Last really good and visionary game by ID was when "first" ID was almost done - it was Quake3 Arena. After that it was only "game manufacturing", not visionary gamedev like in the past.

And real losses for ID were ppl Like Romero or McGee, not Carmack.

Not really, he was responsible for the entire engine architecture down to small details, like physics and networking. I think, if I remember the .plan updates correctly, he was also very involved in weapon balance design, although he had some whacky ideas.

I kinda feel very negative about this... Not so much because John left iD, but because he left to develop Oculus Rift; and seeing even Carmack going the path of "immersion" over gameplay means we're probably in for at least another very very sad decade for gaming.

i played from 1999 to 2002/3 Quake3Arena & UT on the Dreamcast console with Keyboard & Mouse & MadCatz Gamepad for strafing !

and YES you can ignore it, i do it too, occulus prior is the console, now it would not run properly on them but they all are seeing the BIG $ sign

VR will never be an influence, unless prices drop substantially.

The cool and trendy games are released for the cool and trendy hardware, having in mind their most used controllers and playing conditions. A $300 accessory will not be, becoming a niche (just like QL is) and not the route to be followed by mainstream media.

It's $300 and it just came out, that is pretty impressive, which means in 2 years it might be less than half that price.

The problems mentioned above are exactly what JC is working on at the moment.

The target market will definitely be the hardcore gamers, but I could definitely see myself playing immersive single player games with it.

I seriously doubt we'll see proper id tech 6 any time soon. Even if we do, it will be not be on the same level as would Carmack do it, so...

And as someone mentioned, he probably saw what team did with Doom 4 and his engine and he didn't want to be involved with that. :)

But the real truth I think it happened is that Zenimax and Bethesda always have the final word with everything concerning id and he doesn't agree with that...so, it's better to leave and do something what you want than something what other people say to you.

Good for him, he has done amazing things for id. But with modern engines like UE with probably 100 people working on it it is hard to still compete. And he loves the hardware side of things he is now doing for Occulus. And I hopes he manages to create an awesome product for Star Citizen and the like :)

I think he will return one day and probably develop one more game before calling it quits.

On the other... Not really cared for anything "new" he/they did since at least Quake 4 (which also wasn't as good as Q3 but fun enough while it lasted) so... Shrug, guess QL is more or less unaffected and hopefully Carmack helps Oculus be the best they can be? Sounds good to me.

we all know that id software were good ad making games when you could see all the credits on one page without scrolling, don't know if there's a single relevant person from q3/rtcw days that works there right now, and we all know that these gameplay/artstyle designers were making the difference why their games had their distinct vibe, now it's officially over,

The Quake engine went on to power many games but also helped spawned some of the most important FPS franchises in history... Half Life, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Jedi Knight, Star Wars Elite Force... and not to mention the hundreds of game developers who got started making mods with id engines.

I think you are highly overrating the influence of the idtech3 graphic engine on other games: all the games you have mentioned are totally different from quake 3, in every aspect, from the ambientations to the game mechanics; the only thing they shares are a bigger or smaller percentage of the quake graphic engine, heavily modified, expanded (and bettered) to suit those games.

The point is, all of those games could have been made starting from other engines suitables at the time, without big problems.
And no one of those games have been influenced from quake's characteristics aspects.
It can't be said that Quake influenced Call of Duty 1. Or Half Life.

It's a great loss. Carmack is a technical genius. He's probably one of the most intelligent people on Earth.

However, he's not a creative genius. He can no longer help id to success. It's sad to see him go, but this will not affect us in a bad way. I wish him good luck in the future with other projects!

This is not very surprising after ID was acquired. I don't know any details about how Bethesda acquired ID in the first place but that should have limited decision making priorities.
I hope he comes up with better ideas and improves competitive gaming with better computer human interfaces.

well, if he preferred to focus on occulus, rockets or whatever, i guess working with the other programmers at id just got in the way. that's a huge amount of work, not something one can code over a weekend, expert or not.

btw, i miss the fluid, lagless feel of carmack's engines, as most modern games are console ports, with limited tweaking options and movement as if you're skating around.

Honestly I think all the evidence leads to this being a very positive thing. Carmack pretty much had the biggest influence in creating all of the most important successes of idSoftware, it's fair to say. He was always the all star in the company and the one whose natural intellectual curiousities would spark jaunts into unmapped territory, usually territory he would soon understand every nook and cranny of, whilst simultaneously attempting to push the limits of what is already established.

