theres a much more recent keynote from Carmack somewhere.
Dunno about the other guy but if you never watch talks over an hour.... Then you're missing out on a lot of things.
(although it's unclear if you also do not watch 'talks' where multiple people discuss things with eachother... as most vids over an hour are done by multiple people.
A lot of interresting talks are around an hour or so which is also unclear if you do watch those.)

I watch stuff in the region of 1 hour i.e. lectures on specific areas

That Don Marinelli looks insanely much like The Big Lebowsky.... It's scary.

after seeing it I wouldn't really say that it's the "best ever".
It's a good combination of fun and global views on education.

But theres not really anything that I would've said that I learned from this other than having to chase dreams.

Why would him being a good person who suffered an unfortunate illness have anything to do with the quality of ones talk?
It might influence the topic of the talk and the emotional tone of the talk, but those are (in general) seperate from the quality.

Shit happens. Just like when you watch a talent show & hear a touching story you're more likely to cry during the song whereas otherwise you'd just think "oh, good singer"

You should be able to seperate the sad story from the performace. Otherwise it doesn't really make sense from a "talent" point of view.

Ofcourse you might want someone to do good when he/she is a nice person. Which too is unrelated to the actual quality.

A good performance of a song is not done purely because the singer is familliar with the situation.
I am sure that that Freddy Mercury actually never killed a man and talked to his mother about it in order to sing Bohemian Rhapsody.

Just like a talk about how to live life is not "done better" because someone is terminally ill. Ofcourse people who are terminally ill might give this topic more thought than others which can increase quality.
But all in all it was a decent talk but I wouldn't say it's near the best ever.

There's absolutely no content, the guy just bring random goodies around and wave them around to make sure he has the attention of everybody including the kids with A.D.D

If it is really the only speech of this length you have watched, it is kind of sad lol :P

The one he gave for the Oculus Rift convention was interesting/entertaining. Though I think Abrash gives the more inspiring, vision-type talks on OR stuff.

Well.....
Abrash: Before Carmack offered me a job (at id) he talked for a few hours about his view of the future. In which people could build and walk in and out of online worlds.
Carmack might not be too inspiring to people who don't have similar views. But I would say that Carmack did and does a lot more.
