background disk writes while running the game under not officially supported FreeBSD: it was smooth and consumed minimal CPU time (that alone makes it more broken for me now than it was back in its old days, but it's beyond the point here). Certainly QL had bugs of various severity (and still has), but so does any software.

The fact that you mostly complain about technical issues makes this "QL is (was) the worst game in the history" statement of yours even more ridiculous compared to how e.g. Q4 was broken upon release and what it took to make it actually playable as a competitive FPS.

You don't understand. What it had good or working was from Q3 or from the stuff the community asked for... It was a continuous whine back there to make them add bright skins for example. If you take out Q3 and the stuff they took from OSP, CPMA, etc... you got a waste product, and that is a fact. I'm not even sure if they really lost the forum or just deleted it, because it was full of endless problems, on a scale I rarely see on the internet, and I read game related forums a lot.They were just lucky that Q3 was so awesome it was able to carry the whole thing on its back.

Actually it is ideal. Just give it a thought: you do need to have those assets readily available, and I doubt you'd wanted them to be (re)downloaded on demand every time without any local caching ('cause naturally all of it has to end up in your computer's memory).

In all fairness, you'd have do download >300MB just once, after that it's merely incremental updates.

QL was presented like a flash game. No one in his right mind downloads 300 MBs to play a flash gamet, especially in 2009.

It was just a bad idea to begin with, alike thinking it was going to self-sustain solely on in-game advertisement.

Maybe with a better implementation it wouldn't have been as bad. For example it could have had 1/3 of the maps and be "only" 100 MBs, and could have delayed the release of the game by one or two years until it was more polished (2011 QL was miles better than 2009's). Also having a better network infrastructure at the very beginning could have changed the whole faith of the project, as literally millions of players were lost in the first week as they had to do queues to play a flash-like game. Being on Steam could have changed things as well.

What makes you think that QL was presented like a Flash game? They went the web app way because they (id) were frustrated by the fact that (Tim Willits' quote follows) six months after [any id game was] released [...] you're not going to be able to play it because there are patches, and then there is, you know, promods, and then there're other mods, and then there're server mods; it's ridiculous, you can't figure it out, I can't figure it out, I tried to play Q3 online I couldn't figure it out. It's kind of funny how people watch online videos which can often be worth much more than 300MB, especially in HD-quality, but are somehow irritated by one-time download of low-volatile game contents.

Because it was a game/interface 100% embedded to a website, and your own quote says the idea was to start playing in five seconds. That's the market of Flash games; also called "browser games" if you don't want the negative connotation but is the same thing.

People that are into those games demand immediate action. Your own quote shows they knew this before hand. However, the execution of that was horrible, and that's my point.

No one is going to wait an hour to play a game embedded to a browser, which was the time required when the game was launched, as there were queues to play because the company didn't though that many people were going to be interested in it. Still, even without the queues still no one waits more than a minute loading browser games, so what I say is that the game should have been a 50 MB download instead of 300, removing 80% of the maps for the sake of speed.

Another problem browser games have is that no one gives them a second chance. If there queues one day, no one goes back the next day to see if the problem was solved. It is what it is. At the same time, people do give second chances to "installed games".

I know that about videos, but regular users do foolishly reject web games based on the MBs, especially back in 2009. They just do. At the same time, the same people aren't reluctant to download that exact same amount if it is done using a separate launcher, so if id software wanted to release a more comprehensive game then they should have done what LoL and Steam did.

I personally like the idea of having the game embedded to a browser. The simplest of the simplest. That's the very reason why I tried QL to begin with, coming from Q2. Still, the numbers show (or at least when there were awards stats) that QL has millions of users that have not played a single match, and those accounts were created in the first two days of the game. That's why I don't like the idea of releasing a very much heavy browser game. It's one or the other.

I did not talk about the implementation or the execution, but about the idea. For example, the ability which made it possible to run a server on demand anywhere in the world with custom settings was simply awesome (it came later tho), so I think it had great potentials.

you are throwing every1 in the same basket... every time there was an update there were people that had their desires fulfilled and other that were pissed because their desires weren't fulfilled.

And that is how the world turns... in every game.

Actually, when the devs started listening and added maps, server launching abilities, settings and cvars to make it a more professional game, etc... the community was very grateful imo. We helped the devs in our free time whenever we could, people started to make tools and sites, organized cups and tourneys, and most of us bought subs for many years, even when we knew that things were turning into an unwanted direction.... and yes we were loud at those times, but that was because we were worried... and we were also mostly right sadly.

Why is it not relevant? Expectation and experience of people at the time was almost non existant, and lack of variety not to mention being a lead developer on the field meant people wanted to play and had little choice to replace your game.

Today if you don't like doom, you can hop onto Halo, if that is not your cup of tea go Warsow, Reflex, Quakelive. You into a slower tactical shooters (90's had those?) you'd go RainbowSix, CounterStrike. More of a single player experience, Bioshock etc... FPS title a week, free to play, arena, objective based, scifi, fantasy, modern, historical, photorealistic, postnuclear. Don't forget even known RPG franchises are using FPS as an interface.

