The r_smp cvar is for the graphics engine (hence it starts with and r_), it made the renderer "multithreaded" and it did work once for a short period of time (around 2001).
There was only a few Geforce driver versions where it did not crash (I'm guessing the ones what John used to code it?).
I remember I did not upgrade drivers for a long time because it gave me better fps on one of my systems which had two 1Ghz P3 processors and a Geforce2 based Quadro card.

r_smp wasn't for multicore processors, but for multi-processer mainboards. It's useless anyway for a game like Q, running at 1000 fps on one modern core.

Most software doesn't see multicore/multiproc as anything different they're presented to the software as the same thing by the OS. Hyper threading being virtual cores was a bit different and some software explicitly avoided using it.

I don't remember any Nvidia problems when I finally first got an smp capable system, they may have solved everything by then, but my word did creative labs' drivers cause the world problems.

Quake4's smp support was more commonly on but it would crash tons with Creative.

I guess it's the kind of thing where unless it specifically introduces game bugs if the only problem is crashing, they might let you take that choice for yourself with a new release.

Loadouts arent that bad at all especially when u want to play railwhore or LGonly without botherin to think a lot. Just there should be both loadout and non-loadout servers. Since tier system never rly worked for ffa guess its also a good approach to have both of two worlds like servers with loudouts for noobs and servers with normal setup for experienced players and those who want to progress.

I agree that loadouts are not the worst change at all, but I wonder if the reasoning for them was exactly right.

It feels more like aim practice mode especially with universal ammo crates so those go well together, without it it's a bit more strategic, but you can't or shouldn't say one of them is good the other bad.

Having both loadouts and universal ammo boxes in FFA makes it even spammier and more brainless than it already was (not knocking it, I play FFA pretty much exclusively, I enjoy it). I'm down with one or the other, but having both just sucks.

1)cvar options to allow seeing other players fov/zoomfov/crosshair settings/etc. - Would be cool to see more accurately how other players are actually playing.

2)cg_predictLocalHitbeeps - I know false positives are possible but presently as your ping increases your hitbeeps become more and more delayed which completely throws off your accuracy especially with LG.

3)ability to add/invite friends directly from a game rather than having to back out and goto the recent competitors page.

Ladder for duel

With a good and solid system : based on Elo but all automatic.

You would have a map pool of 10 of the 15 best duel maps with a turn over every 2 months, based on a vote every season ending (vote for 2 maps out and 2 maps in, so there's a "forced" turnover). You could ban 5 out of the 10 maps (because map knowledge is primordial in quake).

Then just click the tasty "play a ladder game" button and it searches an even matchup (+/- 80 elo). If you leave you get a loose.

After the first game both players can simply leave or if they enjoyed the match or want to get/give revenge, check a "bo3" or "bo5" button and then commit to a complete match. The next map is then chosen by the looser of the precedent match (the map pool being the remaining maps of both players considering their bans settings at that time).

Your portrait would have an icon on the top right indicating your league, leagues which would have custom good old quaky names ("I can win league" for 1200 and below, "hurt me plenty league" for 1200 - 1400, "hardcore league" 1400 -1700, "hell league" 1700 - 2000, "nightmare league" 2000 - 2300 "godmode league" 2300 +).

Up to you to warm up or train a specific map on a non ladder custom server.

It's a little bit awkward. If you jump as you go through the tele you overshoot every time. If you wait until you're through it's easy to fit 2 strafes in. It's also CJ distance, but something about the opening makes the setup kind of tricky for me.

And yes, you can go from LG to RL, but not quite like what I've seen in Quake 4. I've never actually played Q4 though, so take that with a grain of salt. You lose a bit of speed as you go up, whereas in Quake 4 people looked like they "flew" up ramps a bit more.

In Q4 you can get a lot of height off of jumps like that unlike QL so I was curious if it would work. Its quite a nice movement system. A good balance between QL and CPM speeds

I agree with the ability to add bots to a multiplayer match at least to warmup. CTF in NA has been a bit dead lately and it would be nice to start a server with some bots to just play around for a bit until other players arrive. I wouldn't necessarily want them in a game as the AI isn't competitive but it would be great for some initial target practice while getting a server going or adjusting to a different ping depending on location of the server (i.e. Texas vs Chicago)

You probably know the explosions are a balancing thing? You can easily say it's intentional that you can't see through plasma spam, which I feel is great cause this way you have hopes of saving yourself when exposed to multiple railers at a distance.

Less gametypes? Disagree. They've already addressed the question of finding players somewhat by introducing the variety pack/team mode servers and I think going in this direction is right.

The match browser and main menus are rendered using Awesomium, which means that yes they are HTML docs. It's a pretty easy and convenient way to build menus. Is it really so much of a performance problem for some people?

