I use livestreamer to watch VODs and streams (even some YT clips), and I tune the cache value for VLC or MPlayer depending on what works best.

This is what I normally use:

livestreamer -p "cvlc --file-caching=2000" <stream or VOD> [high|best]

I tried using that command (I usually use 'livestreamer <stream> [quality setting]' but i think it only works for live streams if I'm not mistaken), but it gives me 'failed to open output: failed to execute player command: cvlc --file-caching=2000' error. what do I do wrong and is this command beneficial for live streams instead of the one I'm using? I know NOTHING about that stuff. halp plox

Maybe you don't have the command line version of VLC installed. Try -p "vlc --file-caching=2000" instead, if you have VLC installed. It works for VODs too now, even YouTube videos. Also, make sure you have the latest version of livestreamer installed.

Unfortunately my firefox locks up all the time when I play vods from the Twitch site itself...

oddly this never happens when I watch streams live.

my firefox did not lock up on a sheap linux laptop, maybe you have some RAM issue ?
Firefox itself has a buffer too, you can look up the ram usage

No, unfortunately there's no way to fast forward or rewind VODs with livestreamer... :|

You don't need to skip with jdownloader. It will identify all the parts and their order and you can select which ones you want to download.

I some where read that the twitch euro servers are shit and you need to watch them from american servers.
