After Doom 3 was a disappointment but id software still thinks it was an exceptionally good game, I managed to keep my enthusiasm within limits.

But in general, I am disenchanted by the stress on eye candy that looks crap when things on the screen start moving and nothing like what is promised by the screenshots. But I cannot say clearly what is missing to make things look better, more real. It could be something about light in the physical world that has not been mapped properly into the computer world, like interference. Light in computer games is treated like particles and not like a wave. At least, I have not yet seen a rainbow created dynamically given from the equations.

John Carmack spoke about one thing in one of his key notes, that computer graphics proigrammers use a lot of simplifications and refinements to make things look real, let's say a rough sphere and the diffuse reflexions of light coming from it. But instead of implmenting the physical laws, they used approximations or things not related to natural laws (like increasing the exponent of the reflexion coefficient).

Why Quake 3 felt so "real" to me, remains an unknown, but id does not seem to want to chase after this special ingredient.

That's not true, since John Carmack's fingerprints are all over what he left behind. Not surprisingly so, given the factoid that he coded Quake 3 all by himself (the engine, i.e. the part of the program that says how things are calculated and how fast it could go on the computers of that time). id software would have been stupid if they abandoned his work, and I think they separated in mutual friendliness. And as far as I know it was his decision.

They sued him later on though. Carmac said he'd be at QuakeCon for his keynote if they let him, and he wasn't.

carmack actually removed bunnyhopping in q3a because it "looked stupid" ... the great thing he did, was that he made the games moddable ... gameplay was majorly influenced by romero in doom until quake 1, after which he left ... after romero left, the id games just didnt manage to cut it gameplaywise and were just some good technology demos ...
sure quake still lived on and was succesful because of its big brand and the big id brand, but by now after a long streak of mediocre games id has finally managed to be just another company among many others ... noone will care about their new title, because its the new big title from id or because it is a successor of quake, maybe doom has still some edge left, because they only released one mediocre title (i.e. doom3) until now ... but rest assured after doom 4, noone will care anymore for a doom 5

Doom3, graphically was the start of a revolution that other games then followed. Remember seeing the alpha leaked on a friends pc and i couldnt believe it was a game. SP was cool, bought my first home theater to play it properly, lights off full volume, it was awesome.

What revolution? It's engine wasn't used by other games, not big titles at least. Maybe Prey, if i remember correctly.

Anyway, style wise there haven't been games so dark for years to come.

Who cares if the engine was used or not? When it came out it was the best looking fps game ever, many reviews of important game portals agree, nex1 dont.

This. Furthermore, the developers of fps games from the good old days pretty much disappeared in this millennium, practically none making something relevant or that mattered on the industry.

The only guy that I can name of that mattered is Cliffy B (the UT guy). Weirdly enough the guy hyped to death here is Carmack instead, who if it was for him strafe jumping wouldn't exist (among others) and that's been entirely irrelevant since quake3, whereas Cliffy B was involved in projects such as Gears of War, that shaped the industry since the Xbox 360 to the point his contributions are on par with the entire id software team combined.

Or if you want to put in a troll-ish way, on the long run UT won the war.

Yeah I hate that scripted "press x, watch demo of charecter animation" stuff.

It seems like it's going to be an option for melee combat so you don't have to use it, rather than scripted set pieces in which it instructs which buttons to press. (as in completely ignore melee and shoot the crap out of everything)

Can't remember the exact announcement, but yeah, it was at least implied the reveal was for attendees only. But they had to have known many people would be expecting a doom reveal for everyone, regardless of their announcement.

It's just shitty marketing though. It would be one thing if it was just something they were doing for a small group of the press. I feel it's another thing to reveal it to a few (several?) thousand people but snub your nose at the supposedly 50k+ on stream.

I thought someone (Willits or someone else) on the stream mentioned 50k online viewers. Maybe 50k views throughout the day, I don't know. But yeah, at the time there was only about 6k on there, wasn't sure how many streams they had.

I never did end up playing Rage, was it really that bad?

Doom 3 was good back in 2004 because of the wow factor in terms of graphics. I did get bored of doom 3 after a few hours because of the tedious gameplay. Nowhere near as good as doom 1 and 2.

I enjoyed Rage although it was all quite linear.

i enjoyed rage aswell, but the ending was like a finish of a small campaign, probably they aimed for rage2 to much.

This, I liked rage, but they should have made it a lot longer...

The last "gaming" PC I built was for doom3, lol. Not that great of a game by any means (6 or 7/10), but superb graphics (10/10).

Well, I remember at the time it was just amazing to see surfaces that looked round in games, and you couldn't see the individual polygons that it was made of. Also the stencil shadows or whatever were really impressive then. Of course, now everyone that does a good ol' nostalgic run through DooM3 is like "lol look at the funny plastic bubble man jajajaj"

At that time I could watch DooM 3 only in magazines and it look scary as fuck :)

Doom3 and Quake4 were more of tech demos imo. A showcase for id's new idTech. Apart from that, they're really mediocre.

Well it seems Bethesda cracked the whip this time around and apparently everyone that saw the demo liked it so I'm guessing they will stick with this one. I mean, I actually haven't seen a review of the demo that didn't seem like the person loved it.