Also after this long there are no doubt people who would cry over recolouring Uriel.

Some of the things posted above what I won't repeat, plus:

- Support for community made translations (Steam workshop perhaps if it really goes Steam only).
And please let's not start with the concerns about stupid trolls who will translate inappropriate words and whatnot, those can be corrected/removed later, but a lot of people around the world (especially in Asia and South America) simply doesn't speak English and won't play a game what he can't even understand.
We need more players, and language support should have been there from day one to help with that.

- Also some well made video tutorials for the newcomers, easily accessible from the game (the one what 2dg made - and removed - about strafe jumping on the practice map was really good imo, so community made ones would be fine)

- Do not, (I repeat) do not ever put beginners and newcomers into top tier or pro spawned servers, even if there are no other servers populated.
I'm pretty sure that this practice (which is still going on on a daily basis) is one of the main reasons why beginners do not stay with the game.... If you can't determine the skill, just ask about it as a last resort, but never ever put new people onto servers where Quakers jumping around with 700+ups and 15 years of fragging experience...... pretty please.

I think the game should emphasize what's good for new players (CA, loadout FFA, Domination, insta modes) and recommend them for new players instead of offering stuff like Duel or TDM as valid choices. TDM as a public server mode is the least viable surely? Without actual strategies and teamplay it becomes FFA but not everyone is green. FFA with items is the next step from those and maybe CTF after that?

The following are a few ideas I'd like to see implemented into Quake Live in some shape or form. The developers may be humored by the ambition, and impossibility, of some of them.

1.) An in-game e-mail system.

2.) The ability to restrict spectator slots on a server. For example: out of the sixteen available slots on a duel-server four may be reserved for players, and the remainder for spectators.

3.) In-game ladders for duel.
i.) Each geographical region has its own ladder.
ii.) Ranking within the ladder degrades with inactivity.
iii.) Ladder map-pools are specific, and change seasonally.
iv.) Ladder-matches are organized by an automated system that pairs players up according to similar rank, and randomly decides a map to be played from the current map-pool.
v.) Ladder-matches can be freely spectated whilst in progress.
vi.) The demos of ladder-matches are automatically uploaded to a repository where they are kept for one season and freely accessed.

4.) Tournament servers for duel akin to what was found in Quake 4.
i.) The server would have a register of participants. Registered players would be sent an in-game e-mail with the date and time of the tournament once registered. On the day of the tournament, and nearing the start, registered players would be sent an in-game e-mail to connect to the relevant server within x minutes to avoid disqualification. Once all qualified participants are connected to the relevant server the tournament would begin.
ii.) The ability to restrict tournament registration by:
a) players' region,
b) players' in-game rank,
c) and a player ban-list.
iii.) The demos off all matches played during the tournament would be automatically saved to the server and freely accessed. (Demos would be flushed at the start of a new tournament.)

4.) In-game voice communication.
i.) An option to mute/unmute players' voice communication.

5.) A list of online-players, separated by geographical region.
i.) An option to opt out of being listed as online.

6.) In-game currency.
i.) In-game currency can be won/lost by winning/losing ladder-matches.
ii.) In-game currency can be used to bet on matches.
iii.) In-game currency can be used as a wager between the participants of non-ladder-matches.
iv.) In-game currency can be freely given to other players.
v.) In-game currency can be redeemed for in-game items. (?)

7.) A player queue for Clan Arena.

8.) Players are fined in-game currency for leaving an unfinished match.
i.) Server-owners should have the authority to enable/disable the issuing of fines.

9.) Before a duel starts, spectators should be able to see:
a.) the two players' rankings,
b.) how many times the two players have played each other on the loaded-map, and their win ratios.
i.) Spectators should be able to choose whether or not they see this information.

10.) Spectators should be able to see the probability of both players success during a duel encounter. E.g. player 1's stack is 200/50, player 2's stack is 100/150. Both players equip the LG. Player 1's LG accuracy is 24%, player 2's 25%. Both players can receive 41 cells of LG before being fragged. The LG fires 20 cells per second, so player 1 can fire 41 cells in 8.5 seconds based on his accuracy of 24%, and player 2 and fire 41 cells in 8.2 seconds based on his accuracy of 25%. Therefore the odds are slightly in player 2s favour, and this can be displayed to spectators, whilst continually being updated as the encounter plays out.
i.) Spectators should be able to choose whether or not they see this information.

11.) Wall-hacks for spectators.
i.) Spectators should be able to choose whether or not they see this information.

12.) A method for sharing player configs in-game.

13.) Duel-servers with an option for quick ends. No post-game scoreboard or voting screen would be shown. The game just ends, and the map is reset. Would be useful for practice games and prevent the improper use of /abort. The function could be toggled with a vote: /callvote quickend on/callvote quickend off.

