CA servers are full in normal hours (I'd say 3/4 of a day). You can find a premium duel any time day and night.

Pub tdm unfortunately is dead (premium as well as free) but pickups are alive and kicking and there are newcomers. You can also try without premium to decide if tdm pickups are good for you - just ask someone to invite you before adding.

Normal adblockers simply cannot block ads inside the games. However, I'm fairly sure that geographical location was a factor back when QL's IG ads worked with external ad agencies so South America might never have had IG ads. It's not like that anymore, though. You should have ads. Did you even play since yesterday?

Could be that I use a special adblock filter, greasemonkey script or something else, since I remember adding those back in the day.

they got rid of ingame ads earlier this year after numerous people's complaints about freezes when going in and out of game.

ql plugin froze because iga servers didn't respond in time or responded with internal server error pages after some pause. found an old screenshot of that problem, look at the timestamps.

so, instead of fixing these servers or moving iga code in other thread, not the main one, id folks turned it off completely until this yellow eye-poking discount madness and that one time faceit legends promotion.

Ads were gone before that, actually. As you say, it hanged waiting for a server response, but that's because there was no server on the other end that could respond. FaceIt's Legends Cup was pretty much the end of it if I recall correctly and it was on December 16th. As for the new "yellow eye-poking" ones... there's no server behind them like ads in the past. I'll let you figure out how they work :p.

iirc, that screenshot is from time with ads - dishonored etc. it was taken 7 month ago. faceit was after that. ads were turned off 23 January 2013.

Access denied is what I was getting while trying to see your screenshot. I managed to see it, now. They turned down the attempts to communicate with the ads server on this update, yes, but the server was down before that.

EDIT : Which doesn't mean there weren't occasionally problems with the server before, as we can see with your wireshark screenshot and our delay experiences.

It just comes down to which you like playing more. i kind of wish warsow had more players but i can wait till reborn for a proper esport fps. would be nice if ql had that as well, but i dont see many people playing anymore.

This is the most retarded thing I've read today. Fortunately it's only 9.30 here so that can still change. The thing with Quake 3 is that there's no-one fucking playing the game. I'm a premium QL player and there are many populated servers at all times of the day.

No one here expects Quake Live to be the next big (old) thing in eSports, FACEIT or not, but the fact that there's weekly pro cups, daily points cups, 125 FPS league and now TDM cups as well is just god damn great 'cause it provides the entertainment that we all love and even let's anyone play and have some fun with it.

Because that's all it is to us. Fun. We pay and play because it's fun and if you don't want to pay, then don't god damn do it. No one minds.

As long as it's once a year and not micro-transactions. Say that id introduced "buy 10 matches on Blood Run for only €8" (don't... tell... anyone...), then I'd have nothing to do with it, but as it is right now, I'm not complaining.

That doesn't mean that I wouldn't want better and more frequent updates, more community-made maps and so on (andsoforth) and hell, maybe even a free game! :D, but this is definitely not as bad as Gobotz made it out to be :)

QL actually grabbed together communities that were split (all the different mods and incompatible versions) and introduced Quake 3 to lots of new players (myself included).

It also managed to force some decisions that wouldn't be made and accepted in one Q3 mod (like unlagged hit detection, weapon balance, easier movement, spawn system etc.)

QL mainstreamed Quake again and brought thousands of noobs in. That's how it saved Quake.

but all the noobs have left since beta so now we are back to 2008

You have absolutely no idea how many actual noobs play this game all the time and have fun in it.

And from their ranks, every now and then a hero raises to join the army of the low-skilled and get -40 in pickups :)

If you go to QW for example, there's only a handful of noobs who blow themselves up and a bunch of old veterans who can jump around them in circles, there's nothing in the middle.

QL has natural distribution of skill, very little people on top, but then more and more as you go down, with no huge gaps. That's what makes the game healthy.

premium games are pretty dead though, you have to admit that. it was ok last year but this year it has really gone to shit. I think his point is that things are not improving as many seem to think because of faceit. it is still fun to play but less people are playing now than ever.

Anyway, I don't have the numbers for people playing or filled servers, I only know what I see, and I see so many people in all skill levels playing every single day, and I see FACEIT Sunday Cups with a great lineup every time :) That's enough for me.

I'm not paid. Facts are not pro- or anti- things. Facts are facts. And I see more premium activity than I saw at this time last year. You could say that my experience is only anecdotal evidence though and you would be right (why didn't you?). The sad thing is that id is very secretive about their data so we only have anecdotal evidences and their word (they claim there is more premium activity now than there was at the same time last year). That said, even if they provided data we could say they lied so it all boils down to trust anyway. Maybe if more people from more diverse locations provided their experience we could draw a better picture of the state of QL's premium activity. Yet it's not gonna take us far if, every time someone contributes, legions of anonymous posters come and say "Your experience are contrary to our views of the situation so you can't be trusted."

I think it's because Quake used to be something kinda big but that it's not anymore. The community wants it to become something again but it knows that it won't happen. Moreover, people know that, at this point, there's no hope for Quake outside of something done by id (QL). However, QL clearly isn't aimed for the "elitist" bunch of quakers; they want things that aren't priorities for id. Every time something else comes up they are reminded of it and they grow angry because they know QL won't become what they want it to become. I think it's easier to hate for what is not done than to be thankful for what is done.

New maps (or old maps not in QL yet) is a safe bet. New gamemodes aren't out of the question. We got, what, 5 new modes last year? It's surely too late for changes in weapon balance but maybe not for new weapons or weapon options. Kinda like how we got rail-jump, how we might get (probably not) the hook, how we were offered dozens of weapon modification options in Start-A-Match. I wouldn't bet on a ladder though. It's really not something QL seems aimed for. Basically I think we'll just continue to be given new content but nothing really aimed on competition. I'm still waiting on that Freeze Tag premium scoreboard!

As you say, the map rotation worked fine. It was something requested from time to time on QL's forums. It gives a taste of every map, offers diversity and gives an incentive to subscribe (play the maps you liked in the last rotation). I wouldn't have gone with that no map voting on standard (non-pro spawned) servers though. What I'd like to see next is a mode rotation. For the very same reasons. Hopefully it would give those standard CAers some desire to play Domination or Red Rover. Or even more serious modes!
