Stop trying to make e-sports so 'professional', I know that for the time being it seems like its a necessary step to take and that sponsors are pushing for it, but I believe a lot of people turn to the internet because they are feed-up with all the politically-correct censored BS they show on TV and other mainstream media these days.

I'm much more worried about the heavy censorship twitch is forcing on the streamers using their services, to the point were they are scared to invite guests on in-case they might say something offensive. I remember once the moderators actually deleted all the comments on chat because someone was asking if cypher smokes weed, and that was in the public stream chat..

Research racism in esports a bit, there is a big difference between your mate down the road yelling racial slurs occasionally in a game of LoL - and a 'professional' caster on a large stage saying he wants to kill ethnic minorities (or what ever exaggerated example one would use). The first one is borderline harmless, it may only influence the few people surrounding the discussion. Where as someone communicating their racist ideas to thousands upon thousands is a tool to get us back to the 1930's mentality.

That being said, problem is that the issue is more complex that both parts want it to be. You don't solve anything by banning certain words or even sentences, you always have to look at what was the actual intention of the message. Certain phrases are very hateful in certain contexts, but if both parts are on an even ground they end up harmless.

It's noticable that you might be upset at me because you keep asking in chat for us to support team modes. We do support team modes, in fact that's what I did when I started casting. How ever at the moment we stream 5-7 days a week while having many other things to do. If we find the right team event to cover, one that fits in to our schedule - then we can get something going. For the time being, there are plenty of other Quake streamers who are looking for content on their channel.

I was simply expressing my surprise in seeing how easily you could offend a part of your fanbase (the people that support you and give you money) when the whole point of the article is not being offensive.

(I have no clue how old he is, btw)

About the NiP case, instead, I learn from your article that the offensive language was used during a private, practice game and later leaked with screenshots. This is very different from a player using equally offensive language during an official, public league match. To continue the analogy, we have no idea what any football player says during his training hours, since those are not public.

All of this being said, I agree with your general point that if we want esports to grow on a professional level we need to stop allowing this kind of language in a public, official context.

And about team modes, of course it had nothing to do with this thread, I'll write you a pm about that since I don't want to go OT.

I think you're attaching yourself too closely to the examples I gave in the article. They were merely 'anecdotes' about recent examples of racism/offensive language used unnecessarily where it reached the public.

It sounds like you are agreeing with me in general but not with the examples provided.

We don't know what football players say during their training hours because they don't have members of the public with them. The NiP LoL players were not training, they were spending time with 'fans'. Obviously there was a 'fan' in there who did not appreciate their comments. Doesn't really matter whether or not we believe if Evil knew what he was saying tbh, because the points I made still stand. I could instead have written about other examples that happened over the last year or even longer, but instead I wanted to keep it up-to-date. :)

Imo the problem is not so much with esports/casters but more society as a whole.
Every person nowadays seems to be wanting to top everyone else.

Someone puts a video on youtube of walking a rope 10ft off of the ground, it gets a few million hits... Someone else will do the same shit from the top of a building. The next from the highest skyscaper near him. Then the next will go to the highest skyscraper in the world and do the same... And the next guy might build an even higher skyscraper just to top that.

Someone calls your mom a whore... the next guy will tell you he slept with her... the next guy will try that with your grandma and soon after they go for the male relatives. Then soon after that they will actually try to find your adress to come over and prove it.

Nowadays even in average soccer matches people are talking about "Fatal mistakes" while I hardly ever see any player die. And I've never seen one die because of a "mistake he made" (except maybe entering a soccer match without being aware that he had a heart condition).

The whole concept of this is fubar rediculous... And the reason for it is that nowadays you can compare yourself only to the best. While in previous societies you could compare yourself only to people near you.
What I mean by that is fairly simple. Everyone is "competitive" and tries to measure his/her skills in some way.
When I grew up (damn............................) I used to measure myself against my brothers and sometimes against other people in my neighbourhood and then I joined some team and competed against people from my vicinity.
With the recent addition of things like youtube it's become possible to measure yourself up against the best of the best.
So rather than aiming to beat the best person in your neighbourhood in some sports/game, people now aim to beat the best in the world.

I wasn't referring to any specific case. But racism in private servers is an interesting situation. That said, I'm not sure if this situation really is one as simple as that. First of all, Riot might have its own policies and regulations even on private servers if they host them in a fashion similar to how "private" servers in QL work. I don't know much about LoL. The other issue is that these guys are on the job (or so it seems). It's not just a BBQ party between friends. Also, if the guys they were playing with (or who were spectating) aren't from the same team (or people related to their sponsor), they're effectively presenting Telia to outsiders as an organization supporting racists.

That's all true, my problem with this situation is that the screenshots didn't post themselves on the internet.

Let's say the same thing happens where you work, right by the coffee machine where people from 3 different companies are waiting for another dude's cappucino to blöörtsh into the cup. It's not nearly as clear-cut as some people would like it to be.

The reason the NiP private conversation is bad is because it got to the public eye in the first place. They could certainly have a BBQ with each other, as a team and say plenty of racist stuff knowing that it will never be leaked (but hey, I'm not suggesting they would ever do that). When you start including strangers to your conversation then you run the risk of humiliating yourself, and in the worst case.. ruining/tainting your career.

I think there's a balance that can be struck. There's certainly a limit which some individuals may feel the need to actively watch out for.

I haven't watched his stream in a long time, but I did used to watch quite a bit of sc2. I played it for a very short period of time and decided to try and educate myself a bit on the scene.

The quake community is one of the ones that have aged the most, yes we all grew up playing this game from q1 etc. We were also once young ones, but looks like the majority of people that still play are just as "childlike" in their online behaviour. You should be welcoming the new players, even the new youngsters that are joining.

I'm glad people still choose quake over LOLofDuty, we just need to leave our anger and immaturity at the game login screen and enjoy the game.
