Well I guess the main difference is that this is an entirely new engine rather than just modifying q3. His goal seems to be to make a good modern engine suitable for esports. Not necessarily a game itself, which PMX aimed to provide.

i commend ttimo for getting something like this started but i don't see it gaining tracktion outside of oss projects where there's already an abundance of interesting projects (based on tech3) that failed to build up big communities.

a year ago i would have said:
eye candy + luck more important than skill + marketing would be all that is needed to push an fps title back into the esports spotlight.

but shootmania is proof that this is not the case.

If shootmania had tech3 engine, engaging gametypes, more than just 2 retarded weapons, and hats, it could be something.

Interesting. Is it possible that it could be more responsive and precise than the quake engines? I know there has been a lot of clever tricks developed that make some sophisticated graphical effects less CPU intensive, but is the same true on the input side of things? It seems like engine responsiveness and precision has been an after-thought as gaming has become more mainstream.

Also, I wonder what being more "modern" will mean in the long run and whether its even worth it. Inevitably, top players will turn off all the eye candy anyway and then the only people who might enjoy the fancy graphics would be non-hardcore spectators (since most hardcore players will bitch and whine about the config they prefer on streams).
