It's good to see Quake players starting their own streams. It's honestly not that hard to set up, and it exposes the game more to the general public than just a few major tournaments a year. Hopefully more players or pros start streaming too.

I haven't seen much of zoot besides the arena and quakecon and bits and bobs here and there, but I find him a good filler for talking. And the filler content isn't that bad either its usually quick and the information usually pertains to the game which is good for filling dead air, just my opinion/observation though :)

About about prediction part im not sure if your referring to this in general terms or the recent "The arena by 2GD studio"(not sure how to reference that lol) where the games/results were pretty wonky in some respects. Im not sure how to think of this but It kinda bugs me how QL people just assume who's going to win and dislike upset's. Its like everyone is frozen in time and skill and emotions are stagnant, I think statistics is partly to blame there :(

by predicting i mean his nasty habit of assessing comeback probabilities when a guy is down (no matter how many frags). every damn map i've seen him cast, he always starts to talk about comebacks in the last minutes.

I personally like hypothetical comeback situations, ok this game is over lets talk about "the impossible" or maybe what the next game could be like opposed to talk crap(which ironically I also find entertaining at times but its a matter of taste and what makes the most sense ideally).

Quite surprised to see you run such initiative while having left for shootmania, but whatever.

If you want to run tournaments, I would recommend maybe to associate with other structures, and help them.
We don't need too many small different tournaments, just a few well ran and perennial ones.

If you still want to run your tournament anyways, make it more official and create a kickstarter or chip-in page to set the fundraising correctly. Because I doubt people will make the effort to e-mail you etc etc, plus it looks a bit amateur and greedy (even if it's not the case, that's the way it will feel for most of the community)

That's nice but it won't work.
First of all, excuse me if it's a bit blunt, but you're not liked enough. You don't have a huge fanbase like cooller, cypher or even rapha, and it's sadly quite the opposite judging by what a lot of people are posting on this site.
The second point is that you can't quit Quake almost cold turkey, start playing and fully supporting another game that once again the community always hated, and then just came back without any explanation to Quake saying "Finally I want to support Quake so send me your money".
Last but not least, it's not the players' job to organize tournaments, simple as that. I'm not even sure that people would be donating money if DreamHack or 2GD or some zotac admins were asking for it, and these are people with a lot of experience in organizing tournaments. So what make you think that people will trust you with their money ?

I'm sure your intentions are good, but what you're doing doesn't seem quite the best thing to do, you should rather focus on streaming and lessons, providing actual content for the players whether they are beginners or oldschool players.

Good luck with your project, I think it's really nice that you invest some time to do some actual streaming which is something that always lacked in the Quake scene.

As for id software, it was already discussed a lot and I don't want to sound like raythenoob. Basically, look at how many huge QL LANs there were in 2009-10 and compare it to current situation, or look at what some enthusiasts made in their spare time (e.g. qlranks, wolfcam) compared to what id has made in 3 years with several people working full time (e.g. added some cvars, UI tweaks, and put some of those enthusiast-made maps on servers).

Except some locations in the US, most of the servers are not run by id. Usually it's some fans who pay for server hosting or sometimes a hosting company has some admin that's a fan of quake and so he provides a server for id. So does id spend your money on servers? Not really.
"Some new content" is again mostly fan-made and given to id for free, so they don't spend your money on content either.

If im not mistaken they made several new modes. Domination, red rover, a&d, 1ctf and some new maps. I know some of the content they provide is old stuff just added for QL, but its still "new" content.

Those are team arena and ra3 gametypes. Also 80% of brand new maps are awful.

- One prefers other quakes above quake live

Seems like there will be a replacement for the zotac cup very soon. I don't say that your concept of community-donated tournaments is a bad idea but imo it fits more at community-driven games like xonotic, cpm or warsow. QL is commercial in most ways and I don't think people are willed to donate money to a commercial project. That doesn't mean that they want quake to die though.

Sounds like one of the many job advertisements. They're always searching for someone with experience, but how can you get any experience if no one let's you have a go at it. Maybe I should have been more specific, but my post was really within the context of ESR because he is posting on ESR which is probably the only quake community website and where are probably all the hardcore players (the ones most likely to be interested in watching tournaments). So I wasn't putting him down, I was just stating that people on ESR were probably more likely to donate money to Cooler than to him, but once again I'm not even sure people on this site would be donating money to anyone anyway.

