Evangellion movies?

Is watching the series a requirement to understand the movies?
If not I'll check them out.

the anime series is not for everyone maybe(although certainly popular!) but this one I think surpassed everything available regarding the character and stories.

edit: just realized with all the live action movies etc its hard to see which one this imdb page actually refers to. its the 4 part mini series that make up one movie of the beginning of the story and is much more serious then the long running tv series.

Kenshin OVA1 (as this is) truelly is the best 2 hours of anime ever created. (the 4 part mini series)

Don't bother downloading the 2nd ova, the series is okish... But they pale to the the OVA1.
Also I would like you to watch it in Japanese as imo the general English translation is good... but it doesn't have the same 'darkness' to it.
It's like the current QL (English translation) compared to the Q3 (Japanese version) voice over...

(btw if you do feel the need to, like me, watch the series then plz stop after the fight vs Sisho Makoto. It's not the same anymore if you continue to watch)

I don't care for anime. Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal transcends anime. It's a masterpiece and worthy of all the praise it receives.

I did watch a bit after shishio makoto but I noticed they just dragged it along and the real story was finished so I just dropped it.


I still rewatch it up to the end of the shishio ark once every few years!

I actually first saw the a few episodes of the anime... Then the ova. Followed by the movie. Followed by the rest of the episodes. Followed by the 2nd ova.
Back then I could do that in a week or 2 haha :D

The only one semi worth watching is the one where they face Broly for the first time. And perhaps (if you like that one) the Tree of Life.... But even those 2 are very highly doubtful.

Resurrection of Frieza should be out this year. Seems Frieza also achieves God level.

There's really nothing there for anyone who isn't a Dragonball fan, they're not good movies for anyone else. I liked Battle of the Gods, it's got the perfect tone for a Dragonball movie, not particularly serious, major nostalgia factor from obscure character appearances and references. For anyone who isn't extremely familiar with Dragonball I reckon it would seem total shit.

DBZ was one of my earlier anime series as well. And I thought it was cool etc.
Until I watched actual anime.

DBZ does not come close to good series. And the movies pale in comparison to good movies as well.

They are, i liked the movie about Broly and the (OAV ? ) about Bardock, father of Goku, there are two OAVs about the father of goku.

Some of the others are good too, like the one in which he faces cooler or the history of trunks etc...

yeh that explains, if you didnt enjoy watching DBZ, you will never like the movies, movies are related to the anime and explains some of the back story of certain characters. if you didnt like DBZ, you wont find the movies intresting...

Say that you never do any sports and stay inside a lot... And someone introduces you to sports fishing.
Chances are that you actually enjoy it as a sport.
But when you try some other sports you discover that they are very different and that something might have your preference.

DBZ is the sports fishing of anime. It is extremely boring compared to other anime.

I'm not such a anime fanboy to begin with, so you may have watched that already. I think I only have a notch above average knowledge about anime in general, though, I think I could contribute.

Regarding the aforementioned statement, I would advise you:

- The old Berserk anime (+ the manga which is $$$$$)
- Sword of the stranger
- Elfen lied anime (manga is $$$)
- Vampire Hunter D - bloodlust
- Grave of the Fireflies

and maybe "All you need is kill" (the manga), the manga that inspired that tom cruise movie released recently: edge of tomorrow

Rest of what I could advise, you saw it already (Gantz, all the ghost in the shell content, Ninja Scroll)

Aldnoah.Zero. Mecha anime that started started last year and I'm really enjoying it. I believe it's only going to be 24 episodes, so it's just about complete with only 5 episodes left to air.

these two other suggestions may be biased because they were my absolute favorite shows in my childhood (alongside DBZ), i know they were a hit in latin america and some european countries like France and Spain but not known in USA, maybe someone who watched these recently can support me here:

- Captain Tsubasa (the old one!!! plus the world cup OVA and captain tsubasa J ... skip the 2002 remake, it was not good) ... edit: just noticed you are american so probably won't like this one as it is football based and you guys like handegg :P

-Saint Seiya: the original run is amazing, the hades chapter is amazing, haven't watched the spin off omega, and the spin off called Lost Canvas is also great though i haven't watch it complete yet. This show has the best soundtrack ever IMO, if you are into that.

Edit: i noticed you are from USA and have watched anime in Cartoon Network, based on some youtube videos i noticed they dub the shows and change the music, i encourage you to download anime in their original language subbed, the dubbing butchers the show IMO.

I usually watch the original versions. Unless I'm tired and don't feel like reading along.

CLANNAD starts like a light school life & mild comedy series. The unsuspecting viewer have no idea what he started to watch.
Then you proceed, episode after episode, romance blooms, it gets bittersweet slowly and when you finished the 2nd season, it's one of the most fucking heartwrenching drama / tragedy experience you can have by watching media.

I need to watch both Ghost in The Shell and AKIRA personally.

Probably all of these have been mentioned by now, but among my favorites are Elfen Lied, Samurai Champloo (recently seen this after not watching any anime for years, very easy and enjoyable watch), Cowboy Bebop, Trust and Betrayal, Akira, Fullmetal Alchemist.

Other stuff that I really liked includes Spirited Away, totoro, 5cm per second, death note.

I've seen all of em' but Elfin Lied. Heard it was good though.

DB Super is getting better (the animation is a lot better than it once was)

Unfortunately though it's still plagued with space magic and power levels being bullshit.

Man I love DB as much as you probably, and I will always follow the series, but lets not kid ourselves, its not a mentionworthy anime, it has a very specific niche and theres so much flaws with the show that you really have to love it in order to enjoy it
