I have to go with 2GD, though, since I mainly follow Duel-tournaments and he just provides such great analysis while doing play-by-play commentary, which I think is something many other duel-casters lack in their repertoire. :)

Dunno whether it was dis or vor casting a couple of duels at dreamhack (at least i think it was DH) some time ago. I remember a game on dm13, where dis/vor casted a game of Cypher vs some random in the early stages of the tournament. That was both awesome & hilarious.

Seriously though, I really do rate vor. I have known him for around a decade now and his knowledge of games and essecially Quake is amazing.

His technical skill is astounding in so many games and his judgment of situations is close to perfect. I am really glad I get to cast with him and we just do it because we enjoy it.

To note vor has NEVER had anything from Level Up TV, not a penny. I had to force him to accept a video capture card so he could stream from his PS3. He does it for the enjoyment and to create something others can enjoy more. He is not doing it to be famous or to grab every dollar bill he can like some casters out there.

I feel very lucky to have been given the chance to cast at DreamHack and QuakeCon, but the best casts have always been with my good pal vor.

For me, Dis and vor are the only casters I can listen to talk for 3 hours straight about various topics without any game getting streamed. So even though I love TDM, I don't even bother if no game is on, I just want to listen to them.

Seriously guys, do more podcasts. I enjoyed the hell out of it when one day all games got wildcarded but you guys kept talking for the whole evening, touching every topic from gaming to rape. I miss the good old days of Level Up TV. Wish you were paid to do this so you wouldn't be busy working other jobs.

I do not think either Dis or vor is the single best shoutcaster (although they are among the best). But they are the best duo for sure. That chemistry between them, you don't see that anywhere else.

Day9 is good, probably the best. I don't like his show (pink unicorns and carebears aren't my thang nugga), but he's a VERY GOOD shoutcaster. Let's not mince words here... the whitey has it goin' on.

I think Idra could be really good from an analysis standpoint. A guy like me would probably enjoy his casts very much, though I haven't really heard him.

Wheat used to be a good quake shoutcaster back in the day. Some might disagree, but I think his radio / tv voice suited the straight forward play-by-play really well. As for sc2... its just not his kind of game.

Gay9 is the sleaziest fag around. He has some good reads, yeah, but I just cant get over his personality. Its so obvious his faking his attitude so much, that I find it hard to believe people are not paying any attention to it. And for example, I think it was MLG Dallas 1-2 years ago, he and some other guy were rambling in the studio and Gay9 said with a disgusted face: "Oh no, we have another game coming... I cant wait this event to be over, get my money and head back home". One of his rare moments of honesty.
On the other hand, tasteless, gay9's brother, used to be really, really fucking awesome at casting scbw. Too bad hes now yet another example that doing drugs is not the best idea.

Thanks for the compliments, us Brits have an unfair advantage with the language compared to non-native speaking.

We did it from late 2009 and never had more than around 3 weeks gap. This year I have a new job and just no extra time to stream. There is no real possibility of making it a full time job in itself and I am not sure I would want it to be anyway. I really just enjoy casual streams with vor.

Yes the language is one reason, but for me there are very few american casters i enjoy listen to. I guess for me as a swede england is just closer socially and culturally, brits are also generally more fun, for me that is.

Generally Europeans have complimented my voice and Americans criticised. I think its a cultural thing that Americans like the deeper, gruff, manly voice and mine sounds too soft for them.

Not only voice, cant say jehar, greasedscottsman etc have that much more manly voices, guess its more an accent thing. To me its more about the style of casting. Also one thing that makes for example you and vor work so good is you obviously know eachother well. Making the "shows" seem more genuine perhaps.

I think you have to differ between a sole and two caster combination. As a solo caster you require a lot more skills (play-by-play, telling background stories of the players (style clash) and game analysis) which are often times not met by the individual caster. Also, it can be really strenous to cast for a long period when you are alone. The quality that caster often give over such a period fluctuates.

Just compare it with the normal "casting" of games such as soccer, football, basketball.. you name it. Tournaments often do not last 8h like they do in in Quake Live. I think people tend to forget that.