Now what can you do to stay true to Doom there?
Throw out a pixelated fantasy gorefest game of alltimes for the blackberry platform or reintegrate known patterns you already made up during 20 years but other games/community refined into meaningful elements to the experience.

I guess I'm pretty okay with interpretation of doom, provided they honor their past and provide meaningful tools to mod the game. It has sufficient number of elements of both worlds that it makes me wonder just how much can be done with this game.

Because the goal should be making DOOM awesome, and not just good for everyone.

As I've written above, you can include or exclude yourself from any and all experiences regarding a new title based on what your tastes are, but do not delude yourself into thinking that DOOM in 2016 was a game that was going to ignore every other person other than you :)

Our "awesome" means "it sucks for everyone else". Doom1-like gameplay just doesn't work in consoles. It is what it is.

Though as chubz explained, the good thing is there's a plethora of games available for every taste. If Doom 4 doesn't feature the classic Doom gameplay, then there's several old and new alternatives that do.

Plus, I once again have to say that the Doom and Quake devs never intended their games to be played like we do; or in other words, to be "awesome". That happened because of a mixture between sheer luck (games having bugs that allow us to travel several times faster than intended) and the community providing the content, the servers and the tournaments for free; all that in PC-only games and that back when they were much cheaper to make. Since those conditions are likely to never be replicated in this subgenre, then it's likely that awesomeness won't happen again here.

Multiplayer was a bit disappointing but maybe there is still hope for it yet with the snap map and custom modes that are still coming, I'll reserve judgment for that.

The single player actually looks pretty good, they added some RPGish like elements to it where you can progress and upgrade your weapons and what not and that is fine to an extent I think.

But I for one think it looks fun and can't wait to play this campaign. I would image it to be quite fun on nightmare or ultra nightmare or whatever and a bit of a challenge.

They said you can turn off the melee finishers too so if I buy it then I think a nightmare run with finishers off could be quite fun and challenging.

I said about Doom being a generic run-of-mill futuristic shooter, and it really looks like that. Dont get me wrong, it might still be a fun game.

And it appears that I was 100% on target in regards to it being a nostalgia-driven IP milk cow. Fine, let it be just that. That double-barreled shotgun just looks lolaazo compared ot the high-tech environments. Probably the space marine likes to keep it for close encounters, hehe.

Overall: Looks okay, but that's the bottom line. I loled and lol at people presenting it as the ultimate in gaming and a sort of an FPS Jesus that will be the savior of the genre. Get real pls.

Have you ever heard about gaming being a business? Do you really think these three guys care about some "loyal fans", all 10 of them, who still fap to original doom? A reality check: They do not. They do what the company tells them to do. Some of you have a romanticized view of game devs. 99% of them are people who are told what to do and what not to do by the suits who have all angles calculated and cornered in financial terms and that's as far as they can go, whether they have a good relationship with the fans or not.
Somebody apparently thought that console-izing DOOM in terms of gameplay and controls was a viable business idea, so it was done. I suspected it, also wrote about that in one of the previous DOOM threads. Who in the business the fuck cares about some legacy? The biggest target now are teens who weren't born when Q or Q2 came out not to mention some ancient early 90's Doom series. They dont give a shit about the game being faithful to anything. They will buy it because it looks cool, plays cool.

You want faithfulness and not stomping on any legacy? Go play Brutal Doom.

Going through .cfg files I've stumbled upon two interesting cvars

- strafejumping 0
- rampjump 0

Using the modding tools of snapmap (which imo is not actually a modding tool) it could be easily to make a map with these setting enabled and playtest the shit out of it.


Quake 4 when it came out was shit, but community with their q4max and some other things, loads of maps made a game 4months into the game playable and enjoyable, I'm hoping for a similar development here with balanced weapons....no unnecessary shitty 2nd firing mode, proper drops, weapon pickups, true arena style game....


If they are smart enough, they will soon see that PC communitiy will not play that shitty MP design which feels like you are playing with a gamepad and not with KM setup. That could make them rething and maybe re-relase the MP as a standalone and made as it should be in the first place, the game so far looks like it's made with an intent of singleplayer not multiplayer in mind.....but MP what could you expect from the developers who worked on halo and cod franchises? Exactly this, tons of gadgets, useless progression levels which only differentiate the player2player basis and makes it impossible to balance properly.....from all of that only achivements could work as in QL but with every achivement unlocked you got a free cosmetics or whatever....and the most annoying part of the game is DLC....really? That stuff was never in any previous installments of any id games, or pc-arena shooters in general....that marketing strategy....well guys, I hope you fail soon and realise what a terrible mistake you've made with this awesome franchise.
Putting all this together makes Doom3 a lot better game, simple, good SP, good MP, equal mechanics for SP and MP, playable from the box without needing to mod anything....this? utter failure, only ones I've seen excited are console gamers since they don't have a proper arena shooter for years, but for pc it's below zero.

I kinda liked the movement in Rage. I hope that strafejuming and ramp jumps can be enabled in single player mode. (And some custom multiplayer maps of course!!)

Doing (modded) Chillax coop with friends was one of the very best online gaming expereince I ever had in my life:)
