It's something I always wanted to do! The reason i didn't go before is that the first 1-2 years i played, I felt i wouldn't be competitive enough for it to be worth while and the last two years I've been sick, so i couldn't go anyway. I feel like i owe it to myself to go to at least one lan before i stop playing.

Well you do get the point. And then there are different styles of maps. Cure is a pretty good map, you can easily stack up on armor when out of control. This may be a good this for some and bad for some.

If cityy makes a new duel map he should make one with less items so the map would be more about controlling the few armors there is.

I'm lower in elo then him so it's not like he doesn't understand these things or needs to be at an extremely high duel level to understand item and map control.

thats cure's main feature, eh? i can think of 3 maps in the map-pool that have this "feature" too.

item-layout is 1 thing. and its actually a problem that can be solved very easily. creating a map that has a good flow and offers interesting fights however, thats a different thing (yes i know "good flow" is vague, but thats why its so hard to achieve.)

Well it was a critique from me on the map, ii had to play it against a bot just to check it out again and there is armor and health everywhere. If you run through the map there are health bubbles and armor or armor shards literally everywhere. After every fight you can stack up and be 100 - 50 or 100 - 75 easily.

I have to admit that i have not played on it enough to make a completely fair judgement. But compared to playing ZTN so far thats how i felt.

Is there any good duel maps with really few armor and health on it? I don't have the statistics in my head.

But i do agree with you that ZTN should always be in a map pool.

simple fix to the map pool is -sinister +ztn.. anyone who wants to replace toxicity b4 sinister is foolish imo. SInister is i think, unanimously the worst map out of the 5, yet people (mostly people who dont duel) want to remove toxicity..

Sinister maybe a worse map, but its easier to be played when your opponent has better map knowledge. In toxicity its all repe repe repe.

I think at least one of the trio has to be in because those are the maps in which the level is the highest therefore the better matches, ztn and aerowalk are the two main classics of the whole quake series and particularly of q3 (dm6 is the q3 map par excellence), also are the most played maps in the game (about 66% of duel matches), ztn is maybe the most balanced map of the whole QL list, and finally most probably those three are the most beloved by players and by the audience. Those are five reasons, which are yours? Hopefully they will be technical instead of emotional.

First off, I don't get angry at the computer and I almost never attack people on the internet, including on this site since 2005. The tone differences in this thread show that. I much prefer arguments over getting emotional, so we all learn something and the best decision can be made.

I do see the difference, however is just a matter of grammar instead of the actual content, and while I do agree what I wrote right now is not a 100% fact it has to be said there are tons of reasons to think that way. Furthermore, in other games that is the case (classic maps) and in Q3/QL until last year what I wrote was a 100% fact, not a debatable opinion.

Now, what I find funny are three things:
1.- So far Koziol is the only person that has a problem with "my tone", ever on this site.
2.- He does disagree with #92 ("silly points of view")
3.- When he does disagree he never, ever backups his claims but resorts to vague phrases such as "especially that I often know for a FACT that you're wrong. " (false authority) and "just like I have the right to ridicule the living shit out of you and vice versa" (implying I don't know what I'm talking about), both which are circular and authority rhetorical fallacies ....that he in particular shouldn't be making in first place when we are talking about quake such as on this thread (check his ql account, qlranks and esr, then compare them to mine if you will). I know I know, but it was perfectly appropriate for what he does and for his arguments when he never explains himself, just using those phrases. If anything he shouldn't be talking about quake in first place, ever, and I don't see why he is in this site since he doesn't play and never did.

Anyway, the discussion is about the map pool not about me being disliked, trolled and stalked by one person. In particular it is about why my points on #92 are "silly", with actual arguments, on why ztn, dm6 or aerowalk should be in (isn't it weird that someone gets angry because of such an insignificant thing as map pools and grammar?).

Though it has to be said that in some aspects there are facts, with a right and a wrong answer known before hand (people that disagree are wrong), and in others it's a matter of subjective opinions in which all sides are respectable, without a right or a wrong answer at least in theory (people that disagree are right only if they have founded reasons behind what they believe in, reasons that at least a part of should be backed up by facts that are learned and comprehended by knowing about the actual subject before hand). Assertions do exist, not everything is "I think" or "could be" and on opinions there is a legitimate doubt when somebody doesn't explain his reasons, particularly when it's a fact he doesn't have the knowledge.

Furthermore, even if there are debatable topics, without a known right or wrong answer, in the end .in practice- there are still consequences of following a determinate choice or opinion, so after all there is a right and wrong answer for in everything in life, based on the perspective used for determining positive or negative consequences. The prism for looking what's a correct choice is mainly the objective to be achieved, particularly clear in business decisions such as this one (as small as it may be). Even the so called purely opinionated matters have negative consequences, such as prohibiting abortion.

Right now classic maps is matter of opinion, though highly debatable and with the majority of the community in one side (ztn. dm6 or aero in), but shortly ago it wasn't a matter of subjective, respectable choices but an undeniable fact, with only one right answer over the span of about 10 years. Had the discussion started one month ago, before the announcement, then Koziol would be 100% wrong in what was a fact, and will be if one of the trio makes it to DH:W 2013.

Now, what interests me the most is the consequences of following one choice -based on opinions- instead of the other, because this is not just theorizing and there will be a correct business decision and a wrong one. We'll see if not having ztn (and others) in DH will be detrimental (the wrong opinion in practice) or not for what DH wants, but so far we know toxjq is not attending because of the current pool and in the past cooller didn't as well, both of which that attract tons of viewers on their own and also watching known maps is more attractive than unknown's.