It's better if he is able to roam free without the shackles, in this case, of an unreasonable obligation to idSoftware for the merit that he has a profound history there. He's honestly a treasure that needs to be shared and his time has important implications-- he has still so much to offer. So that's why I believe it's a great thing.

2012 Doom 3 BFG edition (Year of: Max Payne 3, Mass Effect 3, Far Cry 3 etc)
2011 - Rage (Year of: Skyrim, Arkham City, GTA 4)
2009 - Wolfeinstein (Year of: Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty MW2)

I played with a 50ms delayed mouse for about a year.... Didn't notice a thing untill I played on someone else's pc and went OMFG THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER.
If you play with consistent lag you stop noticing it fairly fast.

This probably GOOD news for Quake. JC often said things that were anti-hardcore gaming. I think i remember him saying anything above 60fps was pointless and only for hardcore players. He wanted to make more mainstream games targeted at console gamers. No doubt he's a brilliant guy, but my guess is we will see more emphasis on established franchises in the right ways with all the shake ups at id recently.

He has been biging up the pro players on Quakecons and he is one of the main supporters of low latency gaming (something inherently hardcore)

His point was that the jump from 30fps to 60fps rendering was a big deal in perceived smoothness while the jump from 60 to 120 wasn't as big a deal when all input latencies were already low. RAGE runs at 60Hz but feels very responsive.

yeah, i think pakalolo got it wrong.

in the rage phase, jc was talking about console and pc problems in development. at first i thought a few times, he bashes pc gaming when talking about console gaming. but he just adressed different probs on two platforms.

To anyone that usually watches Carmack's keynote at QuakeCon every year. He did a tweet earlier regarding his QuakeCon keynotes.

If they don't want me to talk on stage at Quakecon next year, we'll just have to fill up the lobby like the old days. :-)

And the double jump in Quake2 is actually caused by a bug in the physics engine.

true. If you look in the design documents for Quake3 he was very much against it. That's also why Q3test originally had it disabled, until negative response from players shifted id's opinion.

this is really interesting.

I'm really interested in strafe jumping and other movement "features" of quake engines. Some people take it for granted, or underestimate importance of it, but i think that is one of key features that makes quake gameplay so interesting.

Also i see a reason why CS disabled it, they wanted more realistic experience, and they wanted to emphasise positioning/tactics over movement.

I didn't play much of UT and other games and i wonder whats the level of strafe jumping there. Also i wonder which other games out there use the same/similar system and where that kind of movement has same weight as in quake (only one i know and tried for few days is warsow)

For sceptics out there, imagine how boring the quake will be if you had to WALK to capture flag, on, lets say, Japansese Castles :D

yup, what a weird misinterpretation this is. q3 died, while cpm had/s a solid playerbase. i still wonder, why the ql staff is not understanding this. they should push the game into this direction (leave default ql as it is, but add mucccchhhh more contend for cpm), to save ql

That's a good point, and this may seem like a bit of a tangent, but if relatively complicated games (TF2, DoTA 2, LoL) can become so popular, I don't think the complexity (i.e. Quake is too complicated/old) issue holds any footing. What it has come down to is poor execution, a lack of foresight with respect to UI and other assets, no respect for the current realities of the internet-gaming, poor marketing, and a lack of a dedicated staff.

cpm is an extension of the gameplay, it adds more depth, it doesnt make it more complicated for new players, since they can still play quake more or less normally as before ... advanced players gonna annihilate them with or without cpm physics ... doesnt make a difference in the end

i havent played much other games besides quake the last years. was rage looking so much better then crysis 3... and if or if not, the games dont interest me at all. maybe a game with good physix would be nice, but this seems to be very hard to do.

idtech5 engine looks shit compared to other games out there today. look at the bf4, cod, crysis engines. just doesn't even matter. id is like years behind.

This seem like a good time to suggest reading the book Masters of Doom. It was written in 2003 and it follows Carmack and Romero from their childhood up to the release of Doom 3. I'm not a big reader but I couldn't put this book down!

the sale to bethesda was needed to finance rage and save the future of the studio.

id can do good games. they only need 25% of strength and ideas that the old games had and their fine.
