So there is a distinct strategy going on here for added pressure to stop. The problem for people who do this is.

The reason he made that statement is because he no longer wants to get tortured. They likely staged this scenario quite a few times before and every time he would defy them he would have likely received a severe beating. It's also possible that they threatened to kill the other captives if he refused. Along with many other reasons for why he did what he did.