Whatever, over complicating things for grammar. videogames and online forums. We'll see how it goes and my points on what I (and the majority) think is best for quake are clear already.

I want to see those surprises. as for the pool itself: I don't like toxicity either so I suggested swapping it for one of the new maps (like silence) instead. otherwise it's awesome. to clarify: it's not one of the instances where 'I know for a fact you're wrong'. this is one of the opinions i disagree with.

In first place, you didn't address a single point shown in the previous posts.

Secondly:

Since I've been here for quite a while and you haven't, search tournament history from 2012 and before that up to the usage of aerowalk on lans: I don't recall a single one that didn't feature ztn, dm6 or aerowalk. In other words, it's basically terrorism that they aren't. It's a fact, not an opinion.

In competitions classics are of the essence for several reasons already mentioned and others such as the classics produce the best matches because of experience, and this tournament doesn't feature a single one of the three most classic maps of them all, which coincidentally are the by far most played maps in the whole game. If anything what's harmful is removing maps to the point old school players are not attending and is not the first time this happens at a DH (zamuz, tox, cooller) and adding maps that are underplayed, both which lead to fewer viewers and a worse spectacle overall, which isn't what should be done particularly considering the last DH was cancelled because of lack of players and viewers. LANs have to play safe and there's nothing safer than ztn.

Also surprises aren't good per se. Actually it can be said it is the opposite, because it means the best players aren't making it to the finals because of map pool changes. That doesn't happen in proper competitions, in which the game is to be the best within the same rules, not changing them so others can win.

Another thing that is not an opinion is what we ESR posters and the players think (one of the last year's DH had an internal poll for players), both which believe at least ztn (old, classic) should be in and toxicity (new) shouldn't be. It's not only a personal opinion but what the majority believes..

But whatever, I'm fairly confident ztn will be in despite what you say. We'll see.

Finally, do you have to swear and insult every time you write something? That's kind of a tone, you know.

If you only play the same maps, then there is never room for any new maps to become 'classics'. Imagine if we just stopped on the first set of good maps and never changed because the old maps are so good and classic ect.

In the DH pool 4 out of 5 maps are new. There's plenty of room to have a classic ...like the equivalent of de_dust2.

Out of those four three are controversial. I expect cure to be in regardless, sinister as well though the map isn't proven by no stretch (was extensively modified a short while ago) and people here aren't fond of toxicity, the main candidate to go out.

Also, new doesn't necessarily mean good nor better, even less so a future classic. There are good reasons why the classics are classics while most new maps are just dismissed sooner or later. For example in QL there's nothing like dm13 and so far I don't see cure having anything that makes it special, a reason to keep it or become a classic over the pool of acceptable maps composed of 10 picks give or take, and that's the most accepted new map..

i guess if you consider new 2003 then yeah those are all new... but actually cure and sinister are the only new maps in this pool, tox and FH have been thoroughly played over the last couple of years. every map gets played out eventually, even the great ones. i agree cure might not make into the all time classics, but maybe it can... sinister definitely will.. (if its not just disregarded and replaced with a 'classic map')

I don't play duel and haven't seen much of Sinister to comment on it, so from the maps I know Toxicity is the worst and least entertaining to spectate, I just don't want to see it being played in biggest Quake event we have.

There should be older maps like hub, dm6 and ztn available to play in such events, they are the core of Quake, are fun to watch and have amazing design.

I think bigger mappoll and some kind of system that would ensure balanced picking/eliminating of maps would be preferred to having shitty mappoll for sake of being "new".

Negotiate removing 1 new map (tox or sinister are the ones with less popularity) so tox and other great players participate!!! So many are asking for it...

Whats your QL profile and Notable achievements?

Mmm, was on the CPL World Tour in '05, made it to finals. Also top 20 in points @ WSVG for Quake 4. Lots of top 16s/top 32s at major events between '04-'07. Also lots of achievements in other non-duel games but they are irrelevant (2x Canadian Trackmania champ no big deal). To be honest I haven't played Quake in a long time but if I got invited I was gonna use the next 2 months to practice nonstop. I obviously have the experience to make it worthwhile. I'll be at DHW regardless so if they'd rather have an eSPORTS LEGEND(me) in the tournament as opposed to some random Swede to fill spots then put me in. This is the most serious post I've ever made on this website.

Also my ESR account level is VIP so everything else is irrelevant cause thats all that matters.

We need Strenx, Dahang, ZeRo4, Toxiq, Pavel, Av3k and of course - Cooller. This would be 'the' greatest Quake tournament if these guys would attend along with the current line up.

The tournament should have losers bracket etc like Quakecon, which is already standard in fighting game tournaments like Street Fighter 4 and Starcraft tournaments etc. makes it more fun to watch too

so apparently norwegian air does not fly to landvetter, how long and how much is it from stockholm arlanda to jonkoping? might be relevant for the nordmenn coming as well.

If you live in Oslo I'd recommend going with http://www.nettbuss.se/. They're going straight from Oslo (through Gothenburg) to Jönköping.

I think it's about 3,5 hours by car from Arlanda to Jönköping. If possible travel to Stockholm Skavsta instead, it's much closer.

Would like to see Dahang, Cooller, Av3k, Strenx, and Stermy going to round out the top players, but it's already a very good sign-up.

Dahang and Stermy haven't played since Quakecon though, and Strenx has been inactive for a month and counting due to school. K1llsen is signed up, but has been inactive for a month and needs to start practising. Spart1e has been playing, but he had been inactive for awhile; I'd like to see him do well.

I don't know what Cooller and Av3k are planning, but I'm optimistic on them going.
