What cg_preferredStartingWeapon do people use? This is one of the things I've never bothered to change since q3, cause you can just pay attention to ammo, even though it's a glaring (but minor) problem. Always exciting to be low on ammo and autoswitch to the worst weapon ever for that situation.

Seems like it should kinda be dependent on what your current weapon is, not a single string, but that'd be overcomplicating things even more.

Best example is for CA. In any game mode where you spawn with multiple weapons, you can use cg_preferredStartingWeapons to choose which of the weapons you'll spawn with.

If you always want to spawn with the LG (if you have it on spawn), you could simply put: cg_preferredStartingWeapons "lg"

Or you could put an entire list of weapons and show the order you want, and it will fallback to the next weapon if you didn't have an lg: cg_preferredStartingWeapons "lg rl rg cg sg pg mg ng gl g pl"

I haven't tested this, but I assumed it's also the order weapons will be selected when you run out of ammo. So rather than pg, rg, lg, based on availability, you could set rl lg rg sg, for instance.

Yes. Just like there is a global audio cue that lets you know that the power-up was picked-up, there is now a global chat message (much like the so-and-so got the flag chat message in CTF) that states who picked up the power-up. Really just saves you a bit of time from having to glance at your teamoverlay to determine if it was a teammate that got it.

Hm, at first i thought this was controversial but then i realised it is not, just like you say, that big of a change considering the team overlay is already standard.

In QW both the autoreporting feature (to teammates only) and team overlay are not allowed in competitions due to the whole aspect of relaying information to teammates getting lost. Makes it much easier to make certain decisions then (most obvious one being pre-shooting around corners).

Cool to see work going on in QL though :)

I doubt they will do tech 5 since games are still coming out with it. But it's CRAZY how they haven't ported QL to tech 4. QL is dying/died and they HAVE to do something. They should also put it on Steam.

I'm hoping they will announce QL to tech 4 at QuakeCon, but knowning ID, I'd be shit out of luck.

QL's physics and amazing code, written, in the most important parts, by sir Carmack, John D., fits perfectly in what makes QL a QUAKE game. Anything else, be it with whatever 'bumpmapping 80 lvl' or any other whistles, shits and giggles - is just a useless bullcrap for the core essence of Quake.
Old tech? Mate, it works outstandingly good, runs on any machine and has been perfected through years of polishing.

Some people will never stop spilling nasal mucus of complainment, no matter what.
What's the point of disassembling a decades-united community with 'new version' of a perfect fps, which is hardcore to da bone as of now?

Mind our CPMA friends - a huge portion of Quake community was left behind in Q3 era, just because of 'new' and 'bumpmapped' Q4 decease (no matter how good Q4 is - it's still worse than Q3 in terms of pure arena fps).

Do you want companies to sponsor tourneys? (they won't with 1999 gfx)
Do you want casual gamers to play?( casual players like how games look, it's part of the fun)
Do you want the game to be successful at all? ( it's already dead... it's only going to get worse if thing don't change drastically)

One of the biggest mistakes anyone with a product can do is:

Listen to the most niche aspect of the community and base everything around them.
They've been doing this and it doesn't work.

Do you really think QL will last much longer without a major overhaul?

Mate, no sponsoring can push a game into success, unless it's liked by the majority crowd of kids, and kids nowadays are mostly too fucking "casual" and have next to zero balls count.

"Do you want casual gamers to play?" - I wish they COULD play, but 99,99% will ragequit within the first few minutes of any Quake-like challenge, no matter how cool and bumpmapped it looks. Add realistic water, hairs, grass, bullet marks, but if a newbie's ass gets kicked over and over for a few minutes - he'll just quit and delete. And there's no end to these weakling habits through gaming-companies - it's a whole trend on a large general scale.

All QL needs now is a bit better matchmaking system, that will allow weak players to compete against other newbies, and push them (from time to time) into a tad bit more challenging tier, backing them down to lower tier withing 3-5 minutes of battle, in case their ass is teared apart fiercely and frustratingly.

A good investment into such MM-system, followed up by fresh, manly and stylish advertising (exactly like Joe Goss did it) will focus the searchlights on QL for the amount of time enough to inject armies of new blood into QL's servers. The hype and playercount will also convince major leagues for a test-return of Quake on their stages.

If that works - Quake as we know and love it (the best incarnation of outstandingly smart, brainpower-demanding fast-speed duel/team fps) will thrive once again.
Otherwise - ... will be otherwise.

Disagreed.
You need to ATTRACT people to the game.
I'm 27 and I was first introduced to Quake back in 1998 with Quake2. Back then the graphics/engine were very impressive. The majority of Quake's remaining players are between 20-30 years old and grew up playing games when Quake was at it's peak.
Competitive FPS doesn't hook everyone, but before people will get attached to it, they need to play it once and enjoy it first.
If you want to attract newer players, you'll need some eye candy first. 'SUPER DIFFICULT, HIGH SKILL CURVE COMPETITIVE FPS' does not sound like everyone's cup of tea initially. But if you give them the chance to enjoy the game's overall experience, you might end up converting them.

no u wont, why did UT3 not take crown? it had good graphics, lots of marketing etc? because it sucked. maybe lots of ppl new to it bought it and they had that initial income, but no one stayed.