14.) Elements of the spec-hud should be slightly tinged either blue or red depending on the team you're spectating (the main element I'm thinking of for this treatment is the black backdrop for the ammo icons). I bring this up, because during Quakecon 2015 it wasn't clear which team you were spectating during the team games. Simple tinging with the relevant colour (red for when you spec a red-team member, and blue for when you spec a blue-team member) should alleviate any confusion.

Next to the 'invite friend' on player profile the 'report player' should be.

Not sure if posted already, but MVD (Multi view demos) , so I can record one demo vith multiple POV, some mods for Quake 3 had this option, so I guess it is not that hard to implement it.

Recording makes one huge demo with all playing clients on server (while watching you can change and spectate everyone you like, like in real game).

In Quake 3 Excessive Plus mod, MVDs can be recorded only while spectating and when MVDs are allowed by server.

1) Actual matchmaking. At least to the level of LOL, if it works there then it shouldn't be an excuse for it to not work in QL.

2) Better GFX: We need this because kids are fucking stupid and wouldn't shut the fuck up on Twitch about how the game looks like it's for the 90's or some shit. So higher res textures, bump mapping, and higher polycount on the maps and models WHILE keeping it 1:1 (that's the actual clipping of the maps stay the same). Enemy ragdoll physics for the corpses so they don't look dumb when they die in the middle of stairs or keep floating at a ledge. This is not tolerable for millenials on a fps.

3) Default announcer must be the vadrigar one again. Why in hell is it the silly sounding vegeta one instead of the vadrigar one? Im tired of telling all of my friends to switching to the vadrigar one each time they start playing if I get new players in.

4) Custom content. Let people run their own servers like on the good ol times, let people play any map, custom or official, let people experiment, regardless of standard or pro. Find another business model, this clearly not only failed but hindered the game tremendously. I would keep playing my pro subscription if it let me host servers. Maybe limit models and skins depending on pro subscription, which are unlockeable with experience points or with paying. Whatever you do, don't ruin it for the rest of us by disabling r_forceenemyskin or similar Reflex dumb shit workarounds. Let people choose. Whoever cares about that is probably noobs and don't even know that cvar anyway.

5) Avoid failing the modern time gimmicks such as GUI timers, even tho I would be positive about having GUI timers when both players in a duel are ranked as newbies. Newbies must be aware that timing is a thing. Newbies have no fucking idea of the importance of timing, unfortunately, so we must show them. After newbie phase is over, GUI timers are off and you play like a man aka no timers.

6) Different cvars depending on the map that automatically change. Because the new maps ruined the fun for anyone playing with r_mapoverbrightbits 5 + r_vertexlightning 1 at default r_mapoverbrightbitcap value, now you have to fuck around with the r_mapoverbrightbitcap value each time you vote a different map because the new maps for some reason, are bright as hell on the default 255 value. For example to play the new bloodrun which i hope goes away soon, I had to cut in half the r_mapoverbrightbitcap value. Doing this everytime + vid_restart depending on the map is a total vibe killer and generally annoying.

1) unless they can give this via Steam's systems, don't see this happening.

2) You're talking an engine rewrite here, not happening in an old game keep waiting on a new one.
Though I have a vague recollection that Q3 at some point added support for skeleton model formats (edit: yup, see here ), but no one ever did anything with it, it requires models to be rigged, maybe all the old hand animations redone, and the QL team doesn't have an animator/3d artist (or even a 2d one...)

3) Which voice over is default isn't really going to influence new players at all, they're not pre-biased by having played with the old voice.

4) Steam Workshop support has already been mentioned as coming with the steam exclusive version.

5) I don't see the pie charts disappearing from the non classic modes, but they're not going to bring in HUD timers for sure if that's what you're worried about, and classic modes still exist (and will be way more common I'd imagine once the steam exclusive version is out)

6) Really don't see custom cvars added to handle total fringe case users. + they did a lot of work already on redoing the light levels on maps, but not all of the changed maps have been released yet due to bandwidth costs, so the likelihood is your problem may have already been fixed.

Btw, we should have a QLRanks page, a page like Lolkings, the game just needs a game with stats of the players, it motivates you to become better and be more competitive and less lazy.

2) I don't think that requires an engine rewrite. QL engine is already an improved engine from Q3, it could deal with higher res textures and higher polycount on the maps and models to say the least. But yes I would like an actual rewrite of the engine IF the physics and overall feel remained 1:1, anything else than this is death.

3) The voice that is now selected objectively sucks and it's out of place on a game that is some alien bloodbath-robots-weird motherfuckers arena. I remember the original announcer sounded so cool and menacing the first time I hear it, it sets you in the mood to enter the portal and begin combat. The current voice is just annoying.

