mind you, Q3A had no bunny hopping, no double jumping, no aircontrol and simplistic duel maps like Q3Tourney2 and Q3Tourney4 ..
if you had been a good player in QW or Q2, both with bunny hopping, q2 with double jumping, qw with aircontrol, wall rocketjumps to gain speed ... complex asymmetric Maps like Q2DM1 or Q2DM3, Q1 Maps like DM2, DM4, DM6, aerowalk, ztn, compared to that Q3A was a laughable game ... but it got all the players ...
same could happen with Doom 4, Bethesda only needs to concentrate also on the multiplayer aspect and launch some big tournaments ... but probably they wont do that and so QL will most likely remain

Doom's arsenal is based on hitscan weapons such as pistols, shotguns, double barrel shotguns, machineguns and chainguns.

Weapons like the rocket launcher or the plasma gun are present but aren't the main weapons and aren't built to work in an arena.

Basically with Doom or Wolfenstein franchise you're going to have a spread pattern hitscan weapon based game, with magazines reloading and moving in an environment where the movement is based on parkour-like moves (at best), not on bouncing balls-like movement like the less realistic but faster quake franchise is (see ultrono arena, which pushed the concept to its core and simply presented the players as spherical hitboxes).

Those are the core reasons a Doom or Wolfenstein franchise game CAN'T supersede a Quake franchise game as arena shooter, independently from it's popularity or acceptance from the community (and it's a given that the new Doom will be popular, infinitely more than quake at least for a while)

yeah, yeah ... humans dont really function on a philosophical theoretical level ... they very often try to explain their doings they chose to do because of emotions using theories to put them on a just level ... truth is if the new Doom comes out as an arena shooter and is given a lot of sponsored tournaments and broadcasters are paid etc. ... noone will give a shit about your hitscan weapon and movement theories and and QL will become a niche ... been there done that (Q1/Q2 -> Q3A)

One would hope for an announcement at Quakecon, 20th anniversary and all that.

I would love to see a remake of quake 3 or whatever like everyone else would, the only problem is the game mechanics/weapons are already pretty perfect, movement items have all been so well thought out. The only thing they can really do is bring out new maps but there is always gonna be bring back ZTN fags, All that will happen is it will be the same game with the same maps slowly reintroduced.The really sad thing is once your on top there is only 1 way you can go :(

New maps as perfect and enjoyable as the likes of ztn and dm6 are theoretically possible, there's just not enough active map-makers for them to naturally occur in time.

Yea it's so annoying that people have just grown tired of arena shooters, the likes of COD, Battlefield, CSS all seem to be thriving, I am a die hard battlefield 2 fan and have been since its release but that is nothing like the console games BF3 and BF4. I find CSS far to repetitive for my liking and just struggled to get into it, CSS zombies on the other hand... Best zombie game ever :D

There is a *slight* chance that when the modern teens get tired of hold-my-hand FPS games that are basically interactive movies (anyone remember dreaded FMV games of yore?) they might get back to "oldschool roots" and that's where the Quake lineage might shine again. MIGHT. Because as far as we can tell now, there's no end to dumbing down FPSs and CoD and their derivatives are still standing strong. Besides, when they even get back to oldschool FPSs, these teens will probably be unable to play them. Bunnyhopping? RJ? tricks? WTF/ HELAP! OMG I CANT MOVE WHERES THE TUTORIAL?

So how will new Quake look like? I think it will never arrive. The Doom4 arrival is dwindling already - many people in the industry woncer whether it will make any impact at all in today's "seen it, played it, dumped it" market. quake is an old game, quake 3, 4 and live are nothing compared to what the original quake was. totally different games. only a true quake 1 remake for single player co-op roles could revive the genre. Another arena style game for the quake franchise is beating a dead horse. bring back monsters and i might see your point.

tl;dr - kids now adays like to play coop with friends, something quake hasn't and won't provide.

I must admit quake online coop evaporating all kinds of monsters in HD would be pretty cool, for the first week or so.. The troll and server antics is what keeps quake alive as much as the pro scene... Who knows what will happen.