Organizing tournaments (or anything else) is job for anyone who understands how to do it and willing to do it good. Everything is OK, but it's annoying to see you always complaining about something even in pub CA. Just relax and play a game without rages/whining etc. You complain that your team is bad - it is definitely bad cause your skillrating is much more than other's. Quake has team autobalance so you just need to do your best.

Also about the way you treat other players. One's can be a noob in comparison with you, but that's not the reason to laugh at him, at least when you're streaming. As much as I like the enthusiasm you have for attempting to make something like this happen, I have to say you may not have the reputation to actually pull it off.

Part of me says people will donate, whether it is a single euro or not. However another part of me screams that it won't be enough to get it off the ground. What will happen to the people that already donate and nothing comes of it? Do you just pocket it? Who will be held accountable if these donations aren't used in the way people have understood your intentions as?

No offense to you, but unfortunately your demeanor in tournaments and games I have seen you play doesn't make me want to give you money, especially when I have no idea where and when the money I contribute would be used.

If you're thinking of donation schemes or trying to get people more involved, why not take that 100€ you've said you're contributing and use it towards premium or pro accounts to give out? You can do the training whenever you want, for free. I guess part of my other problem is that there isn't an easy way to 'audit' these funds to know how much you actually contribute to tournaments and how much you pocket as a 'fee' for your training.

Good luck either way, but there are definitely questions people should be asking.

I'm not trying to attack you, these are the questions people will ask and you'll need to come up with a solution that satisfies the majority if you really want this to take off. You'll need to be accountable if things don't work out and the donated money doesn't actually get used for what you say it is going to be used for.

Again, it's great you're saying you want to help bolster the community right away. I think asking for money right away is asking a bit much, as you haven't contributed anything to the community apart from your great gameplay. Not to mention the most memorable thing you have done in recent memory is move on to shootmania.

To put things in perspective, if Memento_Mori was asking the community for donations to organize tournaments, I feel he'd have greater success because he is a known, trusted contributor of the community. People can trust he will likely use the money for what he says he will as hhas shown his dedication to this game on a whole new level compared to most people.

I did a lot of video when I give a lot of lessons on dm13 and t7, and I didn't help community :). At least I reply to everybody, not like other players who just ignore people.

Communication was not good, and they had really high ping, so it was impossible to train in those conditions.

I didn't kick them, we proposed them to play in shootmania inter Millenium.

Memento did and not many donated. We organized the first Rising Stars Cup from the money.

Well without a "concrete plan to how exactly use the money yet" as he put it there, I - and I'm sure many others - have no real incentive to donate... It comes back to the same argument with strenx concerning where the money is going. I contributed 60 euros to support the CPM scene in order for them to keep up game/mumble servers but only because I knew that is how the money would be used. If they just asked for money, I likely wouldn't have given them any.

As well, Memento more or less said in the first few paragraphs in the page that there are other means to "donate" to the cause, for example buying premium or pro or taking part in discussions and contributions on various Quake-oriented sites.

I feel if Memento did actually have a solid plan and proper marketing of the project that a considerable amount of people would donate. Considerable being a relative term here given the state of the QL community currently. It would have to be accepted that the amount wouldn't reach more than a few hundred dollars, and I think even that is pushing it.

As well, it may not be a bad idea for someone of Memento's dedication to team up with players like strenx and other community figures in order for them to both reach their goal of ensuring Quake always has it's place in the spotlight.

It just seems like the "for the community" thing is being used as pure feel good marketing. I don't have any problem with you making money and using some of it to run events. Or are you looking to make money for yourself via Twitch and use donations to run events?

I appreciate what strenx is trying to do. Sometimes his random fake raging is a bit annoying but he does talk to the people watching him which is great and it is great to see him playing QuakeLive again, in any capacity.

In regards to donations, I think if you show me that you can do something with your OWN money first, then I have no problem donating.

