As stated on bethblog.com, id Software is set to open new offices in Frankfurt, Germany:

As part of our continued global expansion, ZeniMax Media has opened (and is actively hiring for) a new technology development studio in Frankfurt – home to our German publishing operations. This team, an extension of id Software, will focus their efforts on idTech for DOOM and other titles under development at ZeniMax-owned studios.

My understanding, based mostly on rumors, is that they hired some high caliber people to keep tech dev. I know little about them, and I don't know if they have the same affection for responsiveness etc.

Well he's not a big loss in terms of design although I do remember something along the lines of him wanting to make the player feel like a badass :)

Hopefully they work to create a snappy responsive feeling over the sluggishness with something like the Unity engine or the good but too smooth Unreal. It's all preference I guess. One thing I like about id tech 3 is its consistency.

I've got around 5-6 Unity engine games and none of them are convincing in terms of mouse response. Having said that, although all of them are first person games, none of them are dedicated mp shooters. I presume if you can code then you can transplant a new input system in there. For getting indie developers creating interesting games it really is fantastic however.

Yeah, I'm using it for all my prototypes. It's really great when it comes to testing ideas quickly, and even get to a certain level of polish. I'm hearing great stuff about UE as well, with blueprints, but I never tried it myself.

Unity CAN be the fastest and the most reponsove in terms of mouse input. Developers can directly read it every frame and set player controller / camera rotation in the most straightforward manner possible.

Most devs just don't care and read input in fixed update running at 60 times per secont and intended for physics calculations. That's why mouse feels sluggish in such games.

Well, Input.Axis() is the straightest way possible.

BUT! Be warned that mouse axes are smoothed by default, which adds to sluggishness. You can fine tune them in the input settings (Mouse X and Mouse Y), max out 'Gravity' property, put 'Dead' to 0.

And also yeah, don't read mouse in fixed update, read it in general update instead. Camera / character controller rotation shouldn't affect rigidbody simulation, so you should put mouse input directly into frame update loop, but movement (keyboard input) should be tied to fixed update. If you want more responsive movement, just change fixed update timing from 0.0166667 to 0.008333 for example.

You can develop anything u want. You just can't sell it here until some publisher has the guts for a lawsuit to declare video games art. Which they would most likely win, as films are considered art too and I can't remember them taking out any of those swastikas from the Indy films in Germany.

Guess what; it originates from Germany.

If you only ever tasted a regular Weizen or some Beck's pilsner shit, that's your own fault. German beer is incredibly versatile, including a long tradition of brewing multiple types of strong Bock beers.