First, I understand that most Quakers want a pro to cast games. This is true for me as well. It is so nice to see rapha, cooller, zsx, av3k cast. But they will not have the stamino to do it for a very long time, also they are bored casting low tier games. People as such a really good for insight and usually just work best in quarter/semi finals. Everything else is just pain.

See what I like about issue is he is actually entertaining to listen to. He has passion for the game and was actually a very good player so he understands the mindset and the skills required.

I wish very much that you had kept casting for the last few years with us, I would imagine you would be one of the best.

I totally agree with your points about pros casting. One or two games as a co-caster here or there but not all the time. I actually think it highlights just how poor Quake commentary is, if most people would rather have pros than actual casters.

I think while its nice to hear rapha's analysis of the first spawn for 3 solid minutes of a map or two, if he was casting all the time people would get pretty bored. I actually doubt he would keep casting like that either. There is a tendency when you start to just analyse, which over time develops more the way of being descriptive and play-by-play. Finding the balance is the key.

I get your point Disrepute and I very much agree. I appreciate the opportunity lvlup has given me to cast some duel as well as tdm games. However, to be honest, I knew there was no room for me in casting tdm. You guys were perfect for each other - and I mean that. I would always cast when you guys had games but other than that I was fine with how the things were.

Also when I was done with dreamhack in 2010 I took the criticism hard that the community voiced. Firstly, because I listen to what others say and second because I was agreeing with them. My duel cast back then was simply not good enough and that originated from the fact that 90% of my life I had been playing TDM. If I had to make a guess, I would say that over a year in total time played I've played tdm!!! I am 28 years old now. And I have been playing way before I created this esr account (that was 2002).

You see, in my opinion, If I had taken a different path namely played duel from the very beginning, I would be the among the best caster in duel. No doubt. I have roughly 3000 duel games on my account. This is the experience I can use when I cast games.

But probably has you have experience as well, you do not get paid in Quake for casting. Sure, if you do it on a level of dediction like ddk, zoot and ins are doing it right now you can maybe hope to make a buck or two. But overall, I have to make a decision because as much as I love Quake as a hobby, it does not pay my rent. I know this is sad for some people, but at the current state I simply cannot afford casting for an entire day.

I just want to highlight the fact that I love quake, that I love casting (mostly because I LOVE speaking the English language) and I will try to enrich our rather small community with a cast or some other kind of content. We deserve it.

I haven't watched Quake in a while but I watched the last two FaceIts and I'm sorry to see how bad the casters are. If you compare them to the ones who cast other games (for example the League of Legends casters) they are seriously painful. Zoot has improved and is so much better than the other FaceIt ones, but he isn't with FaceIt anymore?
Secondly, Dis and Vor are not what I would call amazing casters instead I would say they cast well but that is secondary to their relationship and entertainment role that they provide (which some might argue is casting and if we do then they are great casters). *

And 2GD and Joe Miller were the best casters, I had no idea what Quake was and had never played an FPS before Quake but I stumbled across their IEM Dubai when I was looking for a WoW VoD on IEM (and they were live on the stream) and I just kept playing because of how good they were.

Observing 2GD, I can see his alpha antics like I do when I go to any party. He needs a special someone to make him feel like the boss witty clown, while at the same time acquiring his respect.

By the way you call him alpha makes it negative. What you are saying is that he is confident, charismatic and charming. I see this too, but instead of taking it badly for some reason I enjoy how he is and Joe as his partner was a great team due to Joe's ability and 2GD's entertaining persona.

I find Rapha very dull to listen to, I have no idea why people suggest he gives incredible insight into the game. He often says either obvious things or completely hypothetical situations that could have happened - I don't find that impressive.

Secondly, what is wrong with being imposing (or what is good about unimposing?), what is there to say 2GD isn't emotionally sound, nor can we say Rapha is either, then why is that bad? And 2GD isn't respected? That's news to me, also I see no reason for someone to be respected when I tune in for entertainment and gaming.

And to pick up on your other comment how can you enjoy DDK? From my perspective his is camera awkward and lacks any fluidity in his speech, which translates particularly when casting. He also lacks emotive intonations or a shifting vocabulary. Every cast you can expect the same words (for example 'engagement') said in a rather robotic way (almost falsely given different pitches). Everything about his interaction with the game is poorly done from my side of the monitor.

