Steam did not save my config (9 comments)

So Win 10 crashed after 2 mouth of use, it said something like "Ops, something went wrong" and actually gave me a sad smiley... no kidding.
After that i couldn't start windows and had to reinstall good 'ol Win 7.

I thought i would reinstall Quake live but Quakelive.com force me (as far as i know) to download the game though steam, i jumped in to a game and i quickly realized by all the pretty textures that my config is not there anymore.
I haven't saved the config anywhere ells, stupid i know but i rarely play anymore i thought it would be safe on the servers.

Is there a way to get my config back? or is this the last time i ever play quakelive? because i'm not redoing my config.

You could try to find your config with some recovery software. Maybe there is a chance it's still there, if you just did a quick format of your harddrive. (Search for .cfg files)

If this fails you could ask [email protected] if they still have it on their server.

These are the only two options i can think of, without you making a new config...

But back on to the current problem, if you formatted the drive where your old QuakeLive install is then you're out of luck unless you do drive recovery, they don't store backups of the cloud configs (that anyone client would be able to get access to anyway), so your cloud data will have been replaced with the settings from when you were last running the game.

Otherwise, to quote a post I had to make on the QL forum earlier today, the link will guide you to finding your CFG to move it to Steam if it's still available from a standalone install.
But you may have to look in a "Windows.OLD" folder if there is one after a windows reinstall.

If you haven't manually created a config entirely by hand such as gngbng.cfg , or used the \writeconfig myCFGname command, then there won't be anything other than qzconfig.cfg and repconfig.cfg in %AppData%\..\LocalLow\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3 (or %appdata%\id Software\quakelive\home\baseq3 if using XP )

If the steam version if missing your settings now things become more complicated -

you should copy qzconfig.cfg and repconfig.cfg somwhere other than the steam baseq3 and then importantly - rename both of those files (eg just add 2 to the end), move them to \Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake Live\<SteamID64>\baseq3 and then exec them both from within the steam version of the game

\exec qzconfig2.cfg
\exec repconfig2.cfg
(if you used the suggestion of adding 2)

repconfig.cfg will contain binds, vstrs and most client settings
qzconfig.cfg will contain aliases
(among other things)

You can edit them to remove things you don't want beforehand.
Once you've done this i'd recommend \writeconfig myconfig to take a single backup of your settings in case anything goes wrong in the future.

Yeah thanks. I got my win 10 through the free offer so i didn't have the serial key so thats why i didn't even bother with a win10 boot usb. In retrospect if i knew wouldn't have to enter the key again i would have done a repair of win 10.

Yeah i cant get my config from the cloud as you said. Quake live support told me so aswell. I did try to find my old config trough a HD recovery but i only managed to get a partial recovery so it didn't work. Is there any chance an other program will do a better job? If so wich one is recommended?

are worth trying I guess

the important thing with data recover though is you need to stop using the disk you want to recover data from, any access, OS booting, and certainly application installation all are likely to overwrite the clusters that you're attempting to recover data from that have been marked as not in use.

So unless you're installing them elsewhere, the more apps you install to try recovery, the less likely your chances are of finding anything I'm afraid :/

What's wrong with running through the menus again changing some settings, then /writeconfig? Shit doesn't take that long, probably spent more time trying to recover than it would've to make a new one.

its not about the visuals, its my per gun sens/fov/cross hair/cross hair color/accel that i been using and tweaking since the beginning of Q3. i might give it a go but it feels really shitty starting from scratch tbh :(
