Wow - I thought Xonotic went kinda... offline. Is any development in the works?

Last I heard they plan to introduce an LG in the next release. No idea how far away that is but I want it bad

It's still being developed, the devs are just not very talkative. Beside of that, the weapon balance has been optimized towards competitive play for this cup (if you want to try that, look for "reversion cup" servers in the server list). In short that means that it became less spammy and more rewarding if you hit a good shot. To me, as someone who can't stand spammy waterguns and who likes it if a weapon actually destroys the enemy, the game feels very solid now. It definitely has been improved during the past 2 years, even if the changes are not all visible on the first sight.

For some reason the forum isnt loading for me, but I think the last time I looked at the thread for this event someone said something about reversion balance being similar to 0.6, is that true?

The dev who had been working on a complete new weapon balance, including introducing a lg and a new ammo system, left the Xonotic project to launch his own company. So the game got stuck somewhere between 0.7 and 0.8, with many things being unfinished and unpolished. And as that unfinished version had not been popular among competitive players, we decided to go back to a version that worked well and optimize it. As the 0.7 release version in general was good, we took it and changed certain things such as lowering the switch delay of the nexgun (railgun), undoing the nerfing of some weapons and reducing the splash radius of spam weapons. In short, we took the 0.7 balance and reverted certain settings to what had been better in 0.6 and balanced it with the rest.

tl;dr
The reversion cup uses the 0.7 balance with nerfing of weapons being undone + a couple of tweaks to make it all coherent.

Some heads up of for people unaware of Xonotic: It's a game that is a bit faster than QL, but not as fast as cpm (both in movement and weapon switch). It features secondary fire modes like Unreal. It is the direct successor of Nexuiz Classic (previously Nexuiz), but have since then gone through some severe improvements in gameplay and graphics.

xonotic is probably the most under-rated game ever, I played it for some months and I must say I loved it, extremely fast gameplay and smooth engine. It has some really nice ideas like the curved rockets or even the jump gun (don't remember the name :D). Unfortunately I think it's not really gonna take off competitively though :/ gl to all and looking forward to watch some matches =) (hi thimo!)

I hope it gets on steam and gets some players. I doubt it could ever be huge but I'd be happy with 1 or 2 duel servers and some ctf (not minsta hook)

You can turn off most effects via the menu, but you can also try one of the presets:

exec effects-low.cfg
or
exec effects-omg.cfg

(and vid_restart ofc)

Other cvars you might be looking for are gl_picmip, gl_picmip_world (if you want picmip only on map textures) and r_dynamic (dynamic lightning).
