Agreed. Excellent movie. It's an orgy of crashes, explosions, and people falling off of vehicles at high speeds in slow mo. Amazingly well done and imagined. Definitely a lot more like Road Warrior than the other two movies (which is a good thing).

Tied with Ex Machina for best movie of the year so far.

Nah. There's actually more of a plot to Mad Max, characters are interesting and not 2-dimensional (with a good bit of development), and it's not melodramatic in the slightest. It also has this weirdly dark playfulness to it (doesn't take itself too seriously like 300).

Which characters? lol it's exactly what Venser said, constant action with little else. Max has as much depth as the lizzard in the first scene, and Furiosa has as much story as they fit on a post it note.

It's not a drama. If you want 100% character, then you're not going to find it in an action movie like this. But as far as the genre goes, this movie has more interesting characters than shitty action flicks like Taken, Expendables, etc..

Furiosa, Max, and others are interesting because they do not act in predictable ways. Max is borderline anti-hero at the start, trying to abandon the brides and Furiosa as soon as he has a moment. But Furiosa makes an opportunity (with the killswitch) to save not only herself but the brides. Nux, also, has a revelation that his short life isn't just for the glory of someone else (Immortum Joe) but that there's more to life.

I'm not saying the new Mad Max is a new Citizen Kane. But as far as action movies go, it's really fucking good.

you basically saw it twice already, since they decide to drive back the exact same way they came from in the middle of the film.

this was the best action movie of this decade, the best action flick I have seen since matrix. There is a whole lot of dynamism in the movie, keeps you on the edge. This 70 year old australian director puts the hollywood action to shame and shows how uncreative those movies have become.

Why is Fury Road outright bad? If you're trying to compare it to something it's not -- like an epic, classic drama -- you're obviously not going to see it's great qualities. But as a no frills action extravaganza, it oozes style, a superb production, and well developed characters and setting. It's probably one of the best action movies to come out in a while (along with Dredd).

It's getting a lot of praise for being just a run of the mill action movie. It's okay for what it is, but let's not overplay that fact please.

Can't remember the last "run of the mill" action movie that had a fascinating cast of characters, strange world, spectacular stunts that were largely real and not CGI, and no cliche bullshit that Hollywood execs typically require in a movie with this kind of budget.

If you think this is just another Expendables/Taken/Transporter type movie that doesn't care about a coherent and interesting story, I can't disagree more.

There are moments throughout that are definitely reminiscent of Sergio Leone and Akira Kurosawa flicks. Opening has minimal protagonist intro, he's taken hostage, and the audience is immediately along for the ride as the world is revealed through action and not dull exposition. Fistful Of Dollars is one of my all time favs and this movie reminded me of it repeatedly. Or the scene where Max goes into fog -- no real "action" is shown but only alluded to is straight up Kurosawan (particularly in Seven Samurai when Kyūzō goes on a night time raid of the enemy encampment).

Fascinating characters? Our main antagonist, Mr. Immortan Joe keeps a flock of girls just for his own personal breeding machines, but our main protagonist (which is Furiosa, not Max) is a beautiful female who was captured in an attack by Immortan Joe's people and later becomes... not one of his breeders but... his most trusted soldier. In a hyper masculine culture. As a prisoner. After her mother was killed. So with zero support system, nobody to back her, big Immortan Joe, the coldest cruelest villan of them all, the guy who trains young boys to become essentially Jihads for Valhalla (lol) let's her become a warrior too. Instead of just fucking her senseless. Okay, so she was young when she was captured. Not prime fucking material. Fair enough. But a prisoner, a female one, in previously stated hyper masculine warrior culture beneath Joe, becomes top dawg. With zero explanation towards her rise in stature in the organization. Cool, very interesting. Totally.

And big bad Max, oh boy. He was a good man until civilization collapsed, then he lost his family, or tribe, or group, I don't really know, because of... something? He fucked up I guess. Now he's haunted by those memories. So he's a hard ass on the outside, but a good guy on the inside. Revolutionary concept.

First of all, this movie only seems run of the mill because this series influenced all of the movies that became run of the mill.

Second, you need to realize that in the format of the series, Mad Max is just a vessel into this insane world. He was only the main character in the first movie. The first movie starts with society falling apart and the main turning point for Max going Mad is his family being killed. The movies don't really follow continuity, Max gets thrown into a situation, helps save the day, and then just leaves. The purpose of the flashbacks is entirely to give the character motivation and emotional depth. Obviously not a whole lot, but the bare minimum necessary for you to understand him as a character.

