As asyyy wrote, it will get replaced with something else fast because the intrinsic cause is the problem and not the picked activity itself. Obviously nostalgia and wanting to stomp noobs will kick in sometime but not much really as he is not addicted to quake instead is used to following his vicious circle (beliefs, "values"), therefore quake gets replaced with something else in a second and there's no emptiness.

Spending on useless stuff is the obvious route for starters, from then it's up to him to take the "filthy human" route (playing another fps that is 99% the same) or the "decent human" route, which is focusing on work + start a meaningful and long lasting activity that will require effort to nail, the exact opposite of playing the same videogame for decades so probably won't happen (see beliefs. People rarely change, which is not the same as the effects of aging)

how so, there's also warsow, nexuiz and cpma/edawn plus I'm sure QL will stop accepting pro/premium payments at least a year before it dies, so we always got a year of preparation and there's reborn on the way.
not to mention that ID usually share source code after the game dies and I'm pretty sure QL could be run by enthusiasts if they do. (or the same system could be built from scratch like http://etlive.entirely.pro/blog/ for example)

You are right, there is warsow which is userfriendly, though I doubt that everyone will suddenly get keen on its gameplay mechanisms and the cartoonish style. And cpma players will probably still play cpma. With the rest of your post, gl :)
