They lost one qualifier, could not attend the second, and were like 2 min late to the third one.

This is actually very good for the players. No risks, all gain. I wish we could afford that in Quake.

It's still a money waste, as I hardly see any return of investment here. No viewers, probably no continuity for this game. Not sure who is sponsoring this and why, but it's either very motivated people, or someone got screwed up and does not know it yet.

i see alot of glee here at the anticipated flop of shootmania - i hope it succeeds actually, because whilst i dont think SM will stick around for too long, if it does ok, it means that investors can have confidence in skill based arena type games with emphasis on competition etc.

if SM flops, it just signals more clearly the death of these kind of games - which should be bad news for all the skill and fast gameplay evangelists here...

dont even mention reborn - the fact 2gd is still running around doing quake events and doesnt seem to have funding (my point exactly) seems to be a good indication of where it is atm.

Investors (those who aren't themselves developers of their own game) invest in popular games, they don't care whether it's skill based arena or crap based space monkey feeding puzzle.
If SM flops, only means that SM flops, if then some arena shooter becomes popular, no investor would ignore it because some crap game of same genre flopped some time ago.

Ever heard of how hard it is to get an adventure game, a classic RPG or RTS game funded these days? The reason for all these titles by big name developers turning to kickstarter is that they can't successfully pitch the ideas to the publishers.

I'd say if a genre seems to be unpopular that absolutely has influence on other games seeking investment. How would some arena shooter become popular before it is actually developed anyway?

Funding development is one thing (you don't want to risk), sponsoring tournaments is another (you already know that game is popular, so why not sponsor it?). If some shooter becomes extremely popular, sponsors will support it no matter how many previous shooters have failed.
SM success might actually affect companies to reject development of Quake-style shooters and try to make their shooter games more SM-like, which is not a good outcome for Quake.

ye, but based on the recent track record of UT3 failing and QL failing, SM failing would be the final nail in the coffin for the genre. good luck to 2GD getting funding next to that...

UT3 failed because it had crappy MP and netcode. QL, while not being a great success, revived a nearly dead Q3 scene. Shitmania is a dumbed down game.

UT3 failed because it did not sell enough, simple as that, no rationalization is going to change that. gamers simply werent interested, aside from the pretty gfx.

'dumbed down' implies that they copied something, but they didnt - SM is an original (as in new gameplay, gametype and map concepts) game, so it cannot be 'dumbed down' - simple perhaps, but not 'dumbed down'.

"skill and fast gameplay" doesn't apply to sm, your argument is invalid.

QL isnt exactly 'fast paced' gameplay either, unless you consider COD TDM to be fast paced gameplay aswell?

I don't understand what they are trying to accomplish.
Seeing how at every tournament they keep even the last places with some serious prizes and all travel costs are always covered, it means even Nadeo/sponsors realize that no one wants to play this for free, just for enjoyment of competition. This model leads nowhere, unless you have infinite money to randomly throw at players.

Hey everyone my name is Alex Mendez (also known as GoldenboyFTW) and I'm one of the commentators/content producers for ShootMania here at IPL and I wanted to address the prize situation that was presented in another post. We took a portion of the 100K and applied it to the flights and hotels for all of the players who qualified for IPL5. So in many ways it's a Prize within itself since the players/teams didn't have to put any money forward since they won the qualifier. Hopefully this helps clear up the confusion.

Hey Alex Mendez! Thank you for clarifying the situation!

We understand that all of this is a work in progress and we are continuing to work on growing SM but hopefully bring more eyes to eSports FPS titles (Quake included). It may not be directly but if more FPS titles can succeed then that's good for all of us. I'll be posting on here more and if you have any questions that I can answer (I can't answer EVERYTHING of course) I will do my best to do so.

It is still a bit misleading.

This situation is great for those that don't have extensive sponsorship as it likely offsets some of the individual costs, but it really does look like the organization is reaching when they announce a $100k prize pool, when it is realistically 80k with travel expenses covered.

And just as an additional disclaimer, I don't hate SM or the organization putting up the money for it. Any money in the Fantasy FPS genre is great for the future development of it. I just get irked at these kind of marketing tactics which seem to take advantage of players and an audience when announcing a 80k prize pool for a game still in Beta would still be fairly impressive.

Keep in mind I don't know you from Adam. While I'm certain you're being sincere in your comments concerning IPL, the one thing that I would personally like to see is a bit more clarity on the first go. $20000 is a big chunk of money to be adding to the prize pool, and most sponsors could cover the costs with ease considering a majority of competitors are North American. Just for my own interest, I priced a return flight at $284 leaving from Buffalo, NY. Splitting a hotel would maybe add a few hundred and let's say set me around $500 for the duration of the event not including meals.

Personally, I'd rather pay the $500 out of pocket to increase the prize pool, as I'd get the return anyway since all 8 teams will earn something. I'm sure the lower end would get their return based on a structure of:

1st Place: $35,000
2nd Place: $18,000
3rd/4th Place: $10,500
5th/6th Place: $7,500
7th/8th Place: $5,500

Anyway, I want to reiterate that I think the fact IPL is hosting an event at all is great. I just think it shouldn't have been announced as a $100,000 tournament when it really isn't.

