I agree. The biggest thing is strafe jumping, bunny hopping, etc and Carmack is on record stating he never cared for that stuff. A lot of people never learn that to a good degree and thus never get that into the game. If you can't do a major skill it's a huge turn off to keep playing. Over the years I've helped probably 50 people learn to bunny hop in QW. About 2/3s of guys from NQ just gave up on it because even with days/weeks of practice they never mastered it.

Past id titles such as the original Doom series is much easier to pick up and play due to ease of movement. All id has to do to substantially lower the skill gap is remove advanced movement and up the default player speeds by a significant margin and viola the game is much easier but still keeps the crazy speed and action. Before I had played Doom extensively I would call that change crazy but it's not that bad especially if it would mean a much larger player base online.

why not doing some kind of ladder with increasing game difficulty:

wood league: Item timers on + simplidfied movement

mid league: Only mega timer + a little more hardcore movement

pro league: hardcore quake.

people would be educated on the process and sucked into the beauty of the game.

Go play Doom 2 CTF and get back to me on that. Strafe jumping and bunnying is crazy fun, I'll be the first to admit, but it's not a critical element. Even in early era Q1/Q2 it was barely used.

That doesn't change the fact that I enjoy advanced movement a hundred times more. It IS a critical element and if a choice has to be made between Quake vs. other FPS, I obviously choose Quake anytime.

Obviously you are at the extreme end of the spectrum. I'm a QWer primarily as my choice of Quake. I've completed crazy trick maps like ztricks, ztricks2, way2ez, way2ez2, etc so I've been there done that. I love advanced movement and would hate to see it go away but in the grand scheme of things it's not important. I do understand for you it is a critical element but for the general population they'd be happy to see it go. Look at the most popular FPS games on Steam, all of them feature relatively simple movement. If one of the changes required to make Quake popular again was to nuke advanced movement I'd be all for it. I'm tired of having a dead Quake community. Larger community >>>> advanced movement.

That crispy fluidness which come from the advanced movement is the cornerstone of "quakeish" gameplay.

And all of them are quite crap. First time on public and ownage? Ridiculous.
The last "somewhat good" online FPS was CoD 4 (Promod), but the reason it was / is "somewhat good" is because of strafe, wall-hugging and other movement techniques - but even if they're present in a simple way, the game is still slow as hell and way-way mooore easier than any Quake, and just watching it on stream is not fun, unlike the titles which start with a "Q", where only plain observing is quite entertaining too.

I'd be stopping being a quaker after 15 years. Well, the correct term is; I'd play REAL Quake and leave the dumbed down shame to the ignorant masses.

I think you are wildly over reacting due to your emotional investment in Quake movement. Also I did suggest upping player movement speeds, so instead of the default being 320 maybe it'd be 600. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. Currently in NA there is no real scene anymore and hasn't been for years. I'd rather play a "dumbed down" version of Quake than none at all. Multiplayer requires players to be a game. I assume you are in EU (from your ESR profile) so perhaps it is hard to relate as none of the EU scenes are anywhere as dead as they are over here. I had tons of fun in Q1/Q2 without jumping around like a mad man. I'm apparently just part of the ignorant masses however so you should probably stop replying. :-)

vanilla q3 (not osp, just q3 1.00) isn't very suitable for competition. It's more FFAish.

q2 is awesome out of the box, you can really tell multiplayer was made using input from players, but has gay netcode (in built delay) and silly issues that not even mods and clients solve.

A Q1 official "mod", so it's an "upgraded" Q1.

vq3: Elaborate that a bit more. Ofc. 1.32 and OSP was the real core of competitive Q3, but even before those, it was still highly competitive.

qw as released by carmack and maintained by zoid is just netquake with a less horrible better netcode, mouse input and slightly different movement. It wasn't meant to be the competitive thing it became and most of the things that make modern qw what it is are relatively recent serverside mods ( slightly modified spawn system, 110dmg direct rockets and not random [100-120], antilag, yadda yadda )

That doesn't change the fact that it's highy competitive. And as you said, NETquake, so the main reason it was developed is online play.

netquake is just the name given by the us community to the original q1 client, there's nothing more to it than this. They somehow stuck with it for a while even though it's utter shit compared to qw.

The netcode of qw might have been state of the art back then, the game behind it was not developed for any kind of competitive scene and that's actually what makes its flavor. q2 then q3 were developped with that in mind.

The sad part is there is still a NQ scene out there. It's larger in NA than EU but it still exists. And no, they don't want to play QW! True NQers hate QW more than true Q1ers hate Q2.

... id should focus on getting quake5 to an e-sport status, that quake deserves. They have all of the pices infront of them... servers network, QL xp: do's and don'ts, i just hope they will contect the dots correctly and poor resources in, ... instead of seperating ppl into multiple projects.

And maybe have mutliple deadlines and not when its done... cuz that didnt help rage. :P