Isn't there different meaning's for rage and that's why it gets miss interrupted often? Most people assume nerd rage(uncontrolled, incoherent screaming, monkeys, hate, illogical) im guessing. For me at least "rage" is usually just frustration and it's usually better to release that frustration opposed to bottling it up. Just like in sports, people can be pretty vocal about frustration and with competitive games I see no difference(As long as there's no deep seeded hate or personal insults flying around). For me im pretty passive person but my breaking point is usually things I can't control like lagg or situations where both you and your opponent are low and it comes down to the wire so i'll say "come on",laugh or make some sort of strange noise by exhaling depending how focused I am. I suppose either way there's entertainment value too it im just saying it shouldn't be considered an insult, it should be just considered being human and entertaining and just be shrugged off if you do get called a rager(unless you have rage issues, then maybe you should find something else to do).

I think a lot of people here are being pretty disrespectful to strenx. Regardless of whether he's 'childish' or whatever, the guy is putting in some real effort to help the community, and who are we to say he can't make it happen? The only goal we know Strenx set himself in the past was to become a top Quake player, and he improved like crazy from 2009-2011 in order to achieve that. So let's just see what he can do here...

Nah, his aim was always exceptional, it's why everyone kept talking about how much potential he had. I think he smartened up a lot in terms of timing, positioning, and controlling his emotions ingame.

Without his aim, he would barely be top 8 or 10; every time he lose, he lose outsmarted by the opponent; only Cypha the snypha and Rapha sometimes have been able to outaim him.

Sure, but the fact still remains that he had pretty much the same aim in 2009 as he had in 2011. But he progressed from an inconsistent dueller who almost always lost to all the top players to a consistent dueller who could compete with them. If his aim didn't improve, other things must have. I'm not saying he's a smarter player than a lot of the top guys, but I'm saying improved the non-aim based aspects of his duelling game a lot between 2009 and 2011, and that's why results improved. I remember his old style on most maps was based off his old tactics on DM6 - rush rush rush until you get control, and then rush rush rush to get all the frags back that you lost when you rushed to get control in the first play. He doesn't play as simply and riskily as that any more.

If Strenx wants attention there are a lot of better, easier ways he could get it. If he wants money this would be a really moronic way to go about it - why put in so much effort just to have the possibility of winning a tournament which other top players will compete in? If he cared that much about cash he would have competed in the final few zotacs, and possibly gone to Quakecon (with training it's extremely likely he would have placed top 3, although costs of flying, accomodation may admittedly outweigh prize money.)

Compare how much Strenx played in the year before he went inactive compared to Cooller, Av3k, many other top pros - many top players dropped activity with the money after IEM kicked Quake. Strenx kept playing because he genuinely loves Quake, the same reason why he's doing pushing this stream/tourney idea at the moment. So how about cutting him some slack and being a bit less cynical/conspiracy theorist about it. Strenx is a big name in the Quake scene, he's got more of a chance of making this happening than if a nobody like you or I tried.

huge chunk of this esr 'whine' is well justified. you can't blame community for being sceptical about strenx's commitment to this initiative. BUT if you look really close (or closer then apparently none whatsoever) you'll see posts indicating interest, hope and support even if criticizing some of the decisions strenx has made. and critique is not whining.

I'm beginning to realize the problem with quake isn't exposure or lack of support from id it is simply the worst community ever to exist. A bunch of curmudgeons who are too cheap to buy pro/premium, criticize people like strenx and fatal1ty when they attempt to do things for the community, and then wonder why they just leave it.

strenx threw shit at quake before leaving to play SM, and before that he was the most disliked top player of all time anyway. Now comes back with his tail between his legs and insults everyone who doesn't agree with him asking money from us.

As for fat, in the 2gd interview thread there's the 999th discussion about his tournaments wins being fake. Plus fat donates $100 to quake and $20,000 to LoL, which is doing the same as strenx does with his sooo generous activities (cheap self promotion)

Fatal1ty has donated more than 100 dollars but lets go off that figure 100 dollars is more than Cooller has given back and Cooller is worshipped around here. Fatal1ty has made a living gaming this does not mean Fatal1ty is rich and has money to throw around like 2gd. Fatal1ty almost has more time played in QL than Cooller and was never active in the QL tournament scene, like Cooller, talk about being in it just for the money, Cooller inactive between every tournament. I have no problems with Cooller but why does he get a pass when no one else does.

I do agree and I don't blame him. I am still very happy to see some public figures are trying to lift QL up. It's my all-time favourite game and I would be very sad if every major even stopped including it. IEM is already one example, right?
