gamespy closes all services pr 31/5 (19 comments)

I just found out gamespy is pulling the plug on all services and I presume it will kill all games using it for multiplayer.

when ingame multiplayer browsers gets killed, it usually means the game will die quicker than anything :(

If a community wants to keep playing a game they will find a way. Alteriwnet, or FEAR community, example:

About the F.E.A.R. Community
Since 2012, a group of FEAR players and supporters started working in the fix of the most critical issues in the game, creating the FEAR Community. Their Server patch added the capacity to use New CDKeys and a Final Solution to Server Crash Attacks by Hackers. With the Master Server shutdown, we released (that same day: December 5, 2012) the FEAR Launcher as a workaround to find and connect to Servers, and 1 month later, the first FEAR patch, that Restored the Game Functionality to the original state, but this time with our own Master Server, instead GameSpy services.

So don't worry if your community wants to keep things alive it will.

I left it default on my server and it got picked up by some service (can't really remember which). Maybe someone added it manually, could be.

Developer of GameRanger here. TL;DR: The news is not that bad.

The original source of this list (re-posted endlessly) was from GameSpy Arena which from memory was a web-based ladder system (manual confirm-win, report-loss) that was completely unrelated to which games used GameSpy tech. So the list is both incorrect and incomplete.

Regardless, from that list, these games never used GameSpy tech in the first place: see link

ye, but i've seen it fail before, HARD, tribes 2 died because they shut down. A community made patch was in development, but was ultimately abandoned, since adoption rate was so low i guess. Soldier of fortune is definitely gonna die, since they havent gotten to fix physics/fps issues without some stupid mix of fps limit mod and sofplus. Games without a closed private community, the ones that still depend on ppl just dropping in on servers from in-game browser will not make it.

Yeah, the ones who really never check info online, and have no idea that they won't be able to refresh the server list they will be totally lost, unless they can't let it go and make some researches, but even then it doesn't mean the game will stay alive...

Saw that since quite some times as i play a related game: unreal tournament 3.
We already got a confirmation by the community manager (Fl4k) that a workaround/fix is already planned and "working" tested on their office servers apparently and from what i read.

I guess at least the UT games are "safes" already.Hope-fkn-fully.
