Hi,

I'm considering switching from a Samsung 2233rz to the one below.

Iiyama ProLite GB2488HSU specifications:

Diagonal: 24-inch
Native resolution: Full HD (1920x1080)
Response time: 1 ms
Maximum refresh rate: 144 Hz
Signal inputs: DVI-DL, DisplayPort, 2xHDMI
USB HUB: 2 outputs (vs. 2.0)
Height adjustment: 130 mm
Warranty: 3 years on-site
Other features: VESA, speakers, headphone connector

I played some FFA on it today, have to say, prefer it to the benq as there's less inverse ghosting (overdrive option is preset at 144hz and cannot be changed), but then there might be little to no difference in terms of input lag: http://www.twitch.tv/dignitasnvc/c/4047308

The blacks are definitely not as deep as the BenQ equivelant, even the other 27" Iiyama monitors (GB2773HS), but once you lower the Black Tuner from 0 to -3/-4/-5, lower the brightness from 80 to ~55 and mess with the color temperature or RGB it's decent. The XL2420T, VG248QE and this GB2488HSU are all close though and they all need some tuning out of the box, but with the Iiyama I suspect it's to do with the backlight implementation more than the panel, so it could vary from monitor to monitor, but as a gaming screen at the right price it's a valid option. I'm personally sticking with it. My old XL2411T didn't have display port, which is a nice option to have with the Iiyama at the price it retails for. That and it's so close to everything else that i need not use anything else anyway.

Disclaimer: I am unable to accurately test for input lag, you'll need tftcentral.co.uk or prad.de for that, but I've had no problems.

Am i right thinking that i need 144+ FPS in any game i play, as 144hz is the only native setting?

On the 2233rz theres still 100hz and 110hz mode (60hz feels much worse as on other 60hz displays and 75hz doesn't exist)

You will probably be able to set it to 100, 110 and 120, as it runs at 120hz for lightboost.

I'd say that benq XL*Z series are better due to in-built 144hz strobing
also previous iiyama monitor had comparably higher input lag than it's competitiors

Benq also got instant mode
As for strobing there haven't really been properly strobed screens on the market yet to say whether someone really dislikes it. Anyway it's just an additional option for the same cost.

it's lightboost done without additional software, it's just more convenient that it's on the monitor itself. I agree on the price front though, Iiyama should come in at lower. That said, BenQ have always fallen short when it comes to response time (overdrive trailing), so for those not using lightboost/strobing the ASUS and perhaps Iiyama could be a better alternative. Iiyama have always done well in that department, just with slightly higher input lag which has been addressed like i mentioned.

since 2411t the new middle 'high' AMA value works fine tbh, still not perfect, but way better than it was before. At the same time such an aggressive overdrive makes benq screens the most responsive ones comparing to others.
Lightboost aint really optimized for 2d blur elimination with it's driver input overhead, color tint, scanlines on benq's, etc. By the way so far vg248qe actually has been a better lightboost screen, most people i've asked who tried both asus and benq including decent quakers like noctis or winz say that Asus has a better and more noticiable antiblur effect, so most people who tried it there left it activated, whereas benq users are 50/50. And now there is a proper strobing in newer models which is moreover available at 144hz.

It should be fixed in the newer manufactured models, and apparently the 2411Z were the last ones to be manufactured, so I'll check the firmware manufactured date, but I'm quite confident it'll be one of the newer ones. If not I can send it back :)

Can vouch for that! Got myself the xl2411t and it's awesome. Been hitting consistent 60% rg in lots of duels ;)

Takes a bit of tweaking mind you colour wise. But once you got it the way you like it, it's a dream to use.

Wait for a proper G-sync test when it hits the market. Better rely on user experience than reviews, but somehow g-sync sounds like proprietary version of lightboost. I somehow doubt it will be the savior of flat panels

g-sync is more than lightboost, it gives you the smoothness of vsync without the input lag (if your fps is below your hz, which it is if you play anything newer than q3). Too bad it's nvidia's proprietary garbage, it should be universal and an open standard.

Yep, could be good for GPU intensive games with low framerate like Crysis and such where the framerate is low and fluctuates a lot. Not sure if it is totaly useless with quake tho.

Well are you sure you're never going to play a game where you can't get a stable fps equaling your Hz? I play many games where I can't get such high fps. For quakeworld or quakelive it's totally useless afaik.

Im worried about color quality rather than 120hz vs 144hz. The colors on the 2233rz are so mediocre, I cant play dark games on this thing.
The question is: Is this monitor much better color wise?

That is what I am using and the colors are not very good. The benq monitors are supposed to have the best color and black level out of the 144hz moniters.

French website Lesnumeriques.com did their review of that monitor :D

I think if you can't afford the Benq or Asus models, this one is not a bad choice, they gave it 5 starts (5/5) ROFL. We need Chief Blurbuster to review that, I will try to ask him.

The reactivity of the monitor is better in 120hz compared to 144hz, this is because there is no overdrive mode in 144hz sadly.

It's not bad, but it's just a shame.

You have DVI-D, HDMI ports and Display port so it's not a problem here.

And the colours are more than decent, it's at the same level as the other TN panels and IPS they said. You can download profiles files of course.

But if you want more (gsync, 3D, also some issues with ghosting in 144Hz, etc) maybe you should get another monitor.

Gory sorry to ask again, but the only reason you sell the iiyama is because you prefer 16:10 over 16:9 right? But about the performance of the monitor, the iiyama is good compared to your Samsung?

I prefer 16:10 too but they don't do it anymore :(

It's smaller too *_*

DP limit is 4K@60Hz, which means it should be able to do 1920x1080@240Hz, therefore taking 4.2ms to upload a FullHD frame. Dual Link DVI limit is 1920x1080@144Hz, taking 7.9ms.
I'm not sure if the transmit speed is fixed or changing according to monitor refresh rate. I will try to measure actual values.

Actually, using both channels, the DisplayPort math indicates you can theoretically do 4K at nearly 100Hz over DisplayPort, and if you decimate chroma a bit (e.g. 4:2:0), you may be able to do 4K 120Hz over DisplayPort.

DisplayPort is 17.28 gigabits per second total over both channels.
4K 60Hz is only 11.9 gigabits per second. Even with error correction overhead, there's still room for a higher 4K refresh rate.

My math shows you can deliver a 1080p frame in about 2.5ms rather than 4.2ms, if pushing the max limit of DisplayPort 1.2. The future 1.3 will allow 1080p in a mere 1.2-1.5ms, almost hitting the theoretical 1000fps @ 1080p -- maybe possible with decimated chroma :-)

I would love a 120+hz IPS 16:10 screen, sadly they don't exist yet (120hz IPS, except some korean ones from unknown brands) and won't happen anymore (16:10). :(

There are ips panels that are overclockable to 120hz. There is an article about them here http://www.blurbusters.com/overclock/120hz-1440p-ips-monitors/ I should state most of them have 6ms response time.

The DIY kits were sold out, and apparently it's available again, but it's still only for the Asus VG248QE, that's all we have. If you don't want this monitor then you gotta wait. You can also get the kit mounted already with it, but you pay almost double...
