Well, it's natural, that he plays since no one who can strafe is able to let their fingers off of quake completely, the flow of the game is just too addictive! I don't think, that he cheats anymore; he had reached a decent level also without cheating, and since he can not play at online tournaments anymore, because obviously no one is gonna trust him, there is no "reason" to cheat anymore. Also: it seems, that he plays with the best/legit/trustworthy other spanish players. I don't really care and think no one should, I just think it's so typical, that someone who originally stated that he won't play anymore, plays again. Actually I think, that quake more than other games conditions your brain, and provokes (edit:literally) salivation (makes flow your spittle), when you think of hitbeeps f.e.; try it! It's actually a kind of a drug, which is not exceptionally bad, like other drugs.

As much as I would like for SombrA to be clean, there is just no way I will ever trust him in an online environment, especially with the lack of anticheat for QL... who knows, maybe that's the reason he came back, or maybe they caught him cheating at poker! :p

And "best" does not necessarily go hand in hand with "legit" and "trustworthy", they are 2 (3) different concepts, the fact that he plays with the best doesn't mean anything, although I do not currently suspect any of spain's top players.

i beg to differ here. in q3 (at least in osp) communities was country based (netcode + connections at that time) and self-policing. kicking from an already started match helped too. tbh i cant recall ever playing a blatant aimbotter in q3, obv that doesnt mean there wasnt sneaky cheaters... but there was no stats, so nothing to gain besides maybe being regarded as "good" in a community where noone gives a fuck about you until you not show up at a local LAN. punkbuster probably also stopped the easily accessable cheats too. the effort/gain ratio in ql is just simply tragic, hence the high nr. of cheaters.

If an anticheat would ever (or is still?!) be added, it would be only to say "hey, there 's an anticheat here, you can't accuse me of cheating!"

i think it depends a lot on the kind of game: in cs and cod timers hacks are useless, and with the different styles of aims the aimbots are less evident in quake; moreover wallhacks, at high levels, are more useful in a game like quake in which the opponents moves around and teleports fast; plus there is the healt question, totally useless in cs and cod, and also the items to watch

Another client-side program that monitors processes and sends screenshots. Has been tried dozens of times before. Been there, done that - failed. Every. Single. Time.

Cheat prevention would be the way to go:
- stop using easily hooked APIs
- only send relevant information to the clients

Both would need quite a bit of development work, and the latter one would put additional load on the servers. So ain't gonna happen, especially since id staff apparently don't mind cheating in the slightest.

QL does basically only send relevant information to the clients.
This is done both to minimize network load, and as cheat protection.
That's why players dissapear when not in PVS.
you can only ever see them through walls with a wallhack (wolfcam cg_wh, ql r_showtris) because they have to be within the PVS at that point to for sound triggers.

I always thought that everything disappears when outside of the PVS. That's the purpose of the entire PVS concept, I guess.

Please mind that potentially visible is not the same thing as visible and there is absolutely no need for the client to know the position and orientation of other players, when those players are not visible and make no sound.

At least for me, predefined volumes in the map are not an optimal way to determine relevant information for the clients.

The more conspicuous a cheat, the greater the likelihood of a ban.

The likelihood of a ban is very high for 'obvious' cheats.

Besides ESR likes this sort of thing. You have a demo of an 'obvious' cheater, you sent it in, they weren't banned. You could then post your demo on ESR and be like hey look, obvious cheater here that goes unbanned.

Then others will look at the demo and be able to more or less confirm the strength of your evidence.

One little example: during the last year ash, pavel and some other "known" players were able to rename their accounts, while common players were not.

Renaming accounts is a separate issue.

Allowing a few players to get a name change is a long way from allowing players to cheat.

There is a significant difference between some manual labour for a couple of people and them accepting that it may hose their entire account and offering to spend your entire day doing nothing but the same for thousands.
