new devices / materials are being studied and that may be a big breakpoint with the past.

talking ass, most motherboards use LED malfunction signals instead of speaker beeps, MSI started using LEDs first with 4 on the backplate, asus just use LED beside the componment on the board..

lighting a LED with a controled current is cheaper then sending a tone through the front panel and speaker

msi and asus use LED`s to signal boot failures and trouble shooting guides

MSI light up their 4 LED`s to let to know whats wrong, cpu/memory/bios/etc

asus have a LED next to the componment which will be red if it fails on boot

gigbyte still use post beeps for boot failures

asrock have 10 more years before they join the top dogs and use LED`s

PPS in led TVs and monitors you need both LEDs and a transistor for each pixel.
PPPS maybe you mean high luminosity leds don't need a lot of power for emitting a bright light and not the other way around.

putting a modern day LED on your PCB board is not expensive or complex like some wikipedia info you posted, its as simple as putting a transistor on your board

most motherboards will boot from a USB stick or drive so they already have some form of emulator,

most people like quite PC`s in todays world, and dont care much for a 60w speaker that beeps a random malfunction code you usually have to turn on/off you PC 10 times before you know the full code so you can look in the trouble shooting part of the manual

adding a basic cpu to flash the bios and setup the bios without needing a cpu installed in the socket will be just part of the future and could just use a cellphone cpu onboard for 3 cents each

using LED`s instead of beep codes are probaly patented for each manufactuer, gigabute should add a 3inch x 1 cm LED screen and just print the message if there is power to the board

motherboards probaly only need a real basic 30mhz chip that allows you to flash the bios and edit the bios setup without having to install a cpu in its socket

say 45MHz so we have some margin for next generation.
