Hm I think we shouldn't have a problem with twitch for DH:

-DH and twitch are partners so I would imagine they will both collaborate to bring the the best service (server priorities and dedicated bandwidth for their streams)
-the DH streams should be popular enough to have priority over other channels to not suffer bandwidth problems like the relatively small FACEIT and Zoot streams.

For bigger games like SC2 or Dota2 im sure but for ql....not really

Have a map pool that favors cooller so he shows up, like ztn, dm13, t9, t7, aero, t4, dismemberment.

The same applies to tons of players though, which is the problem of featuring 'new' maps at LANs. A safe map is the one that doesn't make people not sign up because of not knowing it, which is a major issue in a sort of dying activity/game. On the other hand, having the same 5 maps over and over stagnates the scene. so there has to be new maps, at least from time to time, and revive others that for some reason are not picked nowadays even though they are great if not better than the current ones.

What I'd like to see (personally, not what should be decided) is a mix between timeless classics (ztn), new stuff (sinister) and forgotten classics (aerowalk).

Boring, learn the maps do not use maps that are as old as my kids. Four of the five maps you just mentioned are and if we want to get away from quake becoming an old game for relics then we need to have the new and interesting maps played. Its good for viewers, its good for the game, its just over all a good thing.

You want the money learn to play the new maps that is what all successful games are doing out there.

It's not good for viewers that they don't know the maps and a pool that has way too many new maps discourages players to attend, as we all like to play what we like to instead of being forced to and it substantially decreases the chances of winning. Also new maps make games be quite a bit more random, which makes them less 'professional', and new doesn't mean good or better (is silence better than aerowalk? fuse than dm13?).

All that is known info from what we have seen over the years: LANs have to play safe or they don't do as well as possible. Though as I said there has to be new maps as well, so it is a balance in which in LANs there cannot be 3, 4 or 5 new maps in a 5 pool. That can be done in online cups.

What I'm adding to that is it could be a good idea to include forgotten classics, that players and viewers already know but they aren't used anymore so it has a similar effect to adding new maps, which is playing/watching something refreshing..

Another point is what 'new' maps are candidates to be chosen. I think it'd be absurd for LANs to literally force maps that have no acceptance in online cups, like fuse, so the only ones that could be picked are new-ish and that have seen quite a lot of activity already, like silence.

The most successful competitive games of them all never, ever change their core, whereas in QL alone there's like 15 LAN-worthy maps to choose from, which is immense in a fps game. Most probably there isn't another game in DH that has that much variety.

Like I said though I was just going off the map pool you suggested which has four of the five maps being older then 15 years.

Now if you maybe suggested three maps that were old classics like:

Bloodrun, Lost World, and Vertical Vengeance

Then had two more current maps like:

Furious Heights, and Cure

That gives you a well rounded map pool that has small fast paced interesting maps as well as the medium to larger duel maps that can create very close and interesting matches I wouldn't have said anything.

No. There's nothing random about playing new maps. There are only players who don't know them as well. That doesn't make it random. Players will still take informed decisions. They might take more sub-optimal decisions, but that doesn't make them random. Players who would likely lose against their opponent on ztn may have a better chance at winning on a new map. That doesn't mean it's random nor that they don't deserve their victories when that happens.

Really, I hate how some people use the word "random" sometimes.

I just want to clarify : by "new maps are not random" I didn't mean "every new map is good". I only meant that "new" doesn't imply "random".

If someone is doing his task professionally, and we expect pro-players to do so, then those categorized therein should be able to adapt to new maps easier. Due to their routine more experienced players will have better chances to beat new players on new maps since they have a bigger repertoire of memories and experiences to decide for certain outcomes in standard situations.

Therefore the (general) argument is weakened that old players don't have the same chances as new players on new maps. Old players who don't succeed on new maps are either not willing to learn the map layout, routes, spots where you can hear what, spawnpoints, and so on, or have not optimized their individual learning process.

It seems that rapha is one of the best examples of players who are able to adapt quite fast, not only related to new maps, but also to different opponent gaming styles, hardware equipment and the tournament environment.

Its not about new blood owning on new maps its about keeping quake fresh and interesting. Quake has long been known as the best FPS game out there but only in this very small circle of players. If we want quake to grow we need to constantly be trying to show the viewers that quake is evolving and making changes. My logic is the more viewers we draw in the more interested other people will be in playing the game.

SC2 and LoL have large viewer basis due to the fact that they have tons of money being thrown at it but they also do the other little things right too, like introducing new maps, adding small little changes to the game in the strength and agility of characters or races.

We have a whole new age group of kids growing up playing games now and almost none of them know about quake. I know this because I work with kids half my age and they all have never even heard of the game. I think the best way to introduce the game to that demographic is to slowly increase viewer basis by having quality weekly streams that have interesting and new things going on. The only way to continue to keep them interested in what quake is doing is to have different map pools which offer tons of variety. Like mentioned above by mouse we have at least 15 maps that are excepted by the majority of the competitive community. Why not make it so that those maps are all used throughout the whole year instead of just a select few which seem to constantly get used in map pools.