4) This is great, but will the non-pros be able to vote and play any custom maps? where are the lines set there? what is the level of modification that you can do? I think its KEY that this can be done for free. Sometimes games gain viral fame because dumb bass modes and weird maps. Maybe something unexpected makes the game go viral.

1) Last I saw publicly sponge has said it was completely non trivial and even if they were able to try hire someone to do it, they didn't have a clue who would have the slightest clue how to do it.

2) bump mapping would need relatively major engine work. Higher rez textures would need many months (8+ at a guess) of 2d work, higher poly maps would need many months of mapping work and would probably crush the current engine, also if you happen to be playing with r_subdivisions 4 then perhaps you've forgotten it does look a lot smother by default.

3) I think you're confusing objective and subjective and aren't even recognising your own bias, but that's my subjective opinion. Plenty of people have expressed that they like the new announcer. I'm genuinely not sure which of the two I really prefer any more, the female one is definitely too weird for me after so many years with a male voice. The new one is definitely better for clarity which is a big plus for many non native English speakers.

1) Sirax wrote an implementation of MS's TrueSkill, that doesn't mean he'd be any good at writing his own matchmaking system, or any interest in leaving his current job.

2) That's nice work, on one texture, that's a fairly simple metal part... mostly hugely helped by higher resolution normal maps that the doom3 engine supports.

Communities often produce awesome things because they have more manpower than any company, they're highly motivated, and have much much longer to do the work. Having said that I'm not too impressed with the HD packs I've seen for Q3A.

There's a small possibility they could buy texture sets, but only if they could be sure it's coming from someone that does actually own all the rights to it (same issues as new maps).
And that also wouldn't cover a lot of newer textures.

The companies that release free HD texture packs for their games either had those art assets already at that resolution (or greater) from when they were produced, but had reduced the resolution for performance/size reasons before the original release.
Or they had buckets of cash still from successful sales, and could do the work within a reasonable time frame of the game being popular/hyped/within media spotlight so could rely on making a good return on the investment.

Generally though, I just don't think it makes enough of a difference at all with a game like QL to warrant that investment, not without other significant work on the engine... and then we're back to new game territory :



Don't get me wrong, I would *love* to see a shiny new classic Quake Live that somehow still magically ran at 250fps on a reasonable machine, but I just don't think it's reasonable at all to expect it from anything other than an entirely new game.

Well, no, because as I originally suggested in my very first point 1 response, it might be possible at some point with things Steam provides

- Port some of the Quake 2 and QuakeWorld maps !!

- In game pickup system. The way pickup works in IRC is awesome, there should be an integrated pickup system with proper ranking for balance purpose.

- Ladders (accuracy, victories, ELO, whatever)

- No loadouts, but universal ammo box option may stay for noob-friendly servers.

- Gibs (preferably free... but I'd buy it anyway if the new blood is properly done).

- Proper tutorials for the noobs to be aware of everything important (timing, rocket jumps, circle jumps, weapons mastery, etc.).

- A cvar that allows the user to chose the color of the wall / floor of the map. Like, r_maptexturecolor or something, to be able to play with greyish, bluish, redish, greenish maps and have good visibility in all cases.

- Some way to make money so that QL becomes the most successful game ever and id can invest in some advertising all over the world and corrupt some lousy promoter or politicians that will make the game an official national sport :p.

They should do away with war by having every country put forth their best Quake player to hash out squabbles.
I'd go even further, Every four years a world wide quake tourney to decide which country rules the world for the next 4 years.

No idea. Maybe theres some pocket of Q4 players out there or something. Either way, adding more server options to QL improves the game.

I will be able to cancel my Q4 server and host a QL buttslide server for duelling friends. I've never had the pleasure of playing buttslide ctf so I'll see if I can get games of that going too

I prefer the old system. A dedicated server can either make up its own stats website database, or opt to be included in a larger stat database (if supported).

So there is no dead end to competitive servers regardless of game settings. QL is the only quake so far that centralized the stats to specific game mods and server settings.

Edit: gametracker has stats tracking system for servers, why couldn't ql support this feature?

I hate this attitude, oh we are gonna introduce this cool new feature, but pro players might hate it, so we will put it as UNRANKED where NO ONE will play it, and it will die a slow death.


I mean, how many casual players know that there is a *double jump* (or was it called different) option, where you can jump from nades to shotgun on ZTN, or from one side to another on Almost Lost? Ill say less than 1%.

If only the game provided a neat eye catching demo section showing off tricks in the game. Somehow the physics need to be forced into the periphery of a newcomer.

Real matchmaking, what the fuck is wrong with the devs? How can you NOT have a MM system? No matter what you do with the game, a lack of a skill based MM system will cause it to die.
A lot of people play CS:GO to rank up. If this was in Quake Live a lot more people would have an incentive to keep playing.
