The whole season 1. But I always loved the "Moaning Lisa" episode and the parts where Bart & Homer play the improved version of NES Punch Out.
After Season 1 the quality of Simpsons dropped with each episode and especially Homer, the not-so-smart-but-trying-hard-to-be-a-good-dad, becoming a total retard and the humor got too cheap.

the quality got better in seasons 2-3 and were at their peak in 4-8. season 1 is a classic, but the weakest of the bunch as far as being funny. you either have your goggles on or lost something in translation.

the quality dropped in season 9 when mike scully took over and it got exponentially worse every season after.

It's been a long time since I watched The Simpsons, and I have a hard time remembering the good stuff. I agree with juck that around seasons 1 to 8 were the best.

I do remember two of the worst episodes. Maude Flanders dying and Homer being humped by a panda.

Actually, upon reflection, this would have been my favourite Simpsons clip/short dialogue ever: the flow and the progression is just perfect (along with Burns' facial features after every message), and Burns' "is it about my cube?" punchline just murders it)))

My favourite era of simpsons has to be the Phil Hartman years, the wit and phrasing of the jokes seemed to be at it's cleverest. They used somewhat more cut-a-ways and the speed and the variety of humour just exploded during the fourth season. The animation was more humorous aswell, for example when in Homer the Heretic, Homer explains about his newfound heretisism his eyes aren't fully focused. When I was youngish I seemed to concentrate more on the visual humour, it's fun to go back now and realize the society critical aspects.
