Tell me what's the point making a game, investing countless hours and money to it, which is clearly a Quake-wannabee, with advanced physics (aka CPM / CPM-like) and prolly no one's gonna play after like 2 months? The 17 CPMA players will stick to CPMA, newbs want instant gratification, headshots, hats and bumpmaplensflare. The arena shooter genre won't be saved and its community mostly will stay with whatever they played before. So what's the point really?

Fuck the newbs and their opinions, I'd be perfectly satisfied to have a kick ass game even with just 17 players.

There has already been at least one attempt, which failed, either because the guy bailed out or because matchmaking doesn't work without a squared fuckton of players....

It was Willgurht who did a Java implementation of a matchmaking system. The steps were basically

1. Register on site
2. Download java client
3. Enter matchmaking queue (i.e. press "find game")
4. Wait for system to find opponent...opponent found.
5. Server is spawned
6. ezQuake is launched
7. Both players enter server
8. Countdown starts and match is played
9. Match ends and result shows up on website

It worked quite well, at least the concept as such. He lost momentum due to irl stuff though and also changed implementation i think, ditching the java client for example. Think he wanted to put more parts of it in the existing server/client software instead of having players download additional stuff.

It would be really cool to carry on his work or do something similar, if only one would possess the Java/C/C++ coding skills. :F

With ezQuake (comes with distrib from nquake.com) you can join any server and minimize it. It will start flash in taskbar when someone connects.

BTW I wasn't trolling in that last post. I think that with these games the info about servers (where and who to play with) is as crucial as linking nquake. After all I'm pretty much a Q2 guy and understand how everything seems hidden to people that aren't really into the game.

I usually use http://qtv.quakeworld.nu to see what games are going on in case i want to observe or play (if i'm gonna play i copy/paste the address from the site, if observing then i press "Watch Now" and open with ezQuake-gl.exe).

However if i see no games are going on i join a server where i have good ping and then type ".qw 1on1 on Aerowalk here, any skill" in the console. This will broadcast the message along with the address to the server i'm on to a lot of QuakeWorld channels on IRC where players will see the message and usually join the server. The same way is used when gathering people for a 4on4 mix game for example.

Maybe you knew all this, but perhaps someone else doesn't. :)

Edit: There's also #qwrookie on Quakenet where we try to gather rookies.

It didnt for me and using nquake is terrible :) I wish i had a clean original q1 install and just ezquake(fuhquake) like i had back in the days. I get ocd from all the cmds and menus i need control of things :) If i add pak1 shit dosent even start so i guess you need an iso or something atleast.

I thought the problem might be because nquake only has pak0 (shareware) plus anything custom, so nquake wouldn't ship with the retail quake textures that the dm maps use... that's what I thought anyway. However I downloaded pak1 and didn't make a difference.

I have a few technical problems with QW, hope someone can help...

1. A few seconds after the game opens, it goes dark. After the map loads, it's bright for first 3 seconds then it goes dark again. Windowed it looks fine. This happens in Q2 and Q3 as well and the command r_ignorehwgamma fixes it. The weird thing is the map becomes brigh again after dying in lava or coming through some teleporters. But after loading next map it's dark again...

2. I use preset "faithful" ("originalquake" in console) but some maps are still pickmiped for some reason, while others are not. wtf

2. Iirc with nquake comes with an alternative, free pak with classic maps. These maps come without textures.
If you want these maps with textures, then you need original pak1.pak.

I guess that explains it since the maps have textures on the eye candy preset, which is ezquake default.
Another thing that happened a minute ago...

Afters some preset changing, game randomly changed aspect ratio or something and it's extremely narrow, kinda like fisheye lense. At first I thought the FOV changed but I checked and it stayed the same. Here's a screenshot of aerowalk. No idea how to fix it.

Set vid_conwidth and vid_conheight to values matching your aspect ratio.

What Sed said and *do not* use the built-in widescreen option, it only works for 16/10 ( and even then the conheight/width is still shady )

Custom res, custom conheight/conwidth that use the same ratio. Then you grab your 4/3 fov ( or ql fov ) and +10 it for 16/10, +15 it for 16/9.

QW would be sweet if they played 30 maps instead of 3 and if it had a crouch button :D (for advancement movement / speed stuff, not for crouching behind stuff!!)

Crouching is just like wallclipping, you don't need it if you're doing it right and for the rare cases you would actually need it you man up and deal with the fact you can't do that jump.

And only Australia deems ztn " unworthy of being played competitively " so it's 5 maps in the rest of the world
( and maybe 15 if you add Zimbabwe and Uzbekistan to Kenya )

It's either cl_gameclock 1 or hud_gameclock_countdown 0. Can never remember which one is used, and i don't know why there are two commands for the same thing x(