QL was an amazing move from id, they made money from such and old game again, and they surely attracted new players, lots of ql players NEVER played q3. so u are dead wrong.

wasted resources. Make the game as good as they can now. Players who are gonna stay, will not care about graphics anyway, what players who were attracted by graphics, would never stay. It's not 1999 anymore, more time used on fancy effects will do NOTHING for a game like quake.

I think it's more a question of YOU wanting better graphics, well, go play another game.

Porting the game, be it to id tech 4 or 5, would be equivalent to making a whole new game in these engines. That usually takes years with tens of developers. I don't think that's realistic for QL. But there might be a Quake V one day, if you're willing to wait. (Doom first, then maybe Rage 2?)

id is extremely slow indeed. That said, it's not just them. Big games take a long time and cost a lot to develop across the whole industry. Except maybe for some indie titles for which developers starve and overwork before it's released.
The closest example we could get to a QL in id tech 4 or 5 would probably be Q4, which had a budget of $15,000,000 and was made in around 4 years by Raven. QL might not need a singleplayer but I don't think there would be any less models or maps (or work) than if there was.

10 -15 people working actual 40 hr weeks.

Based on my experience modeling and map making.... and seeing how fast mod makers put out full games.
And considering a game like QL is super simplistic compared to any single player fps/ or most other games.

The majority of the work is already done.
Game design/ concept. Done.
Map/item layout testing.... done.
Character design.... 90% done
coding 90% done.

Basically everything is already done except for updating the actual look of the game... and whatever code needs to be written to hook/wrap their shitty browser into tech 5.

The maps should be able to be imported into tech 5 (bsp) which means the overall layout is basically done. Just have to pretty it up with meshes and textures.

Characters would have to be modeled/textured animated from scratch... but they dont have to sit around brain storming on what each player model will look like. A simple game like this... most animations can be copy pasted from model to model with slight tweaks for each. they already have shit tons of animation sequences from rage and doom 4 to recycle.

Update weapon models
update special fx, particles ect ect
website would really only have to be updated with new screen shots from in game.

if that actually took them more than 2 yrs... theres something wrong.

There was talk of clan jerseys/logos... also assuming clan logos on ctf flags ctf map wall banners ect ect.

That's the kind of stuff they need for pro subs.

You were probably able to see through a wall(not necessarily see anything that would give an advantage, fixing clipping usually means this is fixed so the player can no longer look through the wall at a certain place.

noobs would hopefully start off on grapplehook modes(ictf/ctf/ffa/ca/insta to start. tdm and 1v1 should always be grapplefree ;p)
if done right, it could be a bigger success with casuals than quakelive ever was.

Not wrong in that particular case.

Many casuals heard about QL at one point or another though and most of them did not keep playing.
CPMA is just an even more hardcore and brutal version of what QL is to a casual.

Had they known, they still wouldn't be playing it imo.

of course not, to catch up you have to play against veterans but i saw some guys who would just play each other not even knowing about strafejumping (they did develop other movement techniques first) and they liked it. No reason to play a dead game tho, they stopped when they were starting to get good. No quake game has been designed for newbies to understand the game step by step, it's always the community who takes care of that if the newbie gets lucky enough to find someone who's willing to teach him stuff.

CPMA/Q3 wannabe clones aren't popular because all their models are outdated or they are plain bad, who uses irc to arrange matches anyway? Where are the tutorials for the shitload of meta game there is behind the pew pew part? I must be one of the few quakers who think gameplay isn't the bigger factor of why these games aren't popular...

P.S.: I'm alpha testing reflex and I'd say newborn and his team are doing a great job so far; he did not wake up one morning and thought: i'm gonna make a game. He's been designing the game for quite a while as he mentioned on chats.

I agree with most of the stuff you said.

QL is missing key features (matchmaking with a ladder, proper tutorial videos for such a complex game and so on) to keep newcomers interested.

Gameplay is a still a significant factor in my opinion. This has been said countless times already but casuals will always find more satisfaction in their first play of BF/COD through the easy kills they get by hitting 2 bullets on whoever than they ever will on Quake. It's sadly how things are.

I never said reflex devs are doing a bad job but I can't see this game being successful at any point. They don't have the resources for proper marketing and it won't go anywhere without that.
Chances are, it will end up being a Warsow/Xonotic with its 17players and that's it.
I put Nex, Deft Grinders, Warxon, Rekt and all the others I'm forgetting in that same category.

Reborn has bigger chances at doing well in my opinion because it's 2gd doing it and he has connections within the e-sports industry that will help the game get out there.

UT could also do ok just because it's coming from a well known studio. They just have to do things right (which I doubt they will on many aspects but they seem to take suggestions fairly seriously so far so wait and see)

I would like to be wrong and see any of them do very well and have a huge scene, I just don't see it happening.