That said I still appreciate his efforts towards Quake.

Being witty, fun, alpha, and basically THE BOSS is fine with me brah! Don't misunderstand me.

I think you are right about the quality of casting being poor in Quake compared to other titles. That is probably due to the talent pool. Pretty much anybody that wants to talk on stream can in Quake. We see examples regularly of guys that can barely hold down a normal conversation being the lead caster at LANs.

Whats even more shocking to me is that they are lauded for their ability. It truly is perplexing. I actually preferred it when we started out casting in 2009 and got a lot of criticism, now everybody just loves every random that mumbles bollox in-between heavy breathing down a mic.

It is kind of unbelievable the situation Quake has found itself in when we compare the year of release of Quake Live to LoL.

The talent pool also gets diluted at the level of language. The "top" casters in Quake are all Brits or Americans because everyone else sounds weird (with exceptions of course). I could perfectly well bring witty remarks and a more interesting fluid cast if I could do it in Dutch, but my spoken English just isn't that good. Now last time I checked the Dutch/Belgian community, there aren't many people to reach in that region and English reaches further anyway.

I don't think it would make a difference. Quakers watch Quake, the rest isn't looking for it or turns it off because they like MOBA/RTS more and/or Quake is too unrealistic for other FPS players (COD, BF, even TF2 perhaps), etc..

I think we would enjoy it more and it would be more enjoyable for new viewers.

Although I personally agree with your first point and the innuendo behind it (aka thx baldy for your coverage, now there's no quake@DHS13), but I completely disagree with the rest of your post.

What is perplexing is your opinion: people are lauded for spending their free time and hardware resources in order to showcase games the spectators otherwise wouldn't be able to watch. You went inactive post-clanbase EC, however there has been an influx of cups and tournaments (125fps,FaceIT and more), and streams are required for an audience that has been accustomed to Quake content. And the official streams tend to follow a level of professionalism. As the lesser streams, well, what is the exact point of criticising them? It's more of a fanbase sub-culture rather than anything on a professional level. Just quakers who wanted to show their mates games.

Finally, streamer amounts are directly proportional to playerbases: for example there are at the time of writing 52 (!) sc2 streams with a at least a thousand individual viewers each, and as the level of competition becomes fiercer, the quality of the streams must be nearing perfection in order to achieve any form of popularity. Quake has a much smaller playerbase, and nonetheless there are great streams of lesser popularity (not mentioning the major FACEit, levelUP, 125fps and ZootLive ones) such as Inferno's stream, Lanf's aAa and Vamp's SadlyTV which all have proferssional production values. It is sad that Quake playerbases are very low, but that;s the result of a massive marketing clusterfuck nobody out of the industry would probably know, or tell about.

And I am not sure where exactly you see "lack of criticism", as both on twitch and on esreality it is possible to find raging pedants offended by commentating style or at least one of the on-screen commentators, regardless which stream, caster or event it is, no matter of the actual quality of said event. On top of which, in the golden days of QL casting in 2009 level up tv, despite Mr Florin's tech brofessionalism on your side, was up against a company spearheaded by an idiot Scouser who was unable to finish a sentence without adding "yeah?" at the end. (and inferno was part of it, sorry bro but that guy was a massive retard).

And the people that "Mumble bollox in-between heavy breathing" might be aware of their mistakes and limitations, partially through VOD self-analysis and partially from all the fan lauding, And possibly try to evaluate and change them through testing and excercising? In 2009 Trance was not a part of Level Up TV, it was me, vor and nvc. We encouraged others to stream to help us all improve and did not see it as competition. The only issue we had with HS.tv was when they tried to get exclusive rights to the nations cup TDM, where they would stream silent streams. That got resolved.

You seem to have taken it personally, but it wasn't directed at you. Even so you cant defend breathing down a mic. If you cant do a stream without doing it then you have to accept you are not suitable for commentary.

In summary we agree that the casting level is lower than it could be (that includes ME) and this means Quake is not portrayed as well as it could be to a new audience. This makes it harder to grow that audience. But you are right that its really the lack of popularity of the game that stops the growth.

If Quake was a popular game on LoL's level do you honestly think any of us that commentate Quake would be employed to do it?