Third, about Furiosa. She wasn't running around freely, Joe was in control of Gas Town as well. She wasn't top dawg, she just drove a big truck. The reason she could do this was because all of the surrounding areas are full of danger. Even though she worked out a deal (to Joe's dismay) with the motorcycle gang, it just about backfired on her. Joe had no reason to suspect she would try anything as ridiculous as that, but she did something drastic because she was on the verge of losing all hope. She snapped.

The characters are fascinating, but not deep. They're very bare bone because that's all you need for the story and themes to work. The movie never stops for exposition, you learn about the characters and their motivation through their actions. It's a simple movie, but the strong point is that every detail in the movie means something. It's not action for the sake of action. The momentum of the action keeps the story moving. It's just one of four glimpses into this Mad world.

Details, man! So many minor little details all add up as well.

Even if everything I said was wrong, it's a very long, spectacular action scene which is hopefully executed enough to overhaul the action movie industry because it has completely sucked for just about 20 years. There's SO MUCH movement in these action scenes, but it's still completely coherent and not nauseating... As opposed to movies like The Bourne Identity where I'm looking at a close-up of a door handle and the camera has to twitch harder than davis if he upped his sensitivity.

for as much of an elitist you are about prty much everything for you to like this is rather shocking. i'm just gonna chock it up to me not liking the Mad Max way of action movies and move on.

I'm not elitist by any means. You should be able to recognize this by the fact that I really like 99% of all music you've ever sent me, and even if I don't like it, I don't call it bad.

Let me ask you though, do you disagree with any of the points I've raised? And what are some action movies you like, especially recently.

Here's how I look at things in order of importance:
1) What is the artist's intention and how well does the message/theme come across (I don't mean how blatant the theme is, but once you understand it, how impactful is it)
2) What do I get out of it
3) Is it the first to do what it is doing
4) Is it so good or so bad that it left any impression on me

If it's any of those 4, I like it. Basically, if it's anything but boring, or has a bad message, I'll like it on some level.

Mad Max is most 2/4 with a little bit of 1, and it's 3 in the sense that Miller is returning to show the kids how to make a real action movie.

A character should be more than their backstory. I thought the way not just Furisoa and Max behaved, but Nux, the brides, and others was interesting and complex. They weren't predictable or cliched characters. Max, at one part of the of the movie, tells Furisoa that hope is dangerous. He's not an anti-hero, but he's clearly not the cliche hero who, against all odds, makes everything right in the world.

As much I dislike feminist I didnt got any feminist message from the film. I really enjoyed it

If it's any kind of feminist message it's the kind that isn't just thinly veiled misandry.

Actually all the bad guy's slaves are male except for the few milk cows and the hot models (typical Hollywood sexual objectification, not very feminist) who are brainless sheep and don't even want to be "rescued" by the only thinking woman under 70 (because, let's face it, they live in a paradise thanks to their looks even though they have no brains - pretty realistic!)

If anything, the movie's story is utopian communist. Somehow the land's ruler and his crew (hence by definition - bad guys) has, in the middle of a desert, infinite amount of water which for dramatic effect he pumps way higher than he needs to get pressure, which he does using obviously infinite amount of energy available to him. He could give this infinite water to the people but he doesn't, only to control them!

This reminds me of other idiotic communist stories where an upper class having infinite resources keeps some low class miserable for no reason at all: Snowpiercer (spoiler: bad guy needs those poor people to produce little boys, just like Mad Max's bad guy needs them to produce hot models) and Elysium (spoiler: those guys had millions of medical spaceships with infinite power to cure billions on Earth, it wasn't even explained why they needed everyone sick, they were just evil).

Unlikes those crap movies though, Mad Max wasn't serious about its "story", not really pretending it's anything more than a porn script (completely unrealistic things happening only to excuse filming the action scene which is 20x longer). 10/10 for the constant action and the battle guitar guy!

98 % constant action, BLAM, WOOSH, SKREE, POW, 2 % anything else.

guess the action was too much for her. to be honest i wouldnt watch movies like that on a regular basis either, but i cannot remember havin seen such well paced constant action ever. there was just no pause in the movie and still it didnt get tiring ever.

Don't really give a shit bout feminist propaganda, but this ain't mad max period. It's an semi enjoable post-fallout flick, but I'd rather watch the original 3 movies 60 times as one more time this action garbage that someone decided to name Mad Max, could very well be named Rage by id software. Again, our supposed hero Max has a side role to every one in this movie, even the fuckin lizard and beatle.

And IF you are entertained by watching a bomb on a pole expload for the 405th time on a car, you might enjoy this movie, to me it's lazy as fuck on top od not being a Mad Max movie.
