Liking the map choices very much
edit: with the exception of ctf. I know there must be a balance between maps aimed at noobs (i.e. hitsu) and good maps, but now it is 3/2 and there's one map no one in the world likes (doubleimpact). Should be 3/3.

nah. If it wasn't for it with the new rotation thing then non subscribers would be getting more than they used to for free, and idea was forcing people to buy a sub.

I think it can be perfected, with 4 map choices (which actually uses less horizontal space on the end-game screen), less maps in each gametype but handpicked (no blackcathedral and dredwerkz as a choice in duel) and less voting time.

For example lets say you play hektik, then at the end of the match you have 4 choices and the pool consists of almostlost (quakecon2008), dm13, dismemberment, provinggrounds (t2), eyetoeye and hektik. 4 out of 6 isn't bad at all considering that right now your chances of playing a decent map are 3 out of 15 (or 3 out of 10 if the system removes huge maps).
Furthermore it would be faster with lets say 5 seconds less of voting time, particularly in duel, even better if the moment both players press F3 the match starts without delays because the map just loaded.

Same in team mods. Now huge maps aren't shown in public standard servers if it is lets say 2v2 (implemented like a month or so after the july patch that introduced this system), but that measure isn't the same as only choosing maps that are actually played on that mod or that can potentially be played there. For example right now eyetoeye and electrichead can be played in ...tdm lol, wasted slots. That happened in FFA 2 months ago with ca3: 16 players servers just went empty because of that.

Finally, some maps simply shouldn't be in rotations because they will always make people leave standard public non-spawned servers (where end-game voting matters and where most games are played by far), no matter the mod or how good or bad they are. This month those are blackcathedral and doubleimpact, so those 2 slots could be replaced with decent maps instead, particularly in ctf's case.

Actually the project is "healthy" only because of that change, as some id employee said at quakecon (stream. Think it was carmack or marty) and at their forums.

I prefer having to buy a subscription instead of id shutting down the game completely, which means quake dies once and for all. And since all other fast paced fps games are dead or on the verge of it (unless you are delusional) then there's nowhere to go besides the latest cod.

Moreover people now play on premium servers and spawn standard and premium servers using pro accounts, so the game is miles better quality wise. Yesterday I even played tdm on premium servers rofl, which was unthinkable 3 months ago.

It doesn't change the fact that ztn is a good map to learn duel on. That's not only my opinion, but also 2gd's.

So, to prove the "fact", u bring opinions out, oki.

If someone's trying to learn duel, he/she isn't likely to know how to handle the stress and frustration that only something like quake duel can provide. I'd advise someone to start playing duel on maps that are generally fast paced, or something new, so that you're likely to get a couple of frags even if you're losin by 20.

Old maps are generally a bad idea to play at to get started, cause everyone will just make fun of you in the most aggressive way possible, and eventually you'll get so frustrated that you'll end up disliking duel (why the hell you think there are many ppl saying "rofl duel is boring, +back shit, etc").

Obviously, ztn isn't the only old map that's played nowadays (dm13, aero, even tox is somewhat old innit?), but it's for sure the one easiest to frustrate ppl on, if you know the map vs someone that doesn't know it too well, you just +back for 10 mins and the other guy will be mad for a whole fucking week.

personal opinion

i did hate to learn/play fast maps, cause ppl with just minimum experiance on such map will always win against "i play tox for the first time in my life" guys... not being able to move out of spawn without taking dmg is frustrating...

now, on ztn you can play and even after lose you can still be satisfied, cause you did well in defence etc etc

If you put strenx vs a noob, it doesn't matter which map they play. If you match two equally skilled players against each other, they're more likely to learn the right approach to duel by playing ztn than, say, aero, where, after being fragged, you can just grab RG and rush to shoot some more.

As far as frustrating the opponent goes, you must be smoking something dangerous. Try avoiding spawnrape against a more experienced player on aero, tox or hektik, if you're relatively new to duel.

Nope. Premium servers play it often. Far too often. It's like the "premium rotation" is only dm6/overkill. I usually never play on standard servers but I might do an exception this month to avoid those maps.

premium servers reflect what people want to play.
so if it's not broken, don't fix it. if people is playing the same map for over 10 years don't ask yourself why: whatever the reason might be, let them keep playing it.

Player success is great, but without financial success it's bound to fail sooner or later.

people don't play ztn/pro6/aero/overkill/p9 for some obscure reason (or to annoy you if that's what this is about), they do so because those are good maps while many others plain suck.

exp is right, removing those maps for non-paying players did finally kill public tdm and will sooner or later take the other mods to the grave aswell. i have literally no idea what kind of "business model" id is following, it's far beyond stupid anyway. you don't get people's money by first forcing them to do something they don't want to do.

If you want a tangible reason why Quake's numbers are dwindling, it's because of the difficulty pitching a ten year old engine to a new audience of competitive gamers. Don't get me wrong, it is THE superior competitive fps... but it's polish and appeal have waned somewhat in comparison with modern titles. I grew up with the Quake games and I remember playing Q3 in 99... so I don't have the same issues...
Id should probably focus on making another arena based Quake game and promoting it properly. That's what we need.

I've got my filter set to clanarena, its about 1 prem server vs 20 regulars. But now that the map pool is shit nobody is playing =D

Np, but I always thought tdm is superior to any other modes, if played for fun OR competitive.. nothing better than joining a pub prem tdm server and get a fluid tdm gameplay eventhough you only play with those guys every now and then..