Yeah and I don't blame you for not taking my word. I had the chance to ask around and was told that Ubisoft wanted this event to help grow the North American scene. Due to the fact that when everything was made and plans were being put in place for IPL5 it was suggested by guys like Rapha that we put some of that money aside for players since no major players (coL, Fnatic, EG, etc) were supporting SM at the time. Obviously, the scene is substantially different now but the players would have preferred to have an all expense paid trip to Vegas (Flight/Hotel). Believe it or not the price of the flights are pretty expensive. I was surprised as well but that's how it is. We have players coming from all over the world so it gets a little pricey. I hope this clears it up further and I really hope you enjoy the event if you plan on checking it out. (I'll be casting ;P)

Just to clarify this, yes I did happen to make that suggestion when at PAX. But also something key that is being left out that I also stated was that with something like this there needs to be a system in place so that teams that actually do have sponsors don't have to deal with this. That this system is in place for those who are finally starting to get a chance to prove themselves. That way it doesn't deter teams from trying to qualify and get really good if they don't have a sponsor.

It's simple business, the whole sponsor/player relationship. The whole reason players get sponsored is because it's good for them to have someone who is really good at said games who can help promote them as a brand as well as whoever is backing them up(steelseries,MSI,Toshiba,whoever). And in turn the player gets trips paid for, salaries and the like because they're good enough to be in that situation.

Now when a tournament is paying for trips for the sponsored players it's doing a few things.

A. It's taking away potential prize $ that they could earn,(yes I've read above the argument about prize cuts from teams but hey that varies from sponsor to sponsor) which with the fact that they already have a sponsor who supports them with travel etc. They shouldn't have prize $ potentially docked from them.
B. Also when this happens what's really the point for the players to actually represent their sponsors when they are getting nothing in return from them. Lets be honest, most of the teams right now probably aren't paying any salaries whatsoever, so the whole deal with them paying for your flight, hotel, possibly some food is now taken out of the equation entirely. This only helps the sponsor not both the sponsor and the player.
C. Yea sure from the perspective of the sponsor it's really nice to have a tournament like this. Gives them a break from spending $ on their players but I look at it as hey, every team knows that they have a budget and what they plan for is for this kind of stuff. To send their players to tournaments to get exposure from players playing, marketing products, doing interviews, drawing in fans to hopefully see and end up liking the products that the players are 'backing up'.

Now when it comes to the non sponsored players, like I said I do feel that there needs to be some $ set aside for them. Everyone before they're sponsored has to earn their dues. A system where for players without a sponsor, if they try hard enough and perform well enough to qualify for such an event. They shouldn't be left behind because they can't afford to go to the event. They earned their right to be at the tournament based on their performance in qualifications etc. So for this there needs to be a prize purse large enough that even for the last place. So that even when the flight/hotel is deducted from the prize that the player/s would earn, they would still be on a trip worth taking, that their time wouldn't have been invested in vain.

I'm not saying all of this to bash that players are being sent to an event by the tournament organizers. I think it's a great thing and something that needs to happen more often. It just needs to be handled in a much better and smarter way.

What andysak wants to say is most players are sponsored by their clans and other companies anyway, so flying them in is a waste of prize money. Non sponsored players (the minority) will have a higher incentive to pay the flight by themselves as prize money is higher, and will try their best to get sponsored after qualifying anyway.

Also more prize given to the 1st place always sounds better than less. I know it's ideal to gave everyone something but that lowers 1st.
And personally I think qualifiers shouldn't give you money but just qualifying to the main event. That way there's more prize money for the event itself, and the "qualifier prize money" is the 7th/8th prize as an incentive to actually attend.

With all that said, I'd give $3k to 7th/8th (and so on) in order to increase prize money for 1st. Of course that depends on the tournament system, because if it is just groups and single elim. then just give the same to 5/6/7/8.

I don't disagree but like I said before this event was made to help strengthen the NA SM scene. At the time of it's creation there were no major teams supporting it and if you host a qualifier and a team wins but decide they could not make it because of costs then you're screwed.

^^ this, and like half of those teams arn't sponsored anyway. Spin move, planet express, asphyxia & thirdcoast are not backed by organisations afaik. Epsilon only recently took on former ESP for IPL5 so yeh... i see no problem with it.

While I wish I could see some sort of reasoning to defend the whole taking money out to pay for travel expenses, I just can't figure out how to do it. I think megaman3 here made some good points. For a boutique tournament like this (only 8 teams, big names) you'd have to expect that the majority if not all of those teams will have major funding behind them from their teams, whether or not they don't openly recognize SM as a division within their organization.

It's an interesting move by IPL and probably could of worded things different but all in all it's really not a big deal, still a lot of money.

I think a lot of people are missing the big picture. The game is still in beta, a tournament with any sort of major cash prize pool for an FPS that is still in beta is a first to my knowledge, right?

If you look back, major team tournaments (counter-strike events, ANY quakecon team tournament) with the possible exception of MAYBE a couple, the first place prize was always WAY less than $10k a player- which is what this event is.

Now consider that these players and organizations are also getting sent to this event for free, so that money is all a +net gain. One thing I don't think people understand is that while these teams and organizations were probably perfectly capable of sending these players themselves, any money they win a cut typically goes to their organization as part of whatever contracts they have worked out. There is a greater chance that players will not have to do that for this event because the organizations cost is $0 to send them to this event, which goes back to the +net gain of the whatever a teams winnings are.
