What mode do you cast? Duel only?

casting on your own is easier and harder at the same time, while you don't have to worry about cooperating with another guy/girl you also can't benefit from someone elses skills. the only way to get better and more comfortable is by doing it more. you're always gonna screw up but it's all about finding ways how to make yourself feel awkward about the mistakes you make. for a solo cast it's best to mix play by play with analytics all in one just like with a duo cast, problem is that you have to do both. if can't do the analytics then just stick with play by play untill you get more experienced and comfortable.

One thing i tend to sometimes be annoyed about is that most casters tend to think that every second of the game had to be filled with talking. Its okay to be silent for 5 or even 10 seconds every now and then if it isnt happening to much in the game..

cast demos. lots of them. and pause demos when something is happening to analyse it. if you learn how to vocally analyse a demo and make correct calls on what is going on next, you'll half way there. you can see the effects of this when fraze or twister are casting for example.

The trick to play-by-play is not to simply describe whats on screen, but to place it in context.

You do not need to have an amazing understanding of the game to comment on this, but the more you understand the greater you can expand.

For example:

"vor is shooting rockets"

That is a simple description of the events we can all see and many people would suggest this is radio style. However it's not, it's just not very good.

Something better would be:

"vor is shooting rockets, to stop the enemy attacking round the corner"

It adds a bit of context to the situation and justifies why its worth talking about.

That statement itself is really basic and could be improved many times, but its important to try and get that mindset as soon as possible.

Next you would add in data points like the amount of ammo left, how long till the armour he is protecting will spawn.

On top of that you add greater situational context. How long will he need to do this for till his objective changes.

You can then build on to an opinion (this is where more experience comes in, and when you have played at a high level comes naturally).

For example:

"vor is doing an excellent job here defending the red armour room, spamming rockets round the doorway. However he will need to be replaced soon as he is low on ammo and he has the best stack for battlesuit which is up in 15 seconds."

Obviously you want it to be as efficient and concise as possible, but also don't be afraid to just cut out mid sentence if the situation changes.

Effectively though once you have set the scene as a play-by-play, you have added a little context but not over the top amount, that is when your colour commentator is given room to share their insight.

They might talk further about if it's a good choice, what the player could be doing differently, liken it to the previous situation or talk in a more broad strategic or tactical sense. They could even talk about elements that are not even on screen.

If you are doing both roles its a hard balance, but I would perfect play-by-play as much as you can first.

Once you have the basic descriptive stuff done, you can work on your delivery more which is important. People really respect natural emotions though so don't try and force reactions if it doesn't feel right. More you just need to let go of the social constraints that would stop you getting excited normally and just go with the flow.

abuse "oh ma gawd", "that rocket", "clutch rail" and "i think its gg now"

on a more serious note - try to NOT talk about whats happening. you will do it anyway but unless you are really good at it and people got used to your voice it ends up beeng just annoying. example "he did hit that rail" is something your viewer can see, theres no point in telling him.
- try to not state the obvious but your conclusions instead like "after hitting that rail he wont be challenged for mega".
- if possible give information that the viewer cannot see (like enemy hp) or interesting background data (how much times did player x played this map in the last couple of week) <- theres a reason professional sport commentators have a numberz dude next to them
- try to have anecdotes ready. hyping up the viewers before the match by bringing the tension to them is a BIG bonus (x has lost to y in a close match last week and is looking for revenge now)
- be as informed as possible about the players that are playing (especially for the point above) or you wont have anything to talk about other than the obvious
- inform yourself about what maps are going to be played and get in contact with players/admins to not miss games/decisions/mappicks.

^- the above can be summarized as "try to gather every information possible, make people inform you" nothing is as anticlimitac as a caster that a) only can talk about the stuff the viewer sees with his own eyes b) has no clue in the same moments the viewer has non (what map is going to be played? is there a game atm? did these guys play before and which result? how many maps are going to be played? whos going to fight who next? what does winning/loosing mean for the players in terms of brackets? how good/bad/much has someone played lately? why do i not stream the game right now? (technical issues, admin decisions, players delaying stuff...))

and as a general note: aslong as you are not VERY good at it, dont try to make tactical predictions or rate decisions of players. in most cases they are either pretty obvious or you make yourself look silly by false predicting.
instead try to second-guess them "he won that fight because he delayed mega earlier" "that decision from 30 seconds ago now paid off" you can hardly be wrong when doing it this way and the viewer has a much better "feck that was genious execution" experience

I feel it's important not to forget about the very basics:
if you are even halfways serious about this then make sure to work on your voice and how you use your microphone.
also try to have some decent production value - think overlays, intro/outro, logo..
