My opinion: the ESL took the right decision. Those were very inappropriate (and insulting) comments and keeping him in the casting crew would have been tantamount to condoning what he said (yes, he was also trying to be funny, but apparently not in a "ahah I don't mean anything I'm saying" way, rather in a "ahah I'm exaggerating but my point still stands" way).

Not as much as it was a kneejerk overreaction and a product of our uptight constant supervision culture which now effects every aspect of individual's life, including his private life. If my employee tells me that he is cheating his wife and I don't immediately fire him on the spot, how does that translate to me condoning unfaithfulness? It is not employer's place to patronize and control someone's' private life. Employer's framework is to judge employees by their work performance.

In the past when someone hung their tie that signified as a step over the boundary of working place into their private life. Thorin, as a private person, entered a cast where f-words, rants and juvenilities are a norm on. A show, which is clearly aimed at some collegeguy having a beer. The show's name is UNFILTERED for fuck's sake.

So what if the show's name was "Unfiltered"? What if there was a show called "Let's be racist with the KKK" - would racist comments be perfectly acceptable if said on that show? Does one's responsibility for the comments one makes publicly (you seem to forget those were public comments) suddenly disappear based on the name of the show those comments are made on? Casters are one of the most visible parts of the public face of the organizations behind the events they work on, and if an organization does not want to see its public face associated with the views of certain individuals, it's perfectly understandable (and logical) for that organization not to hire them to be its public face.

First of all, I don't think he should be fired even if it was the WP radio. People should not be discriminated in employment because of their political beliefs (UN human rights). You have to understand it works both ways, also meaning you cannot fire a worker contemplating union membership or black person championing equal rights.As long as they don't conduct them unprofessionally on the job.

In this case UNFILTERED is intended as a traffic sign to exclude possibly stuffshirted, humourless people (e.g. people such as yourself) or to hint them to attune and loosen their attitude. To use something called discretion. All I'm interested is it reasonable to believe this would transfer him to conducting himself unprofessionally on the show. Context effects this question because of hypothesized target audience and the situation, which differs in these cases, but is not instrumental to my argument.

This scenario resembles a case where school teacher lost her job for making a quick buck as a lingerie model on the side. What I mean about hypothezied audience is that these pictures clearly was not intended for children or classroom setting. The hypothesized target audience of these pictures were not children so it strengthens the argument of this NOT working as an evidence for her to strip it out in the classroom. The discharge was ungrounded to begin with, but it strenghtens the argument.

Also. Was kicking the first disciplinary action they took against Thorin? If they had a problem with him, a rebuke would have been the more appropriate mean to address this.

What a crock of shit, in ANY first world nations employees who demonstrate explicitly racist, or discriminatory behavior are IMMEDIATELY terminated. You may have a right to express yourself as you please, but to expect continued employment without any effects is just plain stupid.

Sorry for bumping the thread, but I wanted to reply to this. People's public expression of their beliefs can sometimes very well lead to employment termination, and this is true everywhere in the world. Imagine you are a white man working for a black man. You tell your boss, the rest of the staff, and possible clients, "I believe black men are animals who should be exterminated". Do you think you are going to keep your job? Do you think you should keep your job?

In the case being discussed here, Thorin's comments directly impacted him performing his job. Why? Because, as a caster, he is the public face of the organization hosting the event (this is usually not true of sports events, for which TV channels hire their own casters, but it is true here). Since he made public comments on Poland and Polish people, these public comments colored how people saw him, and therefore how people saw the organization which employed him as its public face. That the show on which he made those comments is named "unfiltered" is completely irrelevant: he still made offensive comments and what I just wrote applies just the same. The organization legitimately decided that it did not want to have someone who had just made these offensive comments as its public face, and therefore did not hire him (or terminated their contract). An additional reason mentioned by the ESL was that it would have led to tensions with the Polish staff. These were two entirely work-related concerns which make the discharge perfectly grounded.

So, yeah, next time, instead of trying to insult me, perhaps think a little bit more about the issue first.

Big mistake by Thorin. I don't really think he's a terrible person for making the comments, just someone who used poor judgment in his position. I understand the show is "unfiltered", but you can't go around making those comments and then represent a league that embraces competition on a global scale.

Good decision by ESL. As much as people think it sucks that they're being hard on the guy, they're trying to maintain a level of integrity in "eSports". This is a good thing for it's future, no matter the game.

In the end, Thorin should just issue an apology and acknowledge his mistakes and move on from this mess.

Ironically it's a place I want to visit before going back to uni in September. I'm thinking of going to Germany first (awesome, awesome place) then traveling across to Poland and after that I'm not sure where.

Any tips on what to see and what not? Don't know very much about Poland as of yet and I think asking someone who is actually from there is a lot more reliable than from a guidebook.

I dunno man, I don't do much sightseeing myself. Visit Bieszczady or Zakopane if you wanna do some hiking and experience a more rural side of things over here, maybe take a trip to the shore over at Gdynia and Sopot, all really nice places to chill and take in some views.

As far as cities themselves go, Gdansk, Wroclaw, Zielona Gora and Krakow should be on your list if you wanna hit some tourist attractions. They're all really beautiful cities with this specific kind of old-timey aura to them. Lots to see, lots to do.

Also, stay the fuck away from Warsaw unless it's an in and out kind of thing. Not much to see here (except for the old town district and some creepy abandoned buildings filled with crazed hobos) and you're much more likely to get to know the uglier side of Poland here than anywhere else.

Oh and don't care too much about money, since you're from UK you'll be able to cruise around like a king, everything is dirt cheap in comparison.

well, Warsaw could be a great place to visit as long as you're not there for sightseeing, but for enjoying your time. At night more than enough places to go out with prices ridiculously low and there's quite a few that are of international standard and arguably the best night life in Poland. In the daytime then you have loads of museums, art galleries, tons of parks and green spaces to enjoy yourself.

And I guess even a 'clueless tourist' can work it all out with a little help from Internet or just by asking people, Poles are extremely nice and open once you actually talk to them.

It's extremely difficult to get sponsors for "e-sports" events due to the flaming and whiny nature of gamers as it is (yes sponsors do read your comments). Doing it "on-air" will only drive sponsors away. Which kinda gets in the way of players wanting bigger prizes. Community needs to grow up and act more respectfully toward one another.

How can that persist? If the profit margins are so ridiculously high (cheap labour from Poland, high prices for Brits) why isn't everyone stepping into entrepreneurs' shoes and bringing the prices to a more sensible equillibrium by offering more for inputs and still undercutting other retailers a bit to capture the market share? That would necessarily bid up prices for labour (Brits would be encouraged to get a job) and the additional supply of all the stuff produced would mean lower prices and therefore lower cost of living.

In Germany terminations are regulated to a high degree. In particular terminations cannot be arbitrary but need to be justified. It's actually key that Thorin was just a freelancer because here those regulations don't apply. ESL is free to do business with whoever they want which is why they could just kick him off their team. If he was actually their employee and they fired him the termination would never hold in court (unless Thorins statements were ruled racist).

Again - I only know about the situation in Germany (where ESL is based...). Maybe in Canada it is different (I doubt it).