It also contributes to the old school players completely destroying newer players on a map that is 15+ years old. I think quake would have a lot more interesting matches with new maps. Granted he may not pick it as one of his choices but at least he gives himself a good chance to win on it now.

I could be completely of base though since the CTF community loves the map Ironworks where i think its just a terrible map that has awkward flow and is way to small for a 4v4 based team game. It reminds me of playing Q3CTF1 as a competitive map control mid and you win the game. To me a good map needs everything to be balanced equally for a team game and Ironworks is not.

They have a large viewerbase because those games are popular to begin with. Quake has a very solid players to viewers ratio, miles better than LoL does even when in that game they directly advertise streams.

Also tournament money doesn't have much to do with viewers, as we've seen plenty of times already. Exposure and potential viewers do.

About changes, in SC2 (the little I know about it) changing maps doesn't matter as much as it does in quake, where viewers have to learn how to play the new maps first (or watch them a lot) in order to understand what's going on at all, which doesn't happen in SC2.
In LoL I know my fair bit and the game never ever changes, because there's only one relevant map that is practically untouched since the game started, like an eternal ztn-only cup. The meta has always been quite similar as well, never having a truly major change, just repeating the proven formulas over and over and good players that want to win already know what's the character types and stats to focus on (high mobility, free damage and support abilities, then pick characters in which skill differences matter, which are very few in the game).

I think the best way to introduce the game to that demographic is to slowly increase viewer basis by having quality weekly streams that have interesting and new things going on. The only way to continue to keep them interested in what quake is doing is to have different map pools which offer tons of variety.

Making quake popular has nothing to do with streams nor with introducing new maps in tournaments. Quake stream numbers are very much lackluster for that to happen, so not the greatest form of advertisement (at most it will introduce 100 players and out of those 10 will pay for premium/pro), and people won't recognize games changes because they do not know the game to begin with nor what map variety means. The only time quake is sort of relevant is when it is right before another game's finals, which isn't great either (think of it as watching dota2 before the quake finals. Does it make you want to play dota? Do you watch it all?)

The way to do it with these types of games is to be the trendy thing to play. The last time quake was was in 1996 lol. For that the game should be in steam with full integration, have acceptable graphics and have very much attractive gameplay to the target audience (lets say Titanfall-like), among other measures depending on budget. You know, like all games in the industry do. Quake is not special.

So with all that said, changing tournament maps is a measure to keep current viewers entertained on the long run, those can get bored of the old maps to begin with. Outsiders do not care about what map they are watching, so the impact is in between quake. It's pretty naive to think removing ztn is going to bring millions of teenagers to quake, especially since they do not know what a blood run is.
The sole big impact maps can have in LANs are breaking the event, making people not watch it or attend. Everyone will attend and watch if ztn is there, but not everyone if it is replaced with fuse . We've seen this before, which is why I say LANs have to play safe.

is mastery a bad thing? I think it is more entertaining to watch the pinnacle of something instead of some 30 to 0 because the other player doesn't know the map. Also some already known yet dropped maps are fast paced without enormous amounts of +backing, like aerowalk and hektik,

And the better players will destroy the new school no matter the map. It's been like that since the quake3 days, because the old school know how to duel better and how maps play so they get used to them faster, including to new games altogether. Of course there will be some new one map wonder and others that refuse to play the new maps at all, but still the new don't make it to the top16 and the old win the other 2 or 3 maps.


And finally, I have to repeat that new doesn't mean good nor better. Bloodrun is a classic not only because it's been played for ages, but also because quality-wise it is better than 95% of available maps.

you are right it`s time to build a dm13ish map but I don`t think it is that easy to build a map with the goal to reconstruct a similar play feeling

overall building a map is hard as hell if its to be used in duel.

I'd like to see Campgrounds, Blood Run, Furious Heights, Lost World, Aerowalk and +2 with FACEIT providing the livestream production. With QuakeCon being where it was, Sweden (and how DreamHack is set up) is a good setting to see what they can really do as a production team.

Preferably Calipt would make a surprise appearance back to provide color commentary for the tournament (alongside TosspoT would be $$$), but i guess that's unlikely. DDK definitely deserves it after all his work with FACEIT also. Hopefully Joe or 2GD can at least find time to cover a game between their no doubt busy DH schedules.

I think there's a direct connection with bus from Copenhagen. Trains are generally very expensive in Sweden, so I suggest travelling by bus. try: www.swebus.se and www.nettbuss.se

Gothenburg and Stockholm (Skavsta) are the two closest airports. Stockholm (Arlanda) is rather far away, so make sure to go to Skavsta instead