Sorry to intercept here, I remember the exclusivity of streaming quite well and it was offered to us, not demanded by us. The event organiser was so happy with the casts and we had such a team then that we could have covered most of the games. That ordeal made Crystal_Method leave actually and I think you (levelup) actually had your own exclusive streams later on. That and the levelup/HSTV merger that failed made it very hard for me to "like" levelup, but I'm happy to say that that is all far away and left behind and I recognize the effort and value that levelup brought to Quake, now. It also made for healthy competition trying to out-do eachother.

It was agreed between Crystal_Method and the organisers, who then backed out of the agreement once I complained. Crystal_Method stated that he/HSTV deserved exclusive rights because of the hard work he/HSTV had put in. I disagreed that it was a good thing for the community at that stage and I still would have that opinion now.

We have never had exclusive rights to anything, never asked for them and never wanted them. I even let anybody who wanted stream our own show match, stream it.

However I do think in certain instances exclusive rights make sense. For example Faceit.

I don't know what happened with joining forces between us as nvc was dealing with that, but I think it is a shame we did not. We could have made quite a team.

I think it was because we didn't like the name levelup and you didn't like the name holys1t (although back then we already had our minds set for a name change and some time later came up with ground-zero). There was also FOR3CAS7 and you that needed to get along for it to work :)

I tune in to sc2 stream once in a few months and almost every time turn it off withing 2 minutes. Speech defects, terrible pronouncing, dull voices - mostly. I think we are not doing that bad compared to them.

As for the rest, I think a lot of people take it as theres no choice, thus negative feedback would only discourage those people casting events. Depends on what names in particular do you have in mind.

On the other hand I dont feel that anyone besides ddk takes the negative feedback seriously. Nowadays, that is. Its more like 'Im saving the community, bitches.'

Can you give examples of people? It could be the person's personality (not able to cope with comments) or sometimes I get feedback based purely on personal preference. Like the killbeep to name a tiny example.

ddk's philosophy is about analysing your game and working on different elements to improve. If Quake was even slightly professional EVERY player at the top level would do this, and probably require coaches to assist them.

Quake is not professional though, its just a laugh.

I suppose at some level - a level much greater than mine, the analysis you speak of that is so common many other places, makes sense. But at the same time that kind of analysis can be counter productive (initially) to those that know but can't explain.

If the level progresses more and more, then you become more and more correct, I think.

The thing about choosing a "best" shoutcaster is that this person needs to work well both alone and with any other caster. Rapha comes to mind as a counterexample - he's extremely analytical but he doesn't really bring any excitement with his casting. Put him with another analytical and non-exciting caster and you've got a recipe for a very dull-to-listen-to cast. Likewise, if you've got two casters who provide little to no in-depth analysis and basically describe what's happening on screen/shout excitingly at what's going on, it's going to get annoying to listen to very quickly.

I would say that the best shoutcasters are therefore those that can both provide in-depth analysis and channel emotions - in particular excitement - through their casting. This means that they can both shoutcast alone and with someone else, adapting their style based on what the other caster is providing in order to strike the right balance between analysis and emotion between the two of them. Also, a good sense of humor is important to keep things interesting.

Based on this, I'd have to say my favorite casters for QL and SC2 are 2GD and Apollo respectively (Artosis comes a close second).

It's much more about the chemistry between the two casters then the individuals at hand. Best example is CZM and vo0, best casting duo I've heard, the southpark references, the in-depth analysis, all really spot on. On the other hand, CZM with DDK just didn't work out so well.

I have spent a ton of time watching a lot of casting over the last six months, mostly to help improve my skills as a castor. I welcome criticism on my streams anytime because i know it will help me improve and actually provide a better overall enjoyment to the stream.

I have to agree with a few people that have commented above, that a good castor is a well rounded one who can adapt to different co-castors by either analyzing the game at hand or calling the play by play. I also think that a good castor can also keep there thoughts short and concise in order to allow smooth transitions between both individuals. I find a lot of the time that even I make the mistake of talking to much and my fellow castor looses his train of thought because what he wanted to comment on has already gone by in-game.

I do not think there is one amazing castor there is quite a few amazing casting duo's who have manged to just gel together and each personality compliments the other nicely.