It's an era of casual non-challenging gaming now, for all the new blood introduced into competitive scene, be it multiplayer or singleplayer. You can't make a hardcore self-discipline-demanding challenge attractive to a kid, grown with minecraft, bf, sims, wot, etc...
Especially in countries with enforced juvenile justice, where kids are pretty much rewarded for being egoistic or going apeshit for littlest reason or no reason at all. Those kids have no clue what self-improvement is, they haven't felt the satisfaction of beating an obstacle high enough to cause a lot of frustration at first, which is then flushed with a torrent of endorphines at the end of the day - the feeling of a champion well-earned.

It's not like those games I've mentioned are bad, it's just that kids are getting used to easy and diluted stuff (in terms of challenge, ofc), which has flooded the gaming industry since 2003-2005, and games nowadays are quite a huge factor in development of core structures of the younglings.

The cancellation of premium, price cut on pro, premium features moving to standard accounts, the ability of pro subscribers to launch servers of any game type and any map for standard uses to join and forced bright models no longer being default...all of this kinda hints they will be transitioning to microtransaction model. I bet that's the QuakeCon announcement.

well.... tbh it would take more bandwidth for their servers, and as you know bandwidth is one of the most expensive things about server hosting.
But seeing how 'most users' already used 125.... and it was optional to start with... I don't really think that that would be a valid argument.

Since it seems you are fixing some stuff will any of the following three ever be fixed, all that have been reported several times since 2008?

1. Adding an option to disable friend list messages in-game. Here there are two possible ways, hopefully both that will be added as different options: one is a command to disable the friends going online/offline message, the other being to able to disable the whole friend list aspect of QL, for whichever reason (no annoyances at all, simpler game, better performance).

2. That demos are always recorded when using the always record option. Every year and every event there's at least one crucial demo lost forever. Patch notes state this has been solved -many times may I add-, but it hasn't.
On a related note, it'd be nice that quakecon demos are made public, for fragmovies and whatnot. Why isn't this always the case?

3. The vertical sound bug. As basic as it may sound, right now positional sound in QL is in such state that there's no certainty between where the opponent is, vertically. Take dm6's bridge for example, in which the opponent sounds both below and above it.
This bug was not present in 1999 Q3 but is in 2014 QL, which seems it uses the exact same tech (no improvements from 1999).
Considering the recent patches are "the quakecon patch", namely the big one of the whole year and also somewhat competition focused, we have seen this problem affect many tournaments and certainly will affect this year's quakecon. Furthermore I hope solving this problem isn't delayed for yet another year, if not forever.
BTW I'm not asking for 7.1, dolby headphone support or anything fancier above past millennium stereo sound. Just asking for a good implementation of it while solving what can be considered a major bug.

That there aren't that many recent complains about those three is because we just lost hope that they''ll ever be fixed. Same goes about lan support, better textures/sprites, ra3 and many other requests. Finally, if it sounds as you have read this in the past it's because they haven't been solved, in 6 years and counting.

edit: and of course, I practically assume the "harosh" killbeep is coming in the patch to be announced at the event, whether free or paid.

1. I don't have any real desire to disable messages from friends. I would like to see the "x is now online" messages removed or optionally removed.

2. Currently it is the case that demos not properly named still get generated (or should) with a default naming scheme rather than the player-timestamped naming scheme. The essentially problem hasn't been determined, but I will investigate further into the matter to see if this can be fully resolved.

3. There is no vertical sound bug. There was never positional sound in Quake 3. The idtech 3 sound system out only supports left and right.

problem is if you see a white text in the chat area, you going to focus on that, but most of the cases its pointless to focus on it. maybe if it would have a little icon, or other color.

maybe the updates should be about the players desire, not yours...? it would be optional of couse, if the game would have proper steaworks support. i dont really feel the right direction in the updates.

great update.

to make the game fair, it is necessary that all users have access to the same ingame-cfg-options.
i haven't checked if the triangles still change to useless information like impressives/... but so far i love the overworked teamstatus indicators.
although i already am used to the black borders, the scaling of the q3-xhairs simply owns.

i hope stinkerror and spongebob keep up the good work.

Old crosshairs dosent really work ,tried alot of different gfx settings cause i prefer them but na ,to unsharp or something. They didnt look like that in the good old days. Also picmip on the weapon models and weapon effects would be cool :)

Looks good to me. I have noticed there's certain shades of certain colors that will leave the q3 xhairs with blurry edges (for eg, xhair 22, size 40+, color 15).

And we still can't turn off the annoying ass "Friend X joined" and ingame messages when they talk you on the friend thing, so now I will have to watch all the friends from the broadcasters connecting and disconnecting and chatting with them while in game. Fucking ridiculous. Fuck off and die id.

It will be a custom crosshair within one of the .menu files your loading through your .cfg hudfile.

open each .menu hud file

ctrl+f "cg_drawcrosshair"

delete the lines relating to test cvar and its value (most folks put comments in their .menu files, so you could probably find and get rid of it that way. Make sure if you delete any "{ }" that it is done in pairs, as ql will not parse it properly when loading it.)

Or, if you still can't fix it, post it on qlhud.net or im me with it and I'll fix it for you. Will take 30 sec or so.

Edit:

Just do a sanity check on your cg_weaponconfig's cvars while you're at it.
